National Park American Samoa
The National Park of American Samoa is a national park in the United States territory of American Samoa, distributed across three islands: Tutuila, Ofu, and Ta‘ū.
The park preserves and protects coral reefs, tropical rainforests, fruit bats, and the Samoan culture.
Popular activities include hiking and snorkeling.
Of the park's 13,500 acres , 9,000 acres is land and 4,500 acres is coral reefs and ocean.
The park is the only American National Park Service system unit south of the equator.
Congressman Fofó Iosefa Fiti Sunia introduced a bill in 1984, at the request from Bat Preservers Association and Dr. Paul Cox, to include American Samoa to the Federal Fish and Wildlife Restoration Act.
The purpose of the bill was to protect the habitat for the Flying fox as well as to protect the old rainforest.
The bill marked the beginning of American Samoa's entry into the U.S.
National Park System.
The National Park Service began the work of establishing the national park in July 1987
The National Park of American Samoa was established on October 31, 1988 by Public Law 100-571 but the NPS could not buy the land because of traditional communal land system.
This was resolved on September 9, 1993, when the National Park Service entered into a 50-year lease for the park land from the Samoan village councils.
In 2002, Congress approved a thirty percent expansion on Olosega and Ofu islands
In 2009 an earthquake and tsunami produced several large waves, resulting in 34 confirmed deaths, more than a hundred injuries and the destruction of about 200 homes and businesses.
The park encountered major damage.
The visitor center and main office were destroyed but there was only one reported injury among the NPS staff and volunteers.
The Tutuila unit of the park is on the north end of the island near Pago Pago.
It is separated by Mount Alava and the Maugaloa Ridge and includes the Amalau Valley, Craggy Point, Tāfeu Cove, and the islands of Pola and Manofā.
It is the only part of the park accessible by car and attracts the vast majority of visitors to the area.
The park lands include a trail to the top of Mount Alava and historic World War II gun emplacement sites at Breakers Point and Blunt's Point.
The trail runs along the ridge in dense forest, north of which the land slopes steeply away to the ocean.
Ofu island is only accessible via small fisherman boats from Ta'u island.
Accommodations are available on Ofu.
Ta‘ū island can be reached by a flight from Tutuila to Fiti‘uta village on Ta‘ū.
Accommodations are available on Ta‘ū.
A trail runs from Saua around Si’u Point to the southern coastline and stairs to the 3,170-foot summit of Lata Mountain.
Because of its remote location, diversity among the terrestrial species is low.
Approximately 30% of the plants and one bird species are endemic to the archipelago.
Three species of bat are the only native mammals: two large fruit bats and a small insectivore, the Pacific sheath-tailed bat.
They serve an important role in pollinating the island's plants.
The sheath-tailed bat was nearly eliminated by Cyclone Val in 1991.
Native reptiles include the pelagic gecko, Polynesian gecko, mourning gecko, stump-toed gecko, Pacific boa and seven skink species.
A major role for the park is to control and eradicate invasive plant and animal species such as feral pigs, which threaten the park's ecosystem.
There are several bird species, the most predominant being the wattled honeyeater, Samoan starling, and Pacific pigeon.
Other unusual birds include the Tahiti petrel, the spotless crake, and the rare many-colored fruit dove.
Pago Pago, American Samoa | Spending the day with a local
Pago Pago (pronounced Pango Pango) was such a fun and informative day thanks to Rory West and Northshore Tours. He is a local that enjoys showing tourists this beautiful island. We spent 7-8 hours driving all over and seeing more of the island than expected. He bought fruit and coconuts for the trip, and also picked some fresh fruit from the trees around his house. We stopped by his house, which was the highlight of the trip for me.

Tisa's Barefoot Bar is also in Alega, which is a bar that also operates a fale sleeping four on Alega Beach. The beach has a secluded character and is removed from the village. Bus services are frequent between Alega and Pago Pago.

American Samoa Time Lapse Tourists
I saw very, very few tourists when I was in American Samoa. There are a few cruise lines that stop in the territory and often not for very long. I saw mostly British and Australians. The few Americans I saw were near the cruise ship dock and in the National Park of American Samoa Visitor Center.
This video captured the beautiful Alega Beach and few Australians who stopped for a few hours at Tisa's Barefoot Bar. I shot the video from the balcony of my fale where I was staying.
Samoa islands tsunami kills at least 82
8.0-magnitude earthquake triggers village-flattening waves in South Pacific
updated 2 hours, 12 minutes ago
PAGO PAGO, American Samoa - A powerful Pacific Ocean earthquake spawned towering tsunami waves that swept ashore on Samoa and American Samoa early Tuesday, flattening villages, killing at least 82 people and leaving dozens of workers missing at devastated National Park Service facilities.
Cars and people were swept out to sea by the fast-churning water as survivors fled to high ground, where they remained huddled hours later. Signs of devastation were everywhere, with a giant boat getting washed ashore and coming to rest on the edge of a highway and floodwaters swallowing up cars and homes.
Samoan police commissioner Lilo Maiava told The Associated Press that police had confirmed 63 deaths, and officials were still searching the devastated areas, so the number of deaths was likely to rise soon.
At least 19 people also were killed in American Samoa.
American Samoa Gov. Togiola Tulafono said at least 50 were injured, in addition to the deaths.
Hampered by power and communications outages, officials struggled to assess the casualties and damage. But the death toll seemed sure to rise, with dead bodies already piling up at a hospital in Samoa.
The quake, with a magnitude between 8.0 and 8.3, struck around dawn about 20 miles below the ocean floor, 120 miles from American Samoa, a U.S. territory that is home to 65,000 people. The country of Samoa is to the west of American Samoa.
Late Tuesday, President Obama declared a major disaster in American Samoa. The declaration provides federal aid to supplement local recovery efforts.
National park damaged
The territory is home to a U.S. national park that appeared to be especially hard-hit. Holly Bundock, spokeswoman for the National Park Service's Pacific West Region in Oakland, Calif., said the superintendent of the park and another staffers had been able to locate only a fifth of the park's 13 to 15 employees and 30 to 50 volunteers.
Mike Reynolds, superintendent of the National Park of American Samoa, was quoted as saying four tsunami waves 15 to 20 feet high roared ashore soon afterward, reaching up to a mile inland. Holly Bundock, spokeswoman for the National Park Service's Pacific West Region in Oakland, Calif., said Reynolds spoke to officials from under a coconut tree uphill from Pago Pago Harbor and reported that the park's visitor center and offices appeared to have been destroyed.
