STOWE ENGLAND
EE VISIT JULY 2000 Stowe is the name shared by an ancient village, country house and school (Stowe School) in Buckinghamshire in England. It is situated about two miles north-northeast of Buckingham. The breathtaking landscape gardens, including its many monuments, were acquired by the National Trust in 1990 and are open to the public. The National Trust are currently overseeing a complete restoration program of the grounds, temples and follies. The Village Originally the village of Stowe was built in the Anglo Saxon period. Its name refers to an ancient holy place of some eminence with the local community. The village remained in place up until 1712 when the 31 houses of the village were demolished to make way for the extensive gardens of the manor house. Stowe House In the early 17th century, the manor of Stowe was completely rebuilt by Sir Richard Temple, from the old medieval stronghold to what is now the core of the impressive mansion for which the area is known today. Having been redesigned and perfected subsequently over the years, the whole front is now 916 feet in length and is a breathtaking sight as you approach from the direction of Buckingham. Day Trip To Stowe Gardens National Trust | Meet Up Tour Pt3
We had a great day out meeting up with friends Alison and Bryan at landscape gardens.
The landscape garden at Stowe is one of the most remarkable legacies of Georgian England. Created by Viscount Cobham in the grounds of his family home from 1717, it reflected a programme of ideas based on Cobham’s hugely influential network of political affiliations. A Capability Brown designed National Trust landscape garden in Buckingham, Buckinghamshire.

TRAVEL SERIES ENGLAND: STOWE GARDENS, PALLADIAN BRIDGE, NATIONAL TRUST ENGLAND |TRAVELLER'S NEST NZ|
UK: STOWE GARDENS NATIONAL TRUST UK
This 18th century Grade I historical garden, had been recommended to us by a few people.
By the time, we have heard it from three different people I knew it is a place we should visit.
After a lovely weekend with Tammy, we pick up our rental car from Enterprise Rentals in Milton Keynes.
We hired a Ford Fiesta 4 door hatch, 1.1L. As we have a 3.2L diesel turbo truck in Australia, any kind of car under this size engine is going to take getting used to.
But despite the small engine this car performed very well for us. We did 605 miles in 8 days. Just the boot size is a bit small for a large suitcase.
Back to Stowe Gardens, as I can talk cars all day long. I used to be responsible for the Nestle NZ fleet as Group Financial Accountant and being an overlander, vehicles continue are a big part of our lives.
Stowe Gardens was beautiful. It is part of the National Trust.
We have never been to an 18th century garden before.
18th century gardens are all about the landscape, about the picture-perfect views, lakeside walks and temples creating a monumental landscape.
It is full of hidden meanings and classical references, the garden remains still so relevant today.
It has one of three Palladian Bridges in the UK.
A great afternoon out

British Gardens: Stowe & Herstmonceux
Follies at Stowe (first) and Herstmonceux Castle (from min 3:22)
'Capability' Brown (1716-1783):
He authored over 170 gardens surrounding the finest country houses and estates in Britain, such as Stowe, Croome Court , Blenheim Palace, Warwick Castle, Harewood House, Bowood House, Milton Abbey (and nearby Milton Abbas village), partially Kew Gardens.
His style: naturalistic compositions of smooth undulating grass running straight to the house, clumps, belts and scattering of trees with serpentine lakes, small rivers... His 'landscaped/grammatical garden' swept away almost all the remnants of previous formally patterned styles.
His critique: Russell Page accused him of 'encouraging his wealthy clients to tear out their splendid formal gardens and replace them with his facile compositions of grass, tree clumps and rather shapeless pools and lakes'. Conversely, Sir William Chambers and others complained that Brown's grounds differ very little from common fields, so closely is nature copied in most of them.
After him: A reaction against the smooth blandness of Brown's landscapes was inevitable. During the nineteenth century he was widely criticised, but during the twentieth century his popularity returned. Dorothy Stroud wrote the first full monograph on Capability Brown, fleshing out the generic attributions with documentation from country house estate offices.

My day out at Stowe, Buckingham
Day out at Stowe Buckingham UK
Stowe National Trust Gardens in Buckinghamshire | A Winter Walk
The gardens at Stowe are expertly managed by the National Trust. We ventured into the gardens to explore. There are well kept paths to roam, grasslands to conquer and woodlands to discover. Stowe is vast. At every turn you find a new view, a temple, a lake, a bridge or a statue. Stowe is huge and we couldn't uncover all its secrets in just one visit, thoroughly recommended for a family walk in the great outdoors. You can find a full review of my visit on the blog.
