Mozambique clears air on previoulsy undeclared $1.35 billion loan
Mozambique has given the IMF a set of documents and owned up to as much as 1.35 billion dollars of undeclared sovereign borrowing that may have tipped it into an unsustainable debt trap. The borrowing is in addition to 850 million dollars of 'tuna bond' issued in 2013 that had to be restructured last month as the country struggles to meet repayments. The International Monetary Fund said last week it had got wind of more than a billion of undisclosed borrowing. But Finance Minister Adriano Maleiane dismissed the allegations. The borrowed money was allegedly spent on naval interceptors, radar stations, off-shore patrol vessels and aircraft. Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho then led a delegation to the United States to see IMF Managing Director, Christine Lagarde and explain the debt surge.
Coffee growers help reforest Mozambique's Mount Gorongosa +REPLAY+
(29 Aug 2019) LEAD IN:
Mozambique could be on its way to becoming one of Africa's major coffee producers thanks to a major increase of coffee production on Mount Gorongosa.
Coffee giant Nespresso has taken an interest in the project, which is regenerating the area by providing an income for locals and restoring the rapidly eroding rainforest.
STORY-LINE:
Querida Barequinha intently sorts through the coffee beans laid out on racks to dry in the sun, plucking out any that are cracked or misshapen.
I like growing coffee because it earns cash that goes right into my pocket, she said, with a darting smile. I can buy soap, cooking oil, schoolbooks and other household items. It's very useful.
Barequinha has been growing coffee for four years on the upper slopes of Mount Gorongosa, where clouds frequently cover the rainforest canopy.
A mother of seven, Barequinha says she is encouraging her family to join her in coffee production.
I would love my kids to have the hope of growing coffee and what it would mean for them, because it offers us a source of hope, she says, in chiGorongosi, a dialect of the Sena language.
Barequinha is one of 400 Mozambican farmers producing coffee that both helps locals earn an income while at the same time restoring the rapidly eroding rainforest of Mount Gorongosa.
At the start of this month (August 2019) a peace agreement was finally signed between Mozambique's government and Renamo rebels who had been insurging against the regime for 6 years.
The rebels' military headquarters are nearby and with peace now on the mountaintop, there are plans to dramatically scale up coffee production, as part of the national park's plan to boost the incomes of people living around the park as well as revitalising the environment.
Mount Gorongosa rises 1,863 metres (6,112 feet) above Mozambique's central plains and the tropical hardwood forest of its upper rainy regions is being stripped by local farmers who want to grow maize.
Coffee is a crop that can stop that deforestation, say park experts.
Shade-grown coffee shrubs produce better tasting coffee beans, so the trees are planted among indigenous trees.
Matthew Jordan is an associate director of the Agricultural Livelihoods Program of Gorongosa National Park and he says interspersing local trees such as albizias and other crops with coffee trees vastly improves the quality of the coffee bean.
This is native hardwood trees planted alongside the coffee trees. And what that does is it provides its shade about 60 percent, 60/40 percent shade for the coffee. And that creates this really high quality coffee, says Jordan.
Not only does planting more trees allow the coffee to thrive, but it has improved the environment.
We're in an exponential growth phase. So we started with this 40,000 trees which is, what the coffee that's produced behind me that's where that comes from, is this pilot phase. And now this year we've already planted 300,000 coffee trees, says Jordan.
That's the type of scale that's really required to create a maximum impact for the community.
Twenty years ago Gorongosa park was derelict as a result of the country's devastating civil war (1977-1992) and much of its wildlife had been poached.
The park is now being revived with help from a non-governmental organisation supported by American philanthropist Greg Carr who is working with the Mozambican government.
The organisation allocates more than half of its annual budget to supporting the communities that live around the park.

Fossils From Angola Bring Strange Yet Familiar Ocean into View
Some of you may be familiar with mythical sea monsters. For example, Scotland's infamous Loch Ness Monster Nessie, and Giganto, fictional beasts of comic book fame. But millions of years ago, there were real-life sea monsters that lived and thrived in what we now call the South Atlantic Ocean. Now a Smithsonian museum in Washington is giving visitors a chance to learn about these ancient marine reptiles. VOA's Julie Taboh has more.

Nrz refurbishes nandi -mkwasine railway line
THE National Railways of Zimbabwe NRZ, in partnership with the government and the European Union, has refurbished the NandiMkwasine railway line in Chiredzi at a cost of more than $10 million in an effort to turnaround the fortunes of the ailing parastatal. BY MTHANDAZO NYONI In a statement yesterday, NRZ public relations manager Nyasha Maravanyika said the rehabilitation of the line was a result of the collaboration between the parastatal, the government and the European Union which provided the bulk of the funding under the National Sugar Adaptation Trust through Canelands Trust, an organisation that supports outgrower sugarcane farmers in the Lowveld Tongaat Hullet estates. He said work to rehabilitate the old track, made of rail manufactured between 1930 and 1956, started in 2013 and was done in two phases. “The refurbishment exercise saw an upgrading of the track from 30kgmetre track to a heavier 40kgmetre track and the replacement of steel sleepers with 34 000 concrete sleepers,”...

ABOUT US:
We originally quit our jobs and sold it all to travel the world for as long as we could afford. We went nearly broke after 6 months as we depleted most of our savings while traveling Cairo-Egypt, Dar Es Salaam-Tanzania, Maputo-Mozambique and along the Garden Route of South Africa: Johannesburg, Kruger National Park, Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.
We were then at a crossroads, with our savings nearly depleted we had enough for one of the following: 1. Fly home, settle and/or save up more money to travel. 2. Fly to China where I (Vic) had a friend teaching English. We chose Chengdu China. Where we lived and worked for nearly 6 months, making visa runs every 2 months to nearby countries such as Hong Kong and Bangkok-Thailand. We decided to leave Chengdu in November 2017 after resolving pregnancy complications for-soon-to be baby #2. After getting cleared for strictly overland travel, while pregnant, we embarked on a 6-month overland Journey through Vietnam(3months), Cambodia(2 months, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap), and Thailand(2 weeks). We then arrived in Malaysia to have a water birth and live for the next 9 months. The baby was born 2 weeks early on May 19th, 2018. While living in Malaysia we also had to do 2 visa runs (3 month intervals), the first time we took a train to the Thai border then immediately went back, same day, within minutes. We also flew to Medan Indonesia for about 1 week. After Malaysia, we spent 2 months in Phuket Thailand. Went back to Penang Malaysia for 1 more month. Finally, we visited Chengdu China one more time, for 1 month, primarily to attend a Chinese friend's wedding.
Now we are seasonal travelers! Traveling non-stop for up to 6 months at a time! We typically head back to Chicago early summer, Mayish, and stay through the first semester, Decemberish, so that our eldest daughter can attend grade school!
We work year-round, from our laptops doing various things remotely. Everything from teaching children English online to managing Airbnbs, custom website services, working our investment portfolios, graphic design work to stock trading. But our specialty is family photography and videography. We love to partner with various brands and tourism boards as we travel to help showcase their products, services, city or country!
We started as a family of 3. Just your average young couple with a child. Living in Chicago's north suburbs, working 9-5's and looking forward to the weekends. Now, almost 3 years later, we are a family of 4. Welcoming our second baby in Malaysia! This is our life! And it can be yours too!!!

Brazil's (Re)Encounter with Africa
This presentation will explore “Africa” as a cultural and historical construct and the museum as a space which discerns, creates, and writes historical discourse of and about “Africa” in the present. Anna Mester will study two exhibitions A nova mão afro-brasileira and África ancestral e contemporânea: as artes do Benin to understand how the museum serves as spaces of discursive and historical contention for the (re)writing of Black histories across the South Atlantic.
Co-sponsored by Africana Studies.
