Lebanon is a country in Western Asia. It is bordered by Syria to the north and east and Israel to the south, while Cyprus is west across the Mediterranean Sea. Lebanon's location at the crossroads of the Mediterranean Basin and the Arabian hinterland facilitated its rich history and shaped a cultural identity of religious and ethnic diversity. At just 10,452 km2 (4,036 sq. mi.), it is the smallest recognized sovereign state on the mainland Asian continent.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BEIRUT
A must see located at the edge of Achrafieh is the National Museum of Beirut . Opened in 1943, the museum displays an overview of Lebanon's pre-war history and an archeological collection from the prehistoric to the Mamluk period.
Located on the Green Line during the Civil War, the building was severely damaged and closed in 1975. The museum reopened to the public in 1999. Don't miss the documentary Revival, telling the interesting story of how they managed to protect statues, sarcophagi and friezes by putting them in concrete.
The museum is open from 9.00 until 17:00 (closed on Mondays and holidays) and the entrance fee is 5,000 LBP (students and children 1,000 LBP)

The National Museum of Beirut is the principal museum of archaeology in Lebanon. The collection was begun after World War I, and the museum was officially opened in 1942. This is Beirut's major cultural institution. Its impressive, magnificently displayed collection of archaeological artefacts offers a great overview of Lebanon’s history and the civilisations that impacted this cultural crossroads. Highlights include the famous, much-photographed Phoenician gilded bronze figurines found buried near the Obelisk Temple at Byblos; a series of human-faces Phoenician sarcophagi and a frescoed Roman tomb, these latter in the outstanding basement, reopened in 2016.

Mim Museum - Mineral Museum in Beirut, Lebanon
Mim Museum - Mineral Museum in Beirut, Lebanon
Mim is a private museum in Lebanon, located on the Saint-Joseph university campus in Beirut. More than 1400 minerals are exhibited there, representing more than 300 different species from over 60 countries.
Mr. Salim Edde has built up this collection since 1997. There you can discover pieces originating from a number of renowned collections --both old and more recent-- as well as from the major mining discoveries of their era. It is now considered to be one of the world's paramount private collections for the variety and quality of its minerals.
A didactic circuit, accompanied by screens showing films and scientific applications of mineralogy, will reveal a world of unsuspected marvels--priceless both from an aesthetic and scientific point of view.
When Salim Edde started building up his collection of minerals in 1997, he may or may have not known it would yield what is now considered one of the world's paramount private collections for its variety and quality. With more than 1600 minerals from over 65 countries on display, the collection at Mim museum is one not to be missed for all mineral and metal lovers...and non-lovers for that matter. Whether you work in the field, are a passionate enthusiast or are clueless about minerals or metals but appreciate beauty, this museum will not fail to leave you with a lasting impression. Prepare to get way more than you bargained for: pay the ridiculously low admission fee (comparable to that of the Lebanon National Museum) and step into a world of mind-boggling cultural wealth. The exhibits are divided into a main gallery and a treasure section; both heavily guarded by cordial but not-to-be-messed with security staff. Complete with digital educational tools, informative videos and displays, Mim offers a world-class museum experience.
The name of the museum comes from the twenty-fourth letter of the Arabic alphabet (Mim) and is the equivalent of the Latin letter M. It is also the first letter of the Arabic words for Museum, Mineral and Metal, which coincidentally is also the case in English and French. The goal of this permanent exhibit located within the campus of Universite Saint Joseph is to promote the historical, industrial, economic and aesthetic of mineralogy.
