SUMMARY
=======
The National Museum of Fine Arts (Maltese: Mużew Nazzjonali tal-Arti) was an art museum in Valletta, Malta. It housed a collection of works by Maltese and foreign artists mainly representing the major European artistic styles. The museum was inaugurated on 7 May 1974, and it was located at Admiralty House, an 18th-century palace which was formerly the official residence of the Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet. The museum was closed down on 2 October 2016, and there are plans to reopen it as MUŻA (from the Maltese acronym Mużew tal-Arti) at Auberge d'Italie in 2018.

THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, VALLETTA, MALTA
The National Museum of Fine Arts is located at the lower end of South street (Valletta) within an area including other fine historical palaces dating from the times of the Order of St John of Jerusalem.
Set in a complimenting historic building, the museum presents a multifaceted overview of art and artistic expression in Malta from the late medieval period to the contemporary. Highlights from the collection on display include paintings by leading local and internationally acclaimed artists, precious Maltese silverware, statuary in marble bronze and wood, fine furniture items and splendid maiolica pieces.
The building was originally one of the earliest to be built in Valletta and served as residence to successive knights of the Order of St John. It was later largely rebuilt during the 1760s by Fra Ramon de Sousa y Silva, a wealthy Portuguese knight of the Order of St John.
During the early nineteenth century the palace was home to Louis-Charles of Orleans, Comte de Beaujolais during his brief stay on the island followed shortly by his demise. By the 1820's the palace became known as Admiralty House and seat of the Commander-in Chief of the British Mediterranean Fleet. It also hosted high-ranking personalities both as residents and guests including Queen Elizabeth, Winston Churchill, and others.
The palace was officially inaugurated as the National Museum of Fine Arts in 1974 and has since then been Malta's most important museum for the arts.
A conspicuous number of works origionally belonged to the Order of the Knights of St John and come from the Magistral Palace, and various auberges in which the knights took up residence.

artMuse Exhibition
artMuse is an exhibition including the works created by a group of inmates at the Corradino Correctional Facility, Malta, as participants of a Community Art Project held together with Charmaine Zammit (educator of the project) during the summer of 2017.
The displayed works range from the participants’ art journals to drawings, comic-art and photography. The project did not aim at the production of aesthetically pleasing artworks but at providing a learning experience through art.
The exhibition is meant as a display of the learning process that the inmates went through while dealing with their own chosen themes including: human relations; graffiti street art; social connections; beliefs; justice and freedom; environmental issues and healing from drug addiction. These themes were developed with reference to the participants’ own selection of works from images of the collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts (now in transition to MUŻA) in Valletta.
Later on in the project, the participants had the opportunity to explore their selected themes through photography and comic art techniques in collaboration with local artists, Stephen Vella and Peter Magro. While developing the chosen theme, each participant has kept an art journal through which ideas could be explored, presented and discussed with others for further development of the themes.
The participants’ art journals form part of the exhibition and are displayed on a table to encourage the visitors to browse through and explore the participants’ documented risk-taking to explore and generate ideas and decision-making.
The artMuse project was implemented by the Maltese NGO Kopin (VO/0200), in collaboration with the Corradino Correctional Facility (Ministry for Home Affairs and National Security), and is financed with the support of the Creative Communities Fund of the Arts Council Malta.
