I have always had a great interest in nature and photography. During the higher education in Art and Design foundation course I tried my hand at photography and the darkroom process. That then lead me on to my interest in photography; subsequently this lead to me enrolling onto HND Photography course so I could gain more knowledge and skills. To increase my skills and chances of further employment I enrolled on a BA Honours Creative Imaging. My other interests also include taking videos and documenting various public events via videos whilst away and at home.

FILM 2 Our Seas The Science of Sustainability
Part 2 of 4. As human population grows and demand for seafood rises, it is vital that fisheries are properly managed enabling them to provide sustainable food sources without depleting fish stocks or harming marine ecosystems. A successful fishery aims to catch the largest number of fish that still allows fish stocks to rapidly rejuvenate. This film explores factors considered by management and scientists when setting fishing legislation and why a thorough understanding of fish biology is vital to ensure that fish populations remain stable over time.

LOBSTER NURSERY
A Lobster Nursery has been established on the Island of Houat (off Brittany) to restock the sea. The lobsters appear to have deserted this area, thus threatening the livelihood of local fishermen.

Padstow September 2018 - We took a visit
During our stay in Cornwall (2018) we took a visit to lovely Padstow.
A walk around the town, stopped by a local church a bite to eat at the Harbour, and a bit of a walk just out of time.
We also visited the National Lobster Hatchery.
Padstow Harbour Hotel
This 4-star, recently renovated Victorian boutique hotel perches above the small fishing port of Padstow – a harbour town famous for seafood, and that must rank as one of Cornwall’s most charismatic and atmospheric destinations. Recently renovated with stunning contemporary interiors, with postcard-perfect views of the Camel Estuary and Padstow Harbour, and with 7 excellent beaches close by, the hotel is an idyllic, luxury seaside getaway.
For eating and drinking, the hotel’s Kitchen, Bar & Terrace offers casual, all-day dining – with those enviable views, and al fresco terrace dining. Food is light, seasonal, and locally-sourced, to showcase the region’s flavours. The menu also features many of Harbour Hotel’s signature dishes, including the Harbour Fish Pie, sensational seafood burger, tempura prawns, home-cured smoked salmon and divine desserts. There’s an extensive drinks menu, featuring eclectic wines, our own exclusive cocktails (including a selection of espresso martinis and negronis), local craft beers and a selection of locally-made gins. Perfect for sipping on the terrace whilst drinking in the view.
For those wanting to get outdoors and enjoy this wonderful corner of Cornwall, there are fishing and pleasure boating trips, outstanding cycling along the Camel Valley Trail, and surfing at some of Europe’s best surf beaches (with surf schools), all close by. Padstow’s town has fascinating shops and upmarket boutiques mixed in with excellent cafes and restaurants, including Rick Stein’s famous seafood restaurant. For hikers, the town sits on the famous South West Coast Path. Also don’t miss the National Lobster Hatchery, which provides visitors a fascinating insight into the hard work required to keep up a sustainable lobster population in Cornwall. See our recommendations of the top activities, attractions & events around the hotel here. On request, the hotel can prepare you a sumptuous picnic to take with you, or arrange bike hire.
All of our hotels are accessible, and help is always on hand for those who need assistance. Families are welcome.
Lobster rearing
A short video about rearing lobsters at the New England Aquarium.
Crayfish at Cynrig Hatchery
We’ve been rearing crayfish here at Cynrig hatchery for the last nearly 10 years now – so the white clawed crayfish, our native crayfish.
What we’ve done is we take buried females from the wild on an annual basis - that’s the egg laden females - bring them back to the hatchery and hatch the eggs in a controlled condition in re-circulated units.
The reason for that is that in the wild you’re looking at 5% or less survival, whereas here in the hatchery, we can get in excess of 70%, sometimes in excess of 80% survival.
What we do then is we’ll grow those juveniles to maybe 12 months of age at the earliest or sometimes a bit older, maybe 18 months, maybe pushing 2 years and we release those into specially selected “ark” sites.
These ark sites we’re choosing to safeguard the species, they’ve got to be discreet from any possible Signal populations and need to be above impassable barriers – maybe discreet still water bodies.
We’re looking at the water quality of these sites – it needs to be pristine, and crayfish are a really good indicator species for water quality. If you’ve got crayfish in your stream you know your water quality is pretty good.
This year we’ve been back and surveyed a number of release sites, on the Wye catchment and we initially introduced juveniles there in 2012/ 13 and 14. So we went back in 2017 and found subsequently, those original animals in situ, but this year was the first year we’ve found first generation wild juveniles, so we’ve actually managed to establish a breeding population from introduced captive-bred animals.
That’s really encouraging for us and shows that the project is working. I’m really excited about it.
