Jatiyo Sriti Soudho (The National Martyr Monument)
Jatiyo Smriti Soudho is the national martyr monument of Bangladesh. It is the symbol of the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Bangladesh. Here “Jatiyo” means “National”, “Smriti” means “Memorial” and “Soudho” means “Monument”. This is one of the beautiful monuments of Bangladesh and it is situated at Savar, near the capital (Dhaka) of Bangladesh. This is one of the major tourist attractions of Bangladesh and it reminds us our great heroes, who gave up their valuable lives for the
independence of Bangladesh. Several mass-graves and a pool of water are placed in front of this beautiful monument.

Jatiyo Sriti Soudho is very important monument for Bangladesh’s history so, Bangladesh Government was very aware about this monument. The main plans of this monument were initiated after the independence in 1972. But due to many problems, it was delayed after 1972-1978. But in 1978, a nation-wide design competition was held in June for the site selection, road and land development about this monument. Among the 57 competitors Architect Syed Moinul Hossain's design proposal was approved. The main structure, the artificial lake and other facilities were completed of this monument in 1982.

This beautiful complex is spread over an area of 34 hectares (84 acres) and it is wrapped around by a green belt of 10 hectares (24.7 acre). This beautiful environment creates this monument very attractive. The monument tower is made by concrete and other structures and pavements are made by red bricks. This red bricks reminds us about the blood of the 3 million people, who sacrificed their blood for the liberation of Bangladesh. This monument is composed with 7 isosceles triangular pyramid shaped structures but the middle one being the tallest. The highest point of the monument is 150 feet. 7 isosceles triangular pyramids remind us our seven Bir Sreshthos. This unique arrangement of the planes has created a structure that seems to change its configuration when viewed from different angles. Several mass graves and a beautiful reflection water body are placed in front of this monument. If anybody enters into the complex through the main gate, he or she can see the monument axially. But to reach it one has to walk through different ups and downs of pavements and cross an artificial lake by a bridge-all these represent the struggle for independence.

The Public Works Department of the Government of Bangladesh supervised the construction of the project. But this project was constructed in three times. The first project was involved in acquiring land and constructing road for the project. It was in 1972. The cost of this project was 26 lacs. The second project was in 1974-1982. The cost of this project was 3.77 crores. This project was involved in to build the mass graves, pavements, parking spaces, helipad etc. And the third project was in August 1982. The cost of this project was 848.65 lacs. This project was involved in to build the main structure, apart from the artificial lake, green belt, cafeteria, housing etc.

Now, this monument shows the Bangladesh’s history and this is one of the major tourist spot of Bangladesh. Everyday lots of people visit here to see this extra-ordinary monument. Every year on 16 December, lots of people visit here.

Jatiyo Sriti Shoudho জাতীয় স্মৃতি সৌধ or National Martyrs Memorialor National Monuments is the national monument of Bangladesh is the symbol in the memory of the velour and the sacrifice of all those who gave their lives in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, which brought independence and separated Bangladesh from Pakistan.

National Martyrs Memorial is situated in Nabinagar, Savar approximately 35 km from Dhaka. The memorial designed by architect Moinul Hossain is dedicated to the sacred memory of the millions of unknown martyrs of the war of liberation. This Martyrs Memorial is a symbol of Bengali nationalism. It is really a scenic beauty of 108 acre of land. The top of this monument is 150 ft. high, which consists other 07 triangular monuments.


Plans for the monument were initiated in 1976. Following the site selection, road and land development, a nationwide design competition was held in June,1978. Following evaluation of the 57 submissions, Syed Mainul Hossain's design was chosen. The main structure and the artificial lake and other facilities were completed in 1982. It was Inaugurated at 16 December 1982.

The architecture is composed of seven pairs of triangular-shaped walls or prisms; the outermost pair being the shortest in height but widest in span, the inner pairs gradually change their aspect ratio and the innermost pair thus forms the peak point of the architecture. Each of these seven pairs of walls represents a significant chapter in the history of Bangladesh, namely the Language Movement in 1952, the Election of United Front in 1954, the Constitution Movement in 1956, the Education Movement in 1962, 6-point Movement in 1966, the Mass Uprising in 1969, and finally the climactic event of Liberation War in 1971, through which Bangladesh was liberated.

Bangladesh National Monument is located in Nabinagar of Savar upazilla, 35 kilometers from Dhaka city. It stands as the icon of bravery and sacrifice in the liberation war against Pakistani military junta who wanted to occupy and suck up our country rather than to share economy, culture and politics. In 1978 a competition was arranged to choose the design and among 57 competitors the design of architect Moinul Hossain was selected. It was built in 3 phases and in the year 1982 the construction third and final phase has been completed.

জাতীয় স্মৃতিসৌধ প্রাথমিক পর্যায় শুরু হয়েছিল ১৯৭২ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে। এই পর্যায়ে ২৬ লক্ষ টাকা ব্যয়ে এই স্মৃতিসৌধের জন্য জমি অধিগ্রহণ ও রাস্তা তৈরি করা হয়। ১৯৭৭ খ্রিষ্টাব্দ পর্যন্ত এর আনুসঙ্গিক অন্যান্য কার্যক্রম শেষ করা হয়। এই পর্যায়ে ব্যয় হয় প্রায় ৮ কোটি ৭৭ লক্ষ টাকা। এরপর মূল স্মৃতিসৌধ নির্মাণের জন্য, ১৯৭৮ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে বিভিন্ন স্থপতিদের কাছে নকশা আহ্বান করা হয়। মোট ৫৭টি নকশার ভিতরে স্থপতি সৈয়দ মাইনুল হোসেন-এর নকশাটি মনোনীত হয়। ১৯৮২ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে এর নির্মাণকাজ সম্পন্ন হয়। এই পর্যায়ে ব্যয় হয় ৮৪৮.৬৫ লক্ষ টাকা।
সমগ্র স্মৃতি সৌধটি ৩৪ হেক্টর (৮৪ একর) জায়গার উপর স্থাপিত হয়েছে। আর এর বাইরে রয়েছে ১০ হেক্টর (২৪.৭ একর) জায়গা জুড়ে সবুজ ভূমি। স্মৃতি সৌধের অবকাঠামো ও পেভমেন্ট তৈরি করা হয়েছে মজবুত লাল ইট দিয়ে। মূল সৌধস্তম্ভটি ছোটো থেকে বড় আকারে সাতটি ত্রিভূজাকৃতির কংক্রিটের দেয়াল দিয়ে তৈরি। এর ভিতরে সবচেয়ে বড় দেওয়ালটির উচ্চতা ১৫০ ফুট।

এই মূলস্তম্ভের সামনে রয়েছে একটি কৃত্রিম জলাশয়। এই জলাশয়ের দুই পাশে আছে বাগান এবং গণকবর। উল্লেখ্য ১৯৭১ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে পাকিস্তনি সৈন্যরা সাভার অঞ্চলের বহু মানুষকে হত্যা করে নিচু জমিতে বা খাল কেটে এই অঞ্চলে পুঁতে রাখে। স্বাধীনতার পরে এই অঞ্চলে বধ্যভূমি ও গণকবর আবিষ্কৃত হয়।

National Martyrs' Memorial is one of the greatest monuments in the history Bangladesh. It is located in Savar, about 35 km north-west of Dhaka, symbolizes the velour and sacrifice of the martyrs who laid down their lives for the liberation of Bangladesh. It was designed by Syed Mainul Hossain. Plans for the monument were initiated right after the independence, in 1972. The main structure and the artificial lake and other facilities were completed in 1982. The monument is composed of 7 isosceles triangular pyramid shaped structures, with the middle one being the tallest. The highest point of the monument is 150 feet. There is an artificial lake, and several mass graves in front of the main monument. The architect has used concrete for the monument while all the other structures and pavements of the complex are made of red bricks. It symbolizes that it is built with concrete but made of blood. Once one enters the complex through the main gate he or she can see the monument axially but to reach it one has to walk through different ups and downs of pavements and cross an artificial lake by a bridge-all these represent the struggle for independence.

জাতীয় স্মৃতিসৌধ বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধের শহীদদের স্মৃতির উদ্দেশ্যে নিবেদিত একটি স্মারক স্থাপনা। এটি সাভারে অবস্থিত। এর নকশা প্রণয়ন করেছেন স্থপতি সৈয়দ মাইনুল হোসেন। এখানে মুক্তিযুদ্ধে নিহতদের দশটি গণকবর রয়েছে।
১৯৭২ সালের ১৬ ডিসেম্বর বিজয় দিবসে বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রপতি শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ঢাকা শহর থেকে ২৫ কিলোমিটার দূরে ঢাকা-আরিচা মহাসড়কের পাশে নবীনগরে এই স্মৃতিসৌধের শিলান্যাস করেন। ১৯৭৮ সালে রাষ্ট্রপতি জিয়াউর রহমান স্মৃতিসৌধটি নির্মাণের উদ্যাগ গ্রহণ করেন এবং নক্‌শা আহবান করা হয়। ১৯৭৮-এর জুন মাসে প্রাপ্ত ৫৭টি নকশার মধ্যে সৈয়দ মাইনুল হোসেন প্রণীত নকশাটি গৃহীত হয়। ১৯৭৯ সালে মূল স্মৃতিসৌধের নির্মাণ কাজ শুরু হয় এবং ১৯৮২ সালে বিজয় দিবসের অল্প পূর্বে সমাপ্ত হয়। ২০০২ সালের গৃহীত প্রকল্প অনুযায়ী এখানে একটি অগ্নিশিখা, সুবিস্তৃত ম্যুরাল এবং একটি গ্রন্থাগার স্থাপনের পরিকল্পনা আছে।

স্মৃতিসৌধের মিনার ব্যতিত প্রকল্পটির মহা-পরিকল্পনা ও নৈসর্গিক পরিকল্পনাসহ অন্য সকল নির্মাণ কাজের স্থাপত্য নকশা প্রণয়ন করে গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ সরকারের স্থাপত্য অধিদপ্তর। নির্মাণ কাজের গোড়া পত্তন হয় ১৯৭২ সালের জুলাই মাসে এবং শেষ হয় ১৯৮৮ সালে। গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ সরকারের গৃহায়ন ও গণপূর্ত মন্ত্রণালয়ধীন গণপূর্ত অধিদপ্তর সমগ্র নির্মাণ কাজ সম্পন্ন করে। বর্তমানে সৌধটির নির্মাণ কাজ তিন পর্যায়ে মোট ১৩.০০ কোটি টাকা ব্যয়ে সম্পন্ন হয়।

ঢাকার অদূরে সাভার থানার অন্তর্গত নবীনগর এলাকায় জাতীয় স্মৃতিসৌধ অবস্থিত। মুক্তিযুদ্ধে জীবন উৎসর্গকারী যোদ্ধাদের সম্মান জানাতে এবং স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধকে স্মরণীয় করে রাখতে ১৯৭২ সালের ১৬ই ডিসেম্বর জাতির জনক বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবর রহমান স্মৃতিসৌধের ভিত্তি প্রস্তর স্থাপন করেন। প্রকৌশলী মইনুল হোসেনের নকশা মোতাবেক ১৯৮২ সালের আগষ্ট মাসে স্মৃতিসৌধের কাজ শুরু হয়। প্রায় ৮৪ একর জমির উপর স্মৃতিসৌধ গড়ে উঠেছে।

স্মৃতিসৌধে ৭টি কংক্রিট নির্মিত ত্রিভুজাকৃতির স্তম্ভ রয়েছে। প্রথম দর্শনে সর্বোচ্চ স্তম্ভটির উচ্চতা ১৫০ ফুট। এই স্তম্ভগুলোর মধ্যে প্রথমটি উচ্চতায় ছোট হলেও প্রস্থে সবচেয়ে বড়। এটির অর্থ আন্দোলনের সূচনা অর্থাৎ ১৯৫২ সালের ভাষা আন্দোলন। পরবর্তী স্তম্ভগুলো দ্বারা যথাক্রমে ১৯৫৪, ১৯৫৮, ১৯৬২, ১৯৬৬, ১৯৬৯ এবং ১৯৭১ সাল কে বুঝানো হয়েছে। এই স্মৃতি সৌধের বিশেষ বৈশিষ্ট্য হলো একেক দিক থেকে একেক রকম মনে হয়।

সকাল ৯টা থেকে সন্ধ্যা ৬টা পর্যন্ত দর্শকদের জন্য উন্মুক্ত থাকে। বিশেষ দিন স্বাধীনতা দিবস, বিজয় দিবস, ঈদ, পূজা ও ১লা বৈশাখে ব্যাপক ভিড় হয় এখানে। এখানে আরো রয়েছে বিভিন্ন সময় বাংলাদেশ সফরে আসা অন্যান্য দেশের রাষ্ট্র প্রধানগণের নিজ হাতে লাগানো বৃক্ষরাজি। মতিঝিল ও গুলিস্তান থেকে বিআরটিসি, হানিফ ও গ্রীনওয়ে ,রাজধানি, বাস সার্ভিস সরাসরি নবীনগর পর্যন্ত যাতায়াত করে।
