Panteon Nacional, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Panteon Nacional
What is today the Panteon Nacional or National Mausoleum, was the last building constructed by the Spaniards in Santo Domingo. Built between 1714 and 1748, it originally served as a church consisting of a central nave and two lateral chapels.
Here the Jesuit Fathers gave mass with their backs turned to the congregation. They turned their backs to the congregation so that Jesus Christ would be in front of them and in this way all would face Jesus. The organ was in the back and the chorus sang from the balconies above.
Next to the Jesuit Church on the Calle de las Damas was a small plaza known as the Plazoleta de Maria de Toledo, which was used by the priests to talk and to pass the time before giving mass.
When the Jesuits were expelled for having allied themselves politically, the building passed through a succession of uses. It was used as a warehouse for tobacco, a theatre, a school and as headquarters for various governmental institutions.
In 1955, during the reign of the dictator, Trujillo, it was restored and declared the Panteon Nacional, a cemetery for national heroes. The chandelier that hangs from the ceiling is made of bronze and was a gift from General Francisco Franco the dictator of Spain to Trujillo.
Under the chandelier is the eternal flame that burns 24 hours a day.
Only one foreigner is interred in the Panteon Nacional, Eugenio Maria de Hostos, who fought for Puerto Rican independence without obtaining it and it was his dying wish to be buried in an independent nation.
In the Dominican Republic, he founded the first school for teachers.
On the ceiling of the Panteon Nacional is a mural by the Spanish artist, Rafael Pellicer, called Ascensión a los Cielos (Ascension to Heaven) and El Juicio Final (The final Judgment.)
Other heroes interred in the Panteon Nacional include, Concepcion Bona, the designer of the Dominican flag, Americo Lugo, the great Dominican historian, General Pedro Santana, our first constitutional president, the Admirals Juan Bautista Canbiaso and Juan Alejandro Acosta, founders of the Dominican Navy and Emilio Prud'homme and José Reyés who wrote the words and music for the Dominican National Anthem.
The 36 tombs that do not bear names are for future heroes and the one with no marking is for the Unknown Soldier.
At the entrance to the Panteon Nacional, an Honor Guard stands at attention remaining absolutely still.
The flags of the various branches of the Dominican Armed Forces fly within the Panteon Nacional: the Army, Navy, Air Force and National Police.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
ightseeing and shopping top the agenda on this day out and with limited numbers you’ll get a more personal feel on this TUI exclusive trip. First stop is at La Romana where you’ll stop for a light breakfast, and then it’s on to see all the highlights of Santo Domingo. Here the timeline dates back to the middle of the 15th century when the Spanish settled here, making it one of the oldest cities in the Americas. And to ensure you get the best out of your day, you’ll have headphones to hear all the information from your personal guide. This part of the city is home to the first cathedral built in the New World and the Alcazar de Colon, which was once the home of Christopher Columbus’ son. After a spot of sightseeing by coach and on foot, hop on board the Chu Chu Train for a tour of the colonial zone. When you’ve worked your way through a guidebook’s worth of sights, there’ll be time for lunch, a visit to the National Pantheon, and shopping for jewellery, textiles and souvenirs on the Calle El Conde.
Santo Domingo Travel Guide - Dominican Republic wonderful Memories
Santo Domingo Travel Guide - Dominican Republic wonderful Memories
Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic and the oldest European city in the Americas. The old city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Santo Domingo is the capital city of the Dominican Republic, and it prides itself in being the first European city in the New World. Founded by Christopher Columbus's brother Bartolome Colombus in 1496, it is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas and was the first seat of the Spanish colonial empire in the New World. For this reason, the city of Santo Domingo has a really rich historic and cultural heritage that makes any visit extremely worthwhile. Nowadays, it remains one of the most populous cities in the Central America-Caribbean area, and the main economic and commercial center of this region. The city is divided into two parts by the Ozama River. The western side is very developed economically, while the eastern part, known as Santo Domingo Este, has historically lagged behind.
The most important tourist destination of the city is the Zona Colonial or Colonial Zone, on the western bank of the river and facing the Caribbean Sea. To the west of the Zona Colonial lies Gazcue, one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, filled with old Victorian houses and tree-lined streets. The city's waterfront George Washington Avenue, knows as El Malecon, borders the Caribbean Sea and attracts many tourists because of its hotels, casinos, palm-lined boulevards and monuments. Surrounding the Gazcue area you will find the Palacio Nacional (seat of the Dominican government), the National Theater, the Museums in the Plaza de la Cultura, and the Palace of Fine Arts.
In the central part of western Santo Domingo lies the economic and commercial heart of the city, in an area known as the Poligono Central and delimited by the 27 de Febrero, John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill and Maximo Gomez avenues. This high-income area remains rather unexplored by tourists, despite offering most of the best dining and shopping available in the city. Many of the city's most affluent neighborhoods surround the city's two main parks, the Parque Mirador Sur in the South and the Jardin Botanico in the North.
In the less developed Oriental Santo Domingo you will find other major monuments and tourist spots, such as Columbus's Lighthouse, where the explorer's remains are buried, the open caves of the Parque Nacional Los Tres Ojos, and the National Aquarium. This all makes of Santo Domingo a cosmopolitan, vibrant and bustling city with very distinct neighborhoods and ambiances, all worth a visit, and providing the most diverse cultural experiences.
Santo Domingo was, until recently, a huge city (pop. nearly 4 million people) that was split into 5 independent municipalities: Distrito Nacional, Santo Domingo Este, Santo Domingo Oeste, Santo Domingo Norte and Boca Chica. Fortunately, nearly all tourist attractions and shopping, dining and entertainment venues are located relatively close to each other in the Distrito Nacional, making it easy for you to get around and see the sights.
