CONOCIENDO NICARAGUA - Reserva El Tisey (San Nicolás, Estelí)
En esta ocasión nos aventuramos a un lugar bastante alto, pero que a la vez nos deja contemplar la belleza de varios puntos del país.
Salto La Estanzuela, Reserva Natural El TIsey, Estelí
Salto de La Estanzuela - Esteli, Nicaragua
From Esteli we took the bus to the hospital. From there, there is an unidentified dirt path on the right side of the road between the two pulperias. You follow that until you reach El Tisey Natural Reserve where there will be signs directing you to Salto de La Estanzuela. This hike takes over an hour to reach the waterfall, where the water is refreshingly cold. Groups of Nicaraguans barbecue in between rocks and swim, several foreigners wander in as well.

Tisey Estanzuela Natural Reserve Nicaragua is a great chance to reconnect with family
Tisey Estanzuela Natural Reserve Nicaragua is a great chance to reconnect with family in a rustic, simple
The mountain rainforest with its plentiful flora and fauna, plus the everyday peasant life and cultural represented on handicrafts, food and more, make up the set of attractions of Tisey Natural Reserve - The Estanzuela, which has an area of 9,344 hectares of land (more than 13 thousand acres, or 93 square miles). It is located in the north of the country, divided between the municipalities of San Nicolás, Estelí and El Sauce.Today, the options for nature tourism and rural tourism connect the reserve with local and foreign tourists who come to visit. Some of its most famous visitors have experienced overcrowded from years ago, especially in the holiday season of Nicaragua. But the offer is diversifying and increasingly organized. Birdwatching, hiking, abseiling and community activities are prominent interactions. The reserve is composed of vast areas of crops, livestock and several areas of protected forest areas where the pine and robledares stand. Here are several mountains, rivers and ravines. The name of the reserve actually comes from two of its most prominent natural sites: Cerro El Tisey which has 1,550 meters, and the river La Estanzuela which has a large and very well-known waterfall under the same name.In the reserve there are several rural communities and private agroproductive farms. One of the most picturesque farms is the community reserve of La Garnacha, where there are options for lodging, food, purchase of farm products and crafts of various kinds. Another service they offer is to visit surrounding natural points, like the hill Apaguajil, caves and sweeping panoramic viewpoints.Nearby, the restaurant Rancho Don Luis offers an excellent menu and a great view of the volcanic mountain range of The Maribios. The Estanzuela the leap is actually the most famous place in the reserve. It is a waterfall of 35 feet high, whose rocky wall are covered by beautiful wetland vegetation. Although it has been attacked pollution due to the massive influx of tourists in the summer, and especially to poor infrastructure and care of the authorities, the waterfall is always an iconic site here.

Directions to meet the man himself:
Getting there is a bit complicated. To visit Alberto Gutierrez, take a bus or taxi to the Tisey Estanzuela Natural Reserve. Ask to be dropped off at the the entrance to El Calejate or Eco Posada. If you are dropped off at Eco Posada (where you can get lunch/buy drinks, etc), keep walking up the road and eventually, you'll come to a big clearing on your left with a well worn road going slightly down the hill. There will be a sign that says El Calejate. Go down this path, admire the stunning view, and then veer left down the footpath down the hill. Keep walking and you will see a sign that says Beienvenidos a Galeria Esculturas en Piedras. Cross the wooden gate and start calling out. Alberto will come out to greet you.
Double check the directions with the hotel/hostel you are staying at and if you get lost along the way, all the locals in the area know Alberto and can point you in the right direction!

OUR BLOG:
PALACAGUINA, NICARAGUA.
Welcome to my vlog! We are sharing with you our trip from the U.S. to PALACAGUINA, NICARAGUA. We are moving our family to Central America to open a school. The work of our mission is to bring education to children that would not otherwise receive education. We are currently building the school and we would love your prayers and involvement if you so choose. Currently we are in Austin, Texas and preparing to sell our possessions and move our family down to Nicaragua at the end of this year. This vlog will share with you what goes on in the day of the life of such a journey. Please subscribe and follow us!
About our School:
Palacaguina Christian Academy! PCA was formed as an extension of Managua Christian Academy in Managua, Nicaragua. MCA is a school that has been meeting the needs of students in Managua since 2005. MCA is considered one of the top private schools in Managua with an excellent reputation hard earned by a dedicated and experienced staff. When Henry, the founder of MCA, was asked to expand his school into Palacaguina he was amazed (to say the least), as not many private schools are given permission to expand. Through working with the local government and because of MCA’s excellent reputation, Palacaguina Christian Academy was granted permission to open in February of 2017.
PCA is a bilingual christian school nestled in a small, green mountainside, on the NE side of Palacaguina, Nicaragua. PCA’s initial goal upon the school’s opening in February 2017 is to educate children from pre-k to kindergarten with a planned expansion, adding a grade level every year until PCA becomes a fully operating pre-school, primary school and secondary school for the students of Palacaguina. PCA will also provide space for community events, bible studies, college classes and a library that not only students will use, but will be available to the community at large as the only library in town. PCA is a community supported and needed unique school within the region because of its bilingual status and will serve as a launching point for students providing access to a bright future.
Nicaragua, Estelí to Tisey by Truck
In Nicaragua if you have a truck you have a 20 person vehicle. If you have a truck in Nicaragua you pick up passengers. If you ride in the back you hold on. If you ride in the back sunburn happens so wear sunscreen. There are bars all around the back of the truck we were in as well as a roll bar affair where we could hold on and stand up.

Entry from: Tisay, Esteli, Nicaragua
Entry Title: Tisey
Entry:
Last week I found myself with a persistent sore throat that seemed to get worse with each preceding hour until the next morning I awoke unable to swallow without severe pain and a slowly rising fever. I consulted my mamacita here, Dona Senovia who fed me, made me drink lemon water, something for my fever and I went back to bed. It wasn't until the following day I decided to go to the Health Center; despite all the horror stories I'd heard from other volunteers I was willing to take the chance because Managua and the PC Medical Office seemed just too far away. They diagnosed me with a throat infection and antibiotics were prescribed. Immediately, I was feeling better, but because they didn't give me enough - it came back. So, that's when I decided to call the PC Med office. I was put back on antibiotics but the full dose and course. I'm feeling 100% now, but when you're sick and in bed for various days' optimism goes out the window and dreams of home are all you can think about. Thus, the days following, my morale was really low and I needed something to change my negative state-of-mind. So, on Saturday night at about 7:00 o'clock I said to Maye, who was sitting next to me, You want to go to Tisay tomorrow, I'm inviting you, let's just go tomorrow and we'll stay the night. Maye, my super terrific friend said, Really? Okay, let's go! Tisey was just what Doctor Aimee ordered. Tisey is a Nature Reserve located only 40 minutes from San Isidro. I had heard wonderful things about the place from other volunteers, but nothing prepared me for how much Maye and I enjoyed it. Located in the heart of the Reserve is a Nicaraguan family owned and operated posada (bed & breakfast) that offers very affordable Nicaraguan meals and lodging. Even though the posada is located only 40 minutes away, the temperature change is drastic. I went from profuse sweating to needing a long sleeve shirt and from sleeping with a thin sheet to needing two heavy comforters. That alone was bliss! The first day we just relaxed and walked around the posada checking out the mirador (look out point.) Over dinner, we pondered such light conversation such as: where we came from, apes or the Genesis story before getting to bed early. The next day we awoke early and headed a little bit up the road to a very small, but organized community called Garnacha. A Spanish NGO has been working with this town to establish eco-tourism and a gourmet cheese factory. Yes, you heard me right - a CHEESE FACTORY! Good bye negativism, hello happiness! We got a little tour of the place and were told all about the cheese they sell and I immediately bought a little wheel of GOAT CHEESE to take home! Maye bought a few locally made souvenirs for her Ohio boyfriend and then we took the liberty to walk around the town. We found another mirador and spent a long time just enjoying the view. Around mid-day we headed to checkout some rock sculptures I'd heard about but never imagined it would be so large, well maintained, or interesting. A now 73 year old Alberto Gutierrez has been working for 30 years at carving imagines from Nicaragua's history into the rock faces where he lives. He invents the ideas, carves them, and then adds color to accent each work. It's priceless art at its best. In addition, he has landscaped the paths leading to these rock sculptures with help from the youth in the town. It was simply beautiful and awe inspiring. Maye couldn't stop saying, que bonita! at every turn and thanking me for bringing her here. Unfortunately my camera battery died before I could snap more pictures, but I think I was able to capture a little of its beauty. Defiantly check out the photos otherwise you'll be as clueless as I was before I went.
