The museum offers a variety of fascinating exhibitions and one permanent display illustrating lavishly the story of Iceland’s past, from the medieval days of Viking settlements to current contemporary culture. The main exhibition has over 2,000 artefacts discovered in various parts of the country. In pride of place amongst the museum’s many treasures is the Valthjófsstadur door, featuring elaborate medieval engravings depicting scenes from the legendary 12th century knight’s tale Le Chevalier au Lion.

In 2004 the National Museum of Iceland stood at a crossroad. The museum reopened its doors after extensive refurbishment and a modernised museum now offers a wide variety of services to its guests. The museum holdes a new, dynamic exhibition that fulfil all the modern standards required of such an establishment, housing the nation´s treasures.
The role of the museum is to increase and relay knowledge of Icelandic cultural heritage, from the nation´s earliest settlement through to the modern day.
At the National Museum the present meets the past. It is healthy for the Icelandic people to ask who they are, where they are going and what they want to represent. What can they learn from past generations?
The National Museum displays objects that provide insight into Icelandic cultural history - displays that encourage visitors to dwell on the past, present and future. The National Museum was established on 24th of February 1863. Up until that time Icelandic museum pieces had been kept in Danish collections. Jón Árnason librarian was made curator of the Icelandic collection. Several months later he was given permission to hire another curator; Sigurður Guðmundsson 'the painter,' who was the first to advocate the establishment of an antiquarian collection in Iceland.
The museum was called the Antiquarian Collection up until 1911 when the name was changed to the National Museum of Iceland. During the first decades it was housed in several attics in Reykjavík - in the Cathedral, House of Corrections, Parliament and National Bank - and finally the attic of the National Library building on Hverfisgata (now the Culture House) where it remained for four decades. When the Republic was formed in 1944, Parliament decided to give the nation a museum at Suðurgata, into which the collections were moved in 1950. Six decades later it has been entirely refurbished to meet present standards and requirements.
The role of the National Museum is varied, reflecting its legal obligation as national centre for the preservation and management of cultural heritage, cultural reaearch programmes and promulgation of knowledge and information which relates to the cultural heritage of the nation.

Archaeological research has always played an important role in the work of the Museum. Until 2001, when the Archaeological Heritage Agency was formed, it also held the adminstrative responsiblity for archaeological sites in Iceland. All archaeological finds belong to the state, according to law, and are supposed to be delivered to the National Museum, for conservation and keeping.

A Fast Tour of Hallgrimskirkja Church and National Museum Reykjavik, Iceland

First day in Iceland, Reykjavik. We visited the church, Hallgrimskirkja, the Viking boat sculpture, Sun Voyager. We then visited the area at the Grotta island Lighthouse and took a walk at the golf club Seltjarnarnes. There was a sea urchin on the path. The sunset time lapse was taken from the hotel room, viewing over the regional airport of Reykjavik.

Hof, in Öræfi, is a cluster of farms in the municipality of Sveitarfélagið Hornafjörður in southeast Iceland, close to Vatnajökull glacier, and twenty two kilometres south of Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park. It is located on the Route 1 southwest of Höfn, in the narrow strip between the sea coast and the glacier.
A notаble building in Hof is a turf church, which was built in 1883 and is the youngest turf church in Iceland. Since 1951, it belongs to the National Museum of Iceland.

Pick up a telephone and chat with a medieval chieftain or try on some ancient armor and jewelry. The museum is a wonderful hands-on learning experience for all ages.Start with the main permanent exhibition, Making of A Nation, which illustrates Iceland’s challenging journey to nationhood. Divided into four sections, the first, Work and the Way of Life, details the resourcefulness and adaptability of Icelanders since settlement in 870. In the second section, learn about the settlement patterns of Iceland. The third section focuses on arts and crafts and the final section explores the social culture and language of Iceland.Trace Iceland’s political history from early domination by Christian chieftains to Norwegian rule, then Danish rule and finally sovereign statehood as the Republic of Iceland in 1944.Several artifacts are extremely popular, including a beautifully carved wooden door from the 12th century and the first Bible printed in Iceland in 1584. In addition to the permanent display, there are always several temporary exhibitions covering a wealth of subjects. Don’t miss the National Gallery of Photography on the ground floor, which is free of charge. The museum has a café and an excellent shop stocked with original gift items. Allow three to four hours to explore the museum in full.The National Museum of Iceland is a few minutes' walk from the city center and is accessible via several bus routes.
