MACEDONIA: BRITISH TROOPS ARRIVE TO JOIN PEACE MISSION
English/Nat
British troops are continuing to arrive at Skopje airport in Macedonia, to join the NATO peacekeeping force bound for Kosovo.
Men from the Parachute Regiment will lead some of the first detachments that will enter the province as the Serbs withdraw.
By the end of the week around 7 and a half thousand UK soldiers will have arrived in Macedonia.
A Royal Air Force jet touches down in Macedonia bringing with it British paratroops who are to join the peace operation in Kosovo.
Two hundred men from the First Battalion, the Parachute Regiment arrived at Skopje airport early on Sunday afternoon.
Their arrival comes as Britain warned Serbs locked in Sunday's talks with NATO generals that any attempt to delay their withdrawal from Kosovo would lead to intensified air strikes.
As top Yugoslav army officers embarked on a second day of talks, Serb objections to the seven-day timetable laid down in NATO's instructions emerged.
The Serbs are reportedly objecting to demands that they clear minefields before they withdraw, and to plans for a buffer zone on the Serb side of the border with Kosovo.
In total, 780 paratroops are flying into Macedonia from the British airbase of Brize Norton. The first flight carried logistic staff, engineers, signallers and mine clearance experts.
A further thousand troops - including Gurkhas and troops from the Royal Irish Regiment - are to follow on Monday.
And by the end of the week thousands more are to arrive.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Today (Sunday) on this first flight there were probably approximately a hundred people. Today there's about 780. But by the end of the week some seven and a half thousand troops will have arrived new in theatre.
SUPER CAPTION: Captain Andrew Philips, First Battalion Parachute Regiment
Ten flights left the Wiltshire base on Saturday, bound for Skopje.
A further 10 flights are following on Sunday, but the number of daily flights will be stepped up to around 20 flights from Monday.
That pattern will continue for 10 days as vehicles and equipment are ferried to the Balkans.
The extra forces are to take the number of British personnel on the Macedonia-Kosovo border to 13-thousand by next weekend.

CHEKHOV’S CLASSICAL PLAY COMES TO LIFE IN A NEW INTERPRETATION.
“The Seagull” by the Russian playwright A. P. Chekhov’s is the first of his plays, which have become part of the canon of modern drama and changed forever the laws of theatre. The pursuit of revolution in art and living according to one’s own rules are also the main topics in this tragic story which was paradoxically dubbed a comedy by its author. It interweaves the fates of famous writer Boris Trigorin, romantic Nina Zarechnaya, actress Irina Arkadina whose career is on the wane and her rebellious son with theatrical ambitions Konstantin Treplyov. And yet the question of why Chekhov again and what his meaning is today constantly reappears. For Nina Nikolikj, the young and promising Macedonian director the answer is clear: “We will stop asking ourselves that question when we finally realize that Chekhov’s plays are life – a pure, cruel, concentrated life that happens everywhere, in all languages and at any time.” Her performance with the committed and sensitive actors of the Macedonian National Theatre is a proof of it.
With Bulgarian and English surtitles.
