Tajikistan's Massive New Library Risks Becoming White Elephant
The Tajik capital, Dushanbe, already claims to host the tallest flagpole in the world; now it's also home to what officials say is the largest library in Central Asia. The $40-million library is still a work in progress, relying on Tajik citizens to donate books. Meanwhile, some critics say it's less an institution of learning than a vanity project for the Tajik president. Video by Akram Qahhorov, RFE/RL's Tajik Service

Dushanbe, Center - Tajikistan 4K Travel Channel
On our arrival in Dushanbe, it is about 35ºC. Since we have only got a little sleep for the last two days, we are first going to have a rest. In the late afternoon, we set off to explore the city. We drive to the city center. To our surprise, it has a very modern and pompous design.
The Rudaki Park is the starting point of our exploration tour. The Rudaki Monument cannot be overlooked. It was erected in honor of Abu Abdullah Djafar of Rudak. He lived from 858 to 940 and one called him the father new Persian poetry. Even Goethe's collection of lyrical poems, the West-Eastern Divan was inspired by him.
The magnificent building of the National Library is diagonally opposite.
In front of the National Library, a parade avenue parallels from east to west. At the eastern end stands the Ismoili Somoni statue, crowned by a golden arch. Ismoili Somoni (Abu Ibrahim Ismaili ibn Ahmad) was the Samanid Emir of Transoxiana and Khorasan. He lived on 849 to 907.
After the death of its brother he took over the power in Buchara and made it one of the most glorious cities of Islam. He cultivated the Sunni theology and built many mosques and madrasas. Ismoili Somoni was regarded as a just and benevolent ruler for the poor. After the disintegration of Soviet rule, one rediscovered his legacy.
At the western end of the avenue is the Independence Monument, the Stele with the Emblem of Tajikistan. Looking from here to the north, you see the Presidential Palace. If you approach the palace with a camera, the security personnel gets annoyed.
In the background stands the flag of Tajikistan. It weighs 300 kg and blows on the second tallest free-standing flagpole in the world with 165 m; The highest with 170 m was inaugurated in 2014 in Jeddah.
From the Independence Monument, we continue our walk to the west and reach a rocky crag that leads to the banks of Varzob River. An artificial waterfall provides cooling. In the evening, families like to stay in this area.

Abends verweilen Familien gerne in diesem Bereich.

Dushanbe, City Walk - Tajikistan 4K Travel Channel
After we visited the bazaar, we still have time to do a city walk in Dushanbe. We go through the Khurarvi Dekhlavi and Valomatzoda Street to reach Rudaki Avenue. It is the boulevard of Dushanbe and leads to the center of Rudaki Park, which we have already visited.
Large densely growing trees provide a pleasant shade in Rudaki Avenue. Automatic sprinkler systems ensure that the green gets enough water.
We pass the National State University, which is adorned with a picture of the current President Emomalij Rahmon. He has been in office since 1994 and elected for a fourth term of office, in 2013. In all Central Asian republics, one pursues a certain personality cult, to preserve a lifelong presidency.
Afterwards, we arrive at the Opera House of Dushanbe, which is a popular meeting place in the city. Looking for a cool drink we visit the New Maza Café. Surprised we notice that every table has a charging possibility for mobile phones.
One reason might be that the academy of science is on the other side of the road. A monument of Bobodzhon Gafurov, a Soviet historian who has written a story of Tajikistan, is in the center of the semicircular building.
The yellow building with the white arched windows is the former National Library. The new one is at Rudaki Park. The next outstanding buildings are the two towers of the Dushanbe Plaza. With their columnar structures at the top, they remind us of the Palace of Knossos the Minoans on Crete.
Large residential blocks dominate the next section. To our astonishment, there is a British Pub.
We reach the Rudaki Park again, but this time we do not stay long. On the right hand is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Later, we discovered a new building at the corner of Shohtemur Street. There is the seat of the government, the tax authority, and the foreign ministry.
