Construction of Belfast, the first Royal Navy ship to be named after the capital city of Northern Ireland and one of ten Town-class cruisers, began in December 1936. She was launched on St Patrick's Day, 17 March 1938. Commissioned in early August 1939 shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, Belfast was initially part of the British naval blockade against Germany. In November 1939 Belfast struck a German mine and spent more than two years undergoing extensive repairs. Returning to action in November 1942 with improved firepower, radar equipment and armour, Belfast was the largest and arguably most powerful cruiser in the Royal Navy at the time. Belfast saw action escorting Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union during 1943, and in December 1943 played an important role in the Battle of North Cape, assisting in the destruction of the German warship Scharnhorst. In June 1944 Belfast took part in Operation Overlord supporting the Normandy landings. In June 1945 Belfast was redeployed to the Far East to join the British Pacific Fleet, arriving shortly before the end of the Second World War. Belfast saw further combat action in 1950--52 during the Korean War and underwent an extensive modernisation between 1956 and 1959. A number of further overseas commissions followed before Belfast entered reserve in 1963

Naming of ship after MacDonald House bombers digs up painful memories - 07Feb2014
SINGAPORE: The move by Indonesia to name a warship after the two marines who bombed MacDonald House, leaving three dead and 33 injured, has dredged up painful memories among Singaporeans affected by the blast.
They said the attack took away their loved ones and left many with permanent scars, and they cannot understand why the Indonesian government has chosen to revisit the incident now, almost 50 years later.
The Singapore government has registered the country's concerns and asked Indonesia to consider the implications of the moves, especially the effect it will have on the families of the victims.
The bombing, which occurred on the afternoon of March 10 in 1965, tore a massive hole in the MacDonald House building's floor and even ripped out a lift door.
The impact of the bomb placed on the floor just beside the lift shattered all the windows within 300 feet and damaged all the vehicles outside the building.
One of the three victims was a bank employee, Elizabeth Choo, 36.
Mdm Choo's daughter, Janet Ng, said the two Indonesian marines who were behind the bomb attack are not heroes, and she still thinks about her mother.
On the day of the execution, I was called up and (the two bombers) said that they would love to see me to ask for forgiveness. I told them I forgive them, but I cannot do anything for them, to save them.
Whenever I pass by Orchard Road, MacDonald House, (I think) that's where my mother died, leaving six of us as orphans overnight.
Today, it's still painful -- she disappeared in thin air overnight, and we depended on her to survive, to... bring us up.
Why did they want to bring it up again after so long? Why did they want to do it, to bring back the pain to all the three families again?
I wish that the whole subject is closed, and I want to thank the government for trying to stop the whole issue, said Ms Ng.
Another person who suffered both mentally and physically from the incident is Kenny Yeo, who was 24 years old when it happened.
The attack has scarred him for life, after he sustained injuries that needed 366 stitches all over his body, and left him blind in one eye.
I am angry, but since this is an event of the past, we should just forgive. If they want to provoke us, just let them -- unless we want to clash with them, then I have nothing to say, said Mr Yeo.
Singaporeans Channel NewsAsia spoke with said Indonesia's move to have the ship named after the two convicted marines is inappropriate.
Some said the name will bring back bad memories to Singaporeans and families of the victims, and that it is inappropriate and in very bad taste to dig up old wounds.
However, others said that Singaporeans should remember the past as a history lesson and to forgive.
Meanwhile, the man tasked to help mend bilateral ties between Singapore and Indonesia after the 1965 MacDonald House bombing, said the attack was an aggressive move against Singapore's internal security.
Mr Lee Khoon Choy served as Singapore's ambassador to Indonesia between 1970 and 1974.
In 1973, Singapore's then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew sprinkled flowers on the graves of the two marines behind the bombing during an official visit to Indonesia -- restoring bilateral relations.
But the former ambassador said the attack had serious implications at the time.
Of course it shows an aggressive motive -- to interfere with our internal security, to bomb and kill our people.
He added: If Singaporeans bomb Jakarta, it's bad. You should not interfere with other countries... it's wrong.
I feel that once Mr Lee Kuan Yew put flowers, the matter is settled. You should not take it out again. They're already in heroes' graves.

Fleet Air Arm Museum: Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier Experience
Visit The War Years blog The Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm Museum, Somerset. Europe's largest naval aviation collection of helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. RNAS Yeovilton Ilchester, Somerset BA22 8HW 01935 840565, Although it's looking a little dated, after all it's been a while since the navy flew F4 Phantoms and Buccaneers, but the aircraft carrier experience is pretty good fun and informative.
Lockheed Martin marks maiden flight of VH 92A presidential helicopter
Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) today announced the first flight of a VH-92A configured test aircraft in support of the U.S. Marine Corps’ VH-92A Presidential Helicopter Replacement Program. The July 28 flight signals the start of the 250 hour flight test program, which will take place at Lockheed Martin facilities in Owego, New York.
The aircraft achieved its first flight, and later that same day completed a second flight at Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford, Connecticut. Total flight time for the two sorties was one hour and included hover control checks, low speed flight, and a pass of the airfield.
“This first flight of the VH-92A configured test aircraft is an important milestone for the program,” said Spencer Elani, director VH-92A program at Sikorsky. “Having independently tested the aircraft’s components and subsystems, we are now moving forward to begin full aircraft system qualification via the flight test program.”
As the flight test program proceeds, this test aircraft (Engineering Development Model 1, or EDM-1) will be joined by an additional test aircraft (EDM-2) over the course of the 12-month flight test program. EDM-2 is on track for its first flight later this year.
The VH-92A aircraft is based on Sikorsky’s successful and FAA-certified S-92A commercial aircraft, which recently surpassed one million flight hours. The S-92A aircraft, assembled in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, is being modified to include integration of government-defined missions systems and an executive interior.
“With this successful first flight on the books, we look forward to completion of Sikorsky’s flight test program, operational testing and production of this aircraft to support the Office of the President of the United States,” said U.S. Marine Corps Col. Robert Pridgen, program manager for the Naval Air System Command’s Presidential Helicopter’s Program Office.
The U.S. Navy awarded a $1.24 billion fixed-price incentive Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) contract with production options to Sikorsky on May 7, 2014. The EMD contract will produce a total of six aircraft: two test aircraft and four production aircraft. The production options for the remaining 17 aircraft will be finalized in FY19.
The VH-92A will enter into service in 2020. The VH-92A will transport the president and vice president of the United States and other officials. Sikorsky brings unmatched experience and a proven track record to this mission having flown every U.S. commander-in-chief since President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The VH-92A will continue this legacy for decades to come.
Snowing in Canberra
Snow is falling in the capital, with Canberrans taking to social media to express their excitement.
Reports of flakes falling across the ACT have taken cold Canberrans by surprise amid a dreary day of wind, rain and a possible thunderstorm.
Weatherzone meteorologist Anthony Duke said he had received reports of snow in parts of Canberra, which he suspected was lightly falling in areas at a higher ground.
Canberra, according to the OECD, is officially the best city in the world.
The Australian Capital Territory has topped Paris, London and New York, as well as Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane in the OECD Regional Wellbeing study results released on Monday.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development looked at nine measures of “wellbeing” including education, jobs, environment and income. Australia topped the countries list.
Canberra is the capital city of Australia. With a population of 381,488, it is Australia's largest inland city and the eighth-largest city overall. The city is located at the northern end of theAustralian Capital Territory (ACT), 280 km (170 mi) south-west of Sydney, and 660 km (410 mi) north-east of Melbourne. A resident of Canberra is known as a Canberran.
The site of Canberra was selected for the location of the nation's capital in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne, Australia's two largest cities. It is unusual among Australian cities, being an entirely planned city outside of any state, similar to the American Federal District of Columbia. Following an international contest for the city's design, a blueprint by the Chicago architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin was selected and construction commenced in 1913.[5] The Griffins' plan featured geometric motifs such as circles, hexagons and triangles, and was centred on axes aligned with significant topographical landmarks in the Australian Capital Territory.
The city's design was influenced by the garden city movement and incorporates significant areas of natural vegetation that have earned Canberra the title of the bush capital. The growth and development of Canberra were hindered by the World Wars and the Great Depression, which exacerbated a series of planning disputes and the ineffectiveness of a procession of bodies that were created in turn to oversee the development of the city. The national capital emerged as a thriving city after World War II, as Prime Minister Robert Menzies championed its development and the National Capital Development Commission was formed with executive powers. Although the Australian Capital Territory is now self-governing, the federal government retains some influence through the National Capital Authority.
As the seat of the government of Australia, Canberra is the site of Parliament House, the High Court and numerous government departments and agencies. It is also the location of many social and cultural institutions of national significance, such as the Australian War Memorial, Australian National University, Australian Institute of Sport, National Gallery, National Museum and the National Library. The Australian Army's officer corps are trained at the Royal Military College, Duntroon and the Australian Defence Force Academy is also located in the capital.
The ACT, like Washington, D.C. in the United States, is independent of any state, to prevent any one state from gaining an advantage by hosting the seat of Federal power. Unlike Washington, however, the ACT has voting representation in the Federal Parliament, and has its own independent Legislative Assembly and government, similar to the states.
As the city has a high proportion of public servants, the federal government contributes the largest percentage of Gross State Product and is the largest single employer in Canberra. As the seat of government, the unemployment rate is lower and the average income higher than the national average, while property prices are relatively high, in part due to comparatively restricted development regulations. Tertiary education levels are higher, while the population is younger.

(Flypast)
A flypast is a ceremonial or honorific flight by a group of aircraft or a single aircraft. The term flypast is used in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. In the United States, the terms flyover and flyby are used.
Flypasts are often tied in with Royal or state events, anniversaries, celebrations - and occasionally funerary or memorial occasions. Sometimes flypasts occur in special situations, to honour someone or to celebrate certain types of aircraft. They have affinities with parades, of which they form the aerial component. Often they occur in purely display contexts at airshows, but it is the flypasts linked with civic, ceremonial and national pride, that imprint themselves on a nation's memory. These spectacular and daring displays of military - and occasionally passenger - aircraft, are described in broadcast and print media as historic.
Flypasts are regularly featured in public and ceremonial life in the United Kingdom, where they function as a particular kind of aerial salute. They serve to show respect, display aircraft, showcase flying skills and as a form of entertainment to delight the public, for example, during their annual appearance after Trooping the Colour. Flypasts reflect milestones of national life; varying in scope from personal, to community and local, to military, to national. They may honour individuals in private or public life or commemorate happenings at a particular location. They are also used to honour aircraft. On occasions both small and large they may occur over land or sea, sometimes connected with memorial or thanksgiving services.
In Commonwealth countries, notably Singapore, Canada and Australia, they occur on national days and occasionally on anniversaries. They are seen more rarely in other territories.
(Locations)
Flypast locations are usually of national importance. In the UK, these include Buckingham Palace, where the Royal Family on the balcony will join the thousands of spectators in streets and parks below. Other London settings have included the River Thames. The 50th and 60th anniversaries of World War II were celebrated by flypasts over Normandy in France. Festivities of Trafalgar 200 were centred over Portsmouth and at sea.
Settings have included the National Stadium, The Float@Marina Bay and the Padang in Singapore; Rajpath in New Delhi, India; Pakistan's Parliament House in Islamabad; Australia's Parliament House and Anzac Parade to the Australian War Memorial, in Canberra; Parliament Hill, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; and Rizal Park in Manila, Philippines.
(Early flypasts)
The connection of Trooping the Colour with Royal Air Force flypasts began in 1913 when the Royal Flying Corps Military Wing performed a flypast for King George V on Laffan's Plain, near Aldershot.
On 6 July 1935, George V carried out his Silver Jubilee Review of the Royal Air Force at RAF Duxford and RAF Mildenhall which included 200 aircraft on the ground and a flypast of 350 aircraft.
King George VI attended a flypast at the opening ceremony of the Empire Exhibition, Scotland 1938 at Ibrox Stadium on 5 May 1938, with his consort Queen Elizabeth.
(United Kingdom)
Flypasts are a regular occurrence in the United Kingdom at national events or commemorations. In 1954 the Queen conducted a Coronation Review of the Royal Air Force at RAF Odiham which included a flypast by about 640 aircraft - among them 440 jet aircraft
On many occasions, the flypasts are performed by the Red Arrows aerobatic team of the Royal Air Force, but on more important events like Royal occasions, for example the Queen's 80th birthday during 2006, was a flypast following the Trooping the Colour. Headed by the Lancaster with 2 Hurricanes and 2 Spitfires (Battle of Britain Memorial Flight), the 49 aircraft in 9 formations included Typhoons, Jaguars, Tristar, VC10, C-17A Globemaster III and E-3 Sentry. The highlight was a Diamond 9 formation of Tornado GR4s and the appearance of a Canberra escorted by the Red Arrows,

Royal Hobart Regatta (1962)
This short film is taken from a compilation, by the Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office, of a number of films of the Royal Hobart Regatta, an annual event held on the Derwent River since the late 1830s. The compilation includes a wide range of sailing and other water sports as well as activities on the fore-shore, and images from eight different regattas, from 1913, the late 1930s, 1940s and the 1960s. Dardanup Heritage Park - Western Australia
We had two main destinations to see outside central Bunbury. The first was Dardanup Heritage Park which was one place we have been told over and over again that we should visit.
It isn't far from Bunbury and can be reached via the Outer Ring Road and then south into Moore Road. Watch for the sign as you drive south on Moore Road.
The entry fee wasn't what I would call cheap but I soon came to realise why, when I saw the extent of the exhibits inside.
The park is probably the best single attraction in the area eclipsing even the wonder of Gnomesville. It is by far the best privately operated museum of its type that we have seen anywhere in W.A.
The collection of vehicles, machinery and memorabilia at the Heritage Park is really second to none. I would suggest that you don't go for a short visit because if you really want to enjoy this place, set aside at least two or three hours or even more.
The park opens on Sundays and Wednesdays from 9:30am to 4pm. I think it would be great if it was open more days in the week as I am sure many visitors miss out if they are not in the area during the opening times.
We shot plenty of footage at the park and will be producing a video showing you why you really should take the time to visit.
Most of the vehicles and machinery have been fully restored to working condition and it is great to see some of the vehicles being driven around. There are also live demonstrations of Tangye engines and for those who are interested in military history, the Bunbury RSL has a wonderful military collection housed in the drill hall.
This was my favourite exhibit as I have always had an interest in military equipment and history. The curator, Gerry Tyrrell, is great to talk to. He has a wealth of knowledge about the exhibits and if I had time, I would have loved to stop and chat with him a lot longer.
The drill hall houses a Leopard tank and this is one of the very few in the world that you can actually have a look inside.
If you need a break during your visit to the park, I would recommend a coffee and cake or a lunch break at the café. You will probably need a bit of a rest at some stage as there is just so much to see. I honestly cannot recommend this place highly enough. If you are in the area make sure you are there either Sunday or Wednesday. If you aren't in the area, plan a trip and go!
