In remembrance of Xu Xiujuan, China's first environmental martyr, her story below
Every year red-crowned cranes, an endangered bird, migrate to the wetlands of Yancheng National Rare Bird Reserve in Yancheng City in east China’s Jiangsu Province in December. The reserve, a haven for the rare birds, also has a graveyard of China’s first environmental martyr Xu Xiujuan, who is also known as the “red-crowned crane girl.”

Ecotourism gaining popularity in China
Yancheng wetland is one of the popular eco-tourism attractions in Jiangsu.
During the week-long National Day Holiday, the rare bird nature reserve drew tens of thousands of tourists, with its fresh air, vast open ground, and red-crowned cranes.
With mild temperature and abundant rainfall, the area is an ideal place for the cranes to spend the winter.
SOUNDBITE(CHINESE)YAN HAN, Tourist
I'm delighted with the beautiful natural scenery and the fresh air. Not many people here, so I can spend a relaxing holiday.
The wetland is the first coastal wetland nature reserve in China.
It was established to protect rare birds such as red-crowned cranes since the 1980s.
Live: Who will be the next deer king?鹿王争霸赛
In June, the mating calls of stags start to echo in the Yellow Sea wetlands. Milu deer, also named Père David’s deer, is native to China. Unlike other deer that dwell in forests, milu deer inhabit the marshland area. This legendary animal once went extinct in its homeland and was successfully re-introduced in the 1980s. Now, China is the only place where wild milu deer live and breed. The Dafeng Milu Deer National Nature Reserve in Yancheng City, east China’s Jiangsu Province is home to the largest group of wild milu deer in the world, with a number of around 1000. In this livestreaming, we are going to see the milu deer living in the wild for the first time and how the stags fight for the role of deer king.

Paradise of birds: China's Qiangtang Nature Reserve
China's Qiangtang Nature Reserve is located in the Tibetan Plateau with an altitude of 4,500 meters. The high altitude and fickle weather make the area unfit for humans to live in, but it is a vibrant paradise for various kinds of birds.

Milu Deer Mating Season Takes Place in Nature Reserve in East China
The mating season of the Elaphurus deer (or Milu deer in Chinese) has begun in Yancheng Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserve of east China's Jiangsu Province, with many young males challenging each other in an attempts to win a mate.
The Milu deer nature reserve, which was approved as one of China's top scenic spots last year, is home to 3,223 Milu deer, half of the world's total population of Milu deer.
Male Milu deer are well known for using their antlers as a weapon to beat back their rivals.
A pair of male Milu deer would first stand face to face from a distance and then begin to charge towards each other and fight using their strength and antlers.
The winner will secure the right to choose a good mate whilst the loser will leave the herd. More on:

Thirty Endangered Père David's Deer Released into Wild in East China
Thirty endangered Père David's deer, also known as milu in China, were released into the wild on Sunday in the city of Yancheng, east China's Jiangsu Province.
It is the fifth time for the Dafeng Milu National Natural Reserve to send Père David's deer, an animal under the highest level of protection in China, back in to the wild. The reserve said they have released a total of 83 Père David's deer since 1998 and has helped the number of wild Père David's deer increase to 295.
To help the species survive in the wild, the Père David's deer consisted of 14 females and 16 males. Researchers also installed GPS devices on ten of them to track their movements.
We send them back to the wild to improve their genes and vitality of existing wild species; on the other hand, we can also intensify our research efforts by using GPS to track them, said Sun Daming, head of Administration Department of the Dafeng Milu National Natural Reserve.
Officials said they hope the release of these animals into the wild can help them better adapt to the natural environment.
Having been raised in captivity, the meaning of this release of Père David's deer is to help them survive in the wild; helping them to reproduce and form wild species, said Zhang Dehui from the State Forestry Administration of China.
The deer became extinct in China at the turn of the 20th century and it wasn't until 1985 that 22 of them returned from Britain. More on:
