Wexford Opera House - An Introduction
Wexford Opera House is Ireland's first ever fully specified, purpose built, opera house. A hub for theatre in the South East of Ireland, Wexford Opera House not only hosts the world renowned Wexford Festival Opera, but showcases some of the most popular national and international productions all year round.
An Introduction to Wexford Festival Opera
Treasure is found in the most unlikely places....
For sixty years now many hundreds of thousands of people have made a pilgrimage to Wexford Festival Opera in search of buried operatic treasure. Wexford is a charming seaside town on Ireland's southeast coast and since 1951 this town has hosted what has become known as one of the world's most remarkable festivals. Wexford Festival Opera prides itself in giving new life to unjustly neglected operas, introducing artists and audiences to the forgotten masterpieces. And it does this in high quality productions which annually delight both critics and audiences alike.
But far from being satisfied with presenting three productions each year, also on offer is a packed programme of morning events, lunchtime concerts, afternoon ShortWorks and recitals and late night revues. As if this wasn't enough, a vibrant Fringe Festival offers everything from art exhibitions through to singing and swinging pubs
And throughout all this, there is the remarkable camaraderie engendered by the warmth and intimacy of Wexford town itself. From the brand new Wexford Opera House seating just over 770, the 350 strong volunteer corps ready to welcome you to Wexford, to the hotels, bars and restaurants along the High, Main, and side streets of this Viking town, Wexford is a town which is truly taken over by the Festival. There's something in the air that quickens everyone's pulse -- a common heartbeat of expansive good feeling and heightened sensibility that brings people back to Wexford again and again.
The Wexford Festival Opera has been running since 1951, playing a central role in the cultural life of Ireland, in the world of Opera and Arts internationally.
From small and humble beginnings it has achieved world-wide success and critical acclaim by demonstrating passion, innovation and a willingness to lead audiences and artists into neglected territories to explore the rich vein of operatic work worldwide.
Dorilla in Tempe - Live from Wexford Festival Opera
Live from the National Opera House in Wexford - Wexford Festival Opera's production of 'Dorilla in Tempe' by Antonio Vivaldi.
This is the first Baroque opera to be performed at WFO in over 30 years, Dorilla in Tempe by Antonio Vivaldi. The score, includes a reworking of part of the ‘Spring’ movement from Vivaldi’s celebrated The Four Seasons. It tells the story of the obstacles faced to the blissful union of Dorilla (a princess) and Elmiro (a shepherd), whose rival Nomio turns out to be the disguised god Apollo. See more at:

@ Fusion National Opera House - Wexford, Ireland
“Into the Void began as a dialogue between artist Sonia Wickham and musician Corrado Maria De Santis. The ideas that grew out of this have deepened and developed over the course of a year into what has become an intense collaboration which fuses the work of both. Merging the construction of a visual work with guitar and electronic improvisation the performance flows in a thoroughly organic way.”

Savannah Wexford Choir Students June 2016
This short video documents the visit to County Wexford by the Savannah Children's Choir on 11th June 2016. The choir gave a public performance under the masts of the Dunbrody Famine Ship to celebrate the historic links between Wexford and Savannah. They were joined by the choir from Raheen National School who performed songs from their 1916 commemorative suite.
The historical links between Wexford and Savannah were explained those who gathered to enjoy the choirs’ performances by several undergraduate students from Georgia Southern University’s ‘Wexford-Savannah Axis’ research group.
After their performance in New Ross and having taken in a tour of the historic ship, the Savannah Children’s Choir then went on to enjoy a visit to the Irish National Heritage Park and the National Opera House, where they had the opportunity to sing with the world-famous Irish choral group, Anúna.
The Wexford-Savannah Axis research group were also welcomed to Wexford by Minister Paul Kehoe TD and Mr. Tom Enright (Chief Executive of Wexford County Council) at a civic reception in Wexford County Council buildings on 13th June 2016. At the reception, the students contributed to an exhibition curated by County Archivist Gráinne Doran which celebrates the growing links between County Wexford and Savannah, Georgia.
