This video covers the first 3 days of the Steinbeck Center's Journey from Oklahoma to California. The video was filmed and edited on the road, highlighting our stops in Okahoma and Texas. More to come as we continue our 10 day journey....
On Oct. 4, three esteemed, award-winning artists -- playwright Octavio Solis, visual artist Patricia Wakida and filmmaker P.J. Palmer -- set out on the road with the National Steinbeck Center to retrace the journey that The Grapes of Wrath's Joad family took along America's Route 66. The artists and the center are travelling through Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, just as the Joads did at the height of the Dust Bowl—toward California and their hopes of a better life.
The artists are blogging throughout the Journey at GrapesofWrath75.org. They are inviting public collaboration and feedback through multiple social media channels. This entire trip is being documented by a film crew and shared as part of the 75th Anniversary celebration in 2014.
In a special collaboration with Penguin Group (USA), the uniquely designed Penguin Book Truck and Penguin Pushcart is travelling with the National Steinbeck Center. Our partners at Penguin are stopping at selected locations to sell Steinbeck titles.
To stay up-to-date on this journey and to follow us on the road from October 4th - 14th, visit steinbeck.org.

Salinas Wild Things
Video by Elizeth Labega. At Wild Things A. R. Inc. we have adopted many of our animals from situations that were less than ideal for their health and well-being. We have found ways to share them with others on our tours and educational programs that we feel are fun, safe and rewarding to all - especially the animals.

I took a break from work and ended up on a road I've never been on before. I started off in Tijeras, went through Escobosa, Chilili, Tajique, Torron, Manzanos, Mountainair and then back up towards Albuquerque through Belden.
The more I learn about the history of New Mexico I can't help but be reminded of parallel history Native Americans have had to the Jewish people.
I really wish I got started earlier so I could have made more stops along the way. I know I'll have to go back and explore the Manzano Mountain range more often.

Greenfield is located in the Salinas Valley, 33 miles (53 km) southeast of Salinas, at an elevation of 289 feet. The city was the fastest growing in the county during the 2000’s, the population was 12,583 in 2000, increasing to 16,330 in the 2010 census. Its most well-known public event is the annual Harvest Festival.
Greenfield is a member of the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments. The city of Greenfield is centered in one of the most productive agricultural areas in the world. 80% of the lettuce grown in the United States is grown in the Salinas Valley. The area has often been coined as the Salad Bowl of the World.
Over $2 billion (US) worth of fruits and vegetables are produced and shipped annually across the U.S. and abroad. As a result many major vegetable producers are headquartered in the nearby city of Salinas.
Local tourism is increasing as more people are attracted to the area, which is also known as the center of Steinbeck Country because of famed author John Steinbeck. The area is also known as a premier wine grape growing region due to the rich soil and desirable climate. Vineyards, wineries and wine tasting rooms continue to expand throughout the region.
Another major tourist attraction is the newest U.S. National Park, Pinnacles National Park.
It is described as “America's newest National Park, the possibilities for discovery are limitless! Climbing and hiking among the breathtaking spires and rock formations that gave Pinnacles its name is only the beginning of what the park has to offer. Come seek out the California Condor in the high peaks, explore the rare chaparral vegetation and carpets of wildflowers, or just picnic at the visitor center.”
Greenfield, located in Monterey County, is in the heart of California’s Salinas Valley, approximately 135 miles south of San Francisco, 95 miles south of San Jose and 60 miles north of Paso Robles.
Greenfield traces its roots to 1905 and the creation of Clark Colony Water Company, which built a network of irrigation canals and filled them with water from the nearby Arroyo Saco River. A small town was included in the organizers’ plans, and thus was born Greenfield, aptly named in light of the fertile farmland which surrounds it. The city was incorporated in 1947.
At 289 feet above sea level, Greenfield and its residents enjoy moderate temperatures throughout the year, including mild winters and summers that are warm and dry.
