Historia:

Tikal is an ancient Mayan citadel in the rainforests of northern Guatemala. Possibly dating to the 1st century A.D., Tikal flourished between 200 and 850 A.D. and was later abandoned. Its iconic ruins of temples and palaces include the giant, ceremonial Lost World Pyramid and the Temple of the Grand Jaguar. At 70 meters, Temple IV is the tallest pre-Columbian structure in the Americas and offers sweeping views.

Guatemala City Travel Guide
Guatemala City Travel Guide: Guatemala City is located in the department (territorial division) of Guatemala, and it's the capital of the country. All the main highways start at Kilómetro 0, located inside Palacio Nacional de la Cultura (National Palace), in Centro Histórico (Historic Center).
Guatemala City became the capital after Antigua Guatemala had been destroyed by an earthquake in 1773. With a population of around 3 million people, Guatemala City is the largest and most modern city in Guatemala. It can be interesting to visit Guate, as it is also called by the locals. Guatemala City has attractions and restaurants, often with few tourists. Sunday evenings' gatherings of hundreds of locals at the main plaza is certainly an unforgettable experience.
It's this genuine and profound hospitality combined with the city's outstanding cultural legacy and astonishing natural beauty that makes Guatemala City such a compelling place for travellers.

GUATEMALA: GUATEMALANS BEGIN CELEBRATING PEACE
Spanish/Nat
After 36 years of civil war Guatemalans have begun celebrating peace.
Four rebel leaders have arrived in Guatemala City for the signing of a historic peace accord that will end Central America's last and longest civil war.
The fighting between the government and leftist guerrilla rebels has forced at least 100- thousand people to flee and has left over 140-thousand people dead.
Happy to put over three decades of war behind them, Guatemalans crowed into the main square outside the National Palace on Sunday.
On the patio of the National Palace at 5 p.m. local time (2300 GMT) rebels and President Alvaro Arzu will sign the last in a series of accords to end the conflict.
The peace accord has taken six years to craft and people are praying that it will work.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
For us as indigenous people, it is a special day to sign the peace because in the world there are many orphans and widows so we will sign the peace accord so we can all be free.
SUPER CAPTION: Guatemala City resident
President Alvaro Arzu has received worldwide acclaim for having ended the bitter civil war.
He struck a deal with the four rebel groups that joined in 1982 to create the U-R-N-G, or National Guatemalan Revolutionary Unity.
The Sunday ceremony will trigger earlier agreements including agriculture and economic reforms and the protection of human rights.
The government will also establish a truth commission to investigate war crimes, demobilise and disarm rebels, and review the future of the military.
For those wearied by over three decades of war, the peace accord offers new hope for a better life.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
It is a very happy thing that is being seen in Guatemala because of the signing of the peace accord which we all need.
SUPER CAPTION: Guatemala City resident
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
I hope everything that is talked about will be honored because in our country we are all poor and indigenous and we want to improve so we can enjoy something of the change that's being talked about.
SUPER CAPTION: Guatemala City resident
Among hundreds of foreign dignitaries and other special guests attending the signing of the peace accord, will be outgoing U-N Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.
Witnessing the signing will be among his last official acts in a tumultuous term.
It was the United Nations under Boutros-Boutros Ghali that pushed the warring government and guerrillas to the negotiating table six years ago.
The U-N has mediated the talks ever since.

Guatemala City, Guatemala, Central America, North America
Guatemala City, is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Guatemala, and the most populous in Central America. The city is located in the south-central area of the country and has a large number of green areas. In 2009, it had a formal population of 1,075,000, but the metropolitan population is believed to be at least 2.3 million. Guatemala City is also the capital city of the local Municipio de Guatemala, and Guatemala Department.
The city is located at 14°38′N 90°33′W, in a mountain valley called Valle de la Ermita in the south central part of the country Guatemala. Guatemala City is the economic, governmental, and cultural capital of the Republic. The city also functions as the main port of entry into the country, with international airport, La Aurora International Airport and most major highways in the country originating or leading to the city. The city continues to be a pole for the attraction of immigrants from the country's rural areas as well as foreign immigrants. In addition to a wide variety of restaurants, hotels, shops, and a modern BRT transport system (Transmetro), the city has a wide variety of art galleries, theaters, sports venues and museums (including some fine collections of Pre-Columbian art) and continually offers an increasing amount of cultural activities. Guatemala City offers all the modern amenities along with important historic sites that a world class city can be expected to have ranging from an IMAX Theater to the Ícaro film festival (Festival Ícaro) featuring films produced in Guatemala and Central America. Despite its location in the tropics and the many micro climates found within the country, Guatemala City's elevation and the resulting moderating influence of the higher altitude enable it to enjoy a subtropical highland climate (Köppen Cwb), though depending on location, it also borders on a tropical savanna climate (Köppen Aw). Guatemala City is generally mild, almost springlike, throughout the course of the year. It occasionally gets warm during the dry season, but not as hot as other sea-level cities located in the tropics. The hottest month is April. The rainy season extends from May to October while the dry season covers the remainder of the year. The city is also very windy, which may decrease the apparent temperature. The average annual temperature ranges from 22 to 28 °C (72 to 82 °F) during the day, and 12 to 17 °C (54 to 63 °F) at night. Guatemala City is subdivided into 22 zones designed by the urban engineering of Raúl Aguilar Batres, each one with its own streets and avenues, making it pretty easy to find addresses in the city. Zones are numbered 1-25 with Zones 20, 22 and 23 not existing as they would have fallen in two other municipalities territory. Addresses are assigned according to the street or avenue number, followed by a dash and the number of meters it is away from the intersection further simplifying address location. The zones are assigned in a spiral form starting in downtown Guatemala city. The city's metro area has recently grown very rapidly and has absorbed most of the neighboring municipalities of Villa Nueva, San Miguel Petapa, Mixco, San Juan Sacatepequez, San José Pinula, Santa Catarina Pinula, Fraijanes, San Pedro Ayampuc, Amatitlán, Villa Canales, Palencia and Chinautla forming what is now known as the Guatemala City Metropolitan Area. Zone One is the Historic Center, (Centro Histórico), lying in the very heart of the city, the location of many important historic buildings including the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura (National Palace of Culture), the Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Congress, the Casa Presidencial (Presidential House), the National Library and Plaza de la Constitución (Constitution Plaza, old Central Park). Efforts to revitalize this important part of the city have been undertaken by the municipal government and have been very successful thus far. In an attempt to control rapid growth of the city, the municipal government (Municipalidad de Guatemala) headed by longtime Mayor Álvaro Arzú, has implemented a plan to control its growth based on transects along its important arterial roads and exhibitting Transit-oriented development (TOD) characteristics. This plan denominated POT (Plan de Ordenamiento Territorial) aims to allow taller building structures of mixed uses to be built next to large arterial roads and gradually decline in height and density as you move away from such. It is also worth mentioning, that due to the Airport being in the city, to the south, many Aeronautic Height Limits have been applied to the construction code. This limits the maximum height for a building, at 60 Meters in Zone 10, up to 95 Meters in Zone 1. The city is located in the South-Central area of the country and has a lot of green areas. The city offers a portfolio of entertainment in the region, focused on the so-called Zona Viva and the Calzada Roosevelt as well as four degrees North.

GUATEMALA: PALACE BUILT FOR MAYAN PRINCESS DISCOVERED
Spanish/Nat
XFA
Archaeologists working in the Guatemalan jungle have uncovered the ruins of a giant palace built to honour a Mayan princess.
The palace was discovered on the banks of the Pasion River near the town of El Zapote on the southern edge of Guatemalas Peten province.
It was called Cancuén in its heyday 12-hundred years ago, which is an Indian word that means The Place of the Snakes.
It covers about 26-thousand square yards and contains more than 170 rooms.
Some of the rooms are nearly 25 feet tall.
The palace was built to honour a Mayan princess whose marriage to a powerful lawlord bolstered the security of her city-state.
Some archaeologists believe this is an important find which could rival the great ruined Mayan palaces in Tikal, 80 miles northeast.
Earlier in the year, a different team of archaeologists found the ruins of a city they dubbed El Pajaral.
That city appears to have been a major religious site, which attracted pilgrims from all over the Mayan world during the Eighth Century.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
I believe Doctor Demarest is right, I think his exploration is appropriate and that it is worthwhile carrying out these works because we are in the presence of something new in the field of what we know about the lower Mayan lands.
SUPER CAPTION: Francis Polo Cifontes, Anthropology and History Institute
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
The architecture of the place is impressive. There are vaults as high as 7 metres, many many rooms and chambers. Up to now there are more than 80 rooms - with different levels, closed squares, main squares... the architecture of the palace is very interesting, and the quality of the architecture is also impressive.
SUPER CAPTION: Lucia Moran Yiraka, Archeology student
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
The seam of archeology in Guatemala, far from being exhausted, is opening up more and more with new projects, new perspectives, and that is great for the country, because at this time, apart from the cultural angle, we can add a cultural tourism angle.
