SE2 - 15, El Este National Park, Dominican Republic
Season 2, Episode 15 … After the weather window closed in on us, we decided to delay our passage to Samana on the Northern Coast. So we had a chance to explore the Southern Coast of the DR for a couple more days. We anchored just off of El Este National Park and explored the area by dingy and enjoyed our time there playing in the crystal clear waters of this National Park.
It's times like this that we are glad that we are not on a time frame or have any final destination in mind. We did not set out on this life style to sail around the world or only go for a year or two. When we left, in October 2015, we said we were going to sail as long as we were having fun. We didn't want to stress ourselves out with time frames or destinations.... This was a place we would have never stayed if we were on a timeframe, we would have continued North to Samana under not so comfortable (not unsafe, just uncomfortable) weather conditions to stay on schedule.

Cavern Scuba Diving in Bayahibe (The Dominican Republic) December 3rd
Take a break from the ocean with a fresh water cavern dive in the National park of the east.
Along the trail you can see interesting specimens of flora and fauna, its high cactus and many species of birds that live and nest there (among these, the Owl Face Ash, endemic to Hispaniola).
At the Cave of Chicho the water forms a small lake of fresh and clear water where we prepare and start our dive. For divers this pond is the gateway to a world of cavern galleries filled with stalactites and stalagmites, in which significant deposits of paleontological and archaeological remains were found.
ISLA SAONA AERIAL VIEWS 2017 | #7d7nTravel DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Saona Island (Spanish: Isla Saona) is a tropical island located a short distance from the mainland on the south-east tip of the Dominican Republic. It is a government protected nature reserve and is part of East National Park (Spanish: Parque Nacional del Este). It is a popular destination for tourists from all over the Dominican Republic, who arrive in fleets of catamarans and small motorboats on organized excursions every day. The Island is famous for the natural beauty of its beaches, and has been used on many occasions by film-makers and advertisers looking for a stereotypical desert island setting for their film or product.

St George Wreck is one of the most beautiful wrecks in the Caribbean. Built in 1962 in Scotland, the 80m long ship was used as a freighter to transport grain and flour between Norway and America. After 20 years of service the ship ended up in the port of Santo Domingo and in 1999 was sunk some 800m from the Viva Resort in Dominicus. The original name was different, but before sinking it, they named the wreck St George after the hurricane George, that hit the Caribbean the year before, in1998. Many beautiful corals has grown on the wreck over the years and schools of fish are a common site. The maximum depth is 44m on the St George.
The Atlantic Princess is the newest wreck for divers to enjoy in the Bayahibe area, found just in front of Dreams La Romana resort. It is an old passenger liner 9m high and 30m long that was sunk in May 2009. It is a great wreck even for new divers and the maximum depth is 12m. But because of the shallow depth, the Atlantic Princess has been damaged by storms in the past few years, destroying the top of the wreck completely. The wavy seas during the hurricane season 2016 made the wreck even more unsafe to penetrate, lots of parts are loose and dangerous for divers to go in. It is still a great dive to see the wreck from the outside, also the reef around is very interesting with plenty of fish, nudibranch, blenny, seahorses and other marine species.

04:07 Isla Saona
Isla Saona is situated in the Cotunamabá Natural Park, in the east of the Dominican Republic with Bayahibe being the point of departure for excursions organised to Isla Saona. With turquoise waters, white sands, and palm trees which sway in the gentle sea breeze, you will find kilometre long beaches which will allow you to take a refreshing swim and soak in the sun. Also, you have the Cotubanamá cave, which show the presence of Taino culture on this island. Isla Saona was named by Christopher Columbus in May 1494 during his second voyage to the Americas. The name honors Michele da Cuneo from Savona in Italy, who was a friend of Colombus.

Inland Blue Hole Adventure March 31 2015
Inland Blue Hole Adventure
6 hours in duration
1. Lucayan National Park
Here we visit a park filled with very interesting history. 6 ecosystems, 2 inland blue holes and interesting animal life and vegetation. Your guide walks you through at leisure introducing this wonderful destination. One of your ecosystems happens to be a beautiful beach. Beaches are best to be viewed at low tide. Tidal changes takes place every 6 hours alternating between highs and lows, this simply means that there is no guarantee if your beach visit would be at low tide. Extend your experience by snorkeling inside Gold Rock Creek. This eco-system is known as Mangrove-swash-land. Here we will find a marine blue hole that connects to the cave system of Lucayan National Park. Snorkel through a winding ecosystem of water and trees. Marine life includes a variety of fish from snappers, jacks, parrot fish, eels, yellow-fin mojarra and many more. Visibility is limited due to tidal changes.
2. Owl's Hole
This is an impressive hole. 30' in diameter, 30' foot drop to the body of water inside the hole. The water is fresh-water down to 30 odd feet in depth. In its center lies a pyramid of rocks. A ladder drops down into the hole and into the water resting on top of the rocks which is 20 odd feet below the water's surface. However the rocks extent down to 60' in depth. Marine life includes shrimps, sleeper gobbies and fresh water eels. The hole was formed by influence of ice ages. To get to this amazing destination includes an off road driving through a track road surrounded by local pine and palm trees. Here you are provided with snorkel equipment, climb down the ladder and experience history.
3. Banana Bay
This destination is the final stop of the day. It is a beach-side restaurant that would take your breath away. Here you have lunch facing a turquoise sea from a wooden deck. The restaurant amenities include hammocks, lounge chairs, outside shower and shade provided by Coconut palm trees. This stop is not just to take in its beauty and eat...this is also for complete relaxation.

Backpacking Dominican Republic: EP2 - ISLA SAONA
We took a day trip in Isla Saona which lies off the southeastern tip of the Dominican Republic. Part of the East National Park, with beautiful mangroves and coral reefs and palm-fringed beaches. We also visited a natural pool or what they call La Piscina Natural, which is home for lots of starfish.
