The Viking age lasted roughly 300 years. From the first recorded raid on an English monastery on Lindisfarne in 793 A.D. to 1066, when Norway's greatest King Harald III (aged 50!) died in berzerkergang (fighting bare-chested without armor and shield with an axe in each hand) from an arrow to his skull in an attempt to conquer England. A few months later another Viking, today known as William the Conquerer (actually related to Harald III) succeeded in taking England.
The Vikings raided and fought all over Europe. Often in the service of Norwegian Kings or as mercenaries for other European rulers. The Roman Emperor had his own Viking army known as the Varangian guard in Constantinople.
It was whilst being the leader of the Varangian guard that Harald Hardråde (later called Harald III of Norway and founder of Oslo) eventually amassed such wealth that he was able to successfully court the 2nd oldest daughter of one of contemporary Europe's most powerful rulers: Yaroslav The Wise. They married and returned to Norway where they founded what is today the capital of Norway, Oslo.
So who was this last Viking Queen of Norway? That's the story I investigate whilst exploring Kiev, the city she grew up in, before ascending to the Norwegian throne.
Enjoy my movies? I ALSO RUN A PODCAST:
For more Viking history I highly recommend watching History channel's TV show; 'Vikings'. It's actually quite accurate in terms of the historical events they depict. Ragnar Lothbrok was indeed a Norwegian Viking King and Lagertha was a female warrior ruler. The woman who plays Lagertha in the TV show is actually a Canadian but with Ukrainian ancestry;
Here's a link to more info about the greatest Viking series ever made:
For more tangible Viking history if you for some reason find yourself in Norway's capital Oslo, a visit to see one of the few surviving Viking ships is a must. It's located at what's known as Vikingskipshuset on an island called Bygdoy. More information in English here:

MH17 Kyiv Requiem. A Year After
The Liatoshynskyi Classic Music Ensemble performers together with the Dutch conductor Jeroen Weierink commemorate victims of the Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 crash by performing Mozart's Requiem on a pipe organ today at the National Hall of Organ and Chamber Music of Ukraine in Kyiv.
Many officials are attending the ceremony, including ambassadors of Australia, Malaysia, Germany, USA, Estonia; OSCE, EU representatives and other international organisations. There are also Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, PM Arsenii Yatseniuk and other Ukrainian politicians. Still, most of the people are diplomats.
Kees Klompenhouwer, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Ukraine, started his speech in Ukrainian and spoke about crash victims from Australia, Belgium, Germany, Indonesia, New Zealand, Canada, USA. He thanked Ukrainian citizens for compassion and flowers Ukrainians brought to the Dutch Embassy today. He also commemorated Ukrainians that had lost their lives in the war.

Yevhen Stankovych -- 'Banya' from the ballet Rasputin
Hobart Earle conducts the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra, May 2013, in the National Philharmonic Hall of Ukraine ( city of Kyiv ) . Yevhen Stankovych was born in 1942 in the town of Svaliava in the foothills of the Carpathian mountains in the south west of Ukraine. His ballet Rasputin was originally staged in 1986 with the title Prometheus. The first staging of the ballet as Rasputin was in Skopje, Macedonia, in 1989. In the grotesque satire of the 'Banya' ( Bath House ) , pandemonium breaks loose in an orgiastic revelry, interrupted by raucous laughter, howls and distorted quotations of the Tsarist national anthem and Mephistopheles' song about the Golden Calf from Gounod's Faust.

The Canadian Bandurist Capella is a male bandurist chorus that combines the sounds of choral singing accompanied by instrumentalists playing the contemporary bandura.
The Capella was founded in June of 2001 by a group of likeminded individuals whose goal was to promote Ukrainian music and culture. The current ensemble consists of over 30 members. The Capella’s repertoire consists of Ukrainian folk songs, patriotic compositions, sacred music, as well as contemporary compositions.
Over its 15 year history, the Canadian Bandurist Capella has performed in venues across Ontario, Quebec,
Manitoba, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut. The capella has performed at various
festivals including the Canadian National Exhibition, Bloor West Village Toronto Ukrainian Festival and
the Canadian National Ukrainian Festival in Dauphin, Manitoba.
Our mission is to explore the full potential and versatility of the modern bandura within a male choral
ensemble, to bring together individuals who are committed to advancing choral bandura music while
respecting its rich history, and to promote and popularize the bandura within the Ukrainian community
and beyond.
Korinya (which means roots in English), is a young band from the Ukrainian diaspora that has been performing in the U.S. and Canada since 2005. Since then, Korinya has performed several times in Ukraine, and in 2012 won 1st place at the Boyko Festival. This young band presents Ukrainian folk music in a fresh, grassroots way. Hear the voices of the steppes, the cheerful melody of the sopilka, and the strong, soulful fiddle playing that tie this young band to their Ukrainian roots. Members include Sana Shepko (violin), Zoya Shepko (accordion), Alina Kuzma (vocals), Maria Pleshkevich (percussion), and Stefan Shepko (sopilka). Korinya recently released their recording, Zemlya, which is available in CD format as well as online on Spotify, iTunes, and CD Baby.
Ms. Solovianenko's operatic career spans over 10 years of solo performances and company appearances across the globe. An accomplished vocalist and frequent headliner in productions of Ukrainian opera companies, she has performed with the National Academic Choir of Ukraine and has served as a lead vocalist at the prestigious National Organ and Chamber Music Hall. In addition to her stage career, Ms Solovianenko has performed at over 20 international festivals and concert tours in the countries of Eastern and Western Europe, Canada, US, as well as concert tours in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Chile. In 2010 Ms. Solovianenko was awarded the title of “Merited Artist of Ukraine” - a high artistic honor bestowed upon a citizen for artistic contributions to the cultural fabric of the country. A resident of Toronto since 2014, Ms. Solovianenko continues to actively perform throughout Canada and Europe. Ms. Solovianenko's repertoire includes music ranging from baroque to classical, and modern, incorporating music of composers like Bach, Handel, Caccini, Pergolesi, Vivaldi, Puccini and Sartori among others.
