National WASP WWII Museum- Sweetwater, TX
The National WASP WWII museum highlighted a 450 mile day trip to Sweetwater, TX. The WASP pilots performed the vital role of transporting planes across the US in preparation for the male fighter pilots. They also provided target towing so male fighter pilots in training could practice their in flight shooting skills.

Betty Strofhus, WASPs Veteran - World War II
September 27, 2012 - Every generation has its heroes. Occasionally those heroes have to fight to keep their title. Betty Strofhus is one of those heroes. Betty served as a Women's Airforce Service Pilot, known as WASPs, during World War II. She was relieved from duty when she and over a thousand other WASPs were disbanded in December of 1944. Not one to back away from a fight, Betty fought to make the WASP's story known to the public so they could get the recognition they deserved as the Army Airforce's first female pilots.

Honoring the WASP of WWII
Major Caroline Jensen, Right Wing, Thunderbird #3 talks about how the Women Airforce Service Pilots inspired her in her military aviation career.
Elizabeth Strohfus, World War 2 WASP--Oral History
In 1943, Strohfus joined the newly formed Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), which performed wartime duties in the United States, relieving male pilots for overseas combat dutying during WWII. Approximately 25,000 women applied. Only 1,800 were accepted. After training at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas, she earned her silver wings. She was sent to the Las Vegas Army airfield where she trained gunners, flew AT-6’s and P-39 Cobras. She co-piloted B-17’s and B-26’s. During this time Liz turned down a marriage proposal to remain a WASP and continue flying her favorite plane, the AT-6.

Decision Height Preview
Please join Back Alley Productions at the Players' Ring May 6th – 22nd for Decision Height by Meredith Dayna Levy.
From the winner of the 2013 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, comes a story about friendship and the complex, though essential, role of women in wartime. Virginia Hascall has left her home and fiancee to become a WASP. As the war rages on, it is through triumph and tragedy the she and her sisters in flight suits learn the strength of sisterhood and awaken to a deeper sense of purpose as they discover exactly why it is that they fly. With a cast of nine vibrant female characters, Decision Height offers a look into an under recognized subset of American Heroines.
Eleven Hundred U.S. women served as pilots for the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
In 1939, on the day after Germany’s tanks rolled into Warsaw Poland, pilot Jacqueline Cochran sent a letter to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt encouraging the use of women pilots in the armed forces.
In May 1940, another pilot, Nancy Harkness Love wrote a letter to the Ferrying Division of the Armed Air Forces with a similar idea, but the Army was not ready to put women in the cockpit of its planes.
By September 1942, however, all of that had changed.
The demand for male combat pilots and warplanes left the Air Transport Command (ATC) with a shortage of experienced pilots to ferry planes from factories to points of embarkation. The leaders of the ATC remembered Nancy Harkness Love’s proposal and hired her to recruit twenty-five of the most qualified women pilots in the country to ferry military aircraft. These outstanding women pilots were called the Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron or WAFS.
By September 14, 1942, General “Hap” Arnold, the Commanding General of the Army Air Forces, also approved a program that would train a large group of women to serve as ferry pilots. This program was placed under the direction of Jacqueline Cochran, and named the Women’s Flying Training Detachment or WFTD.
On August 5, 1943, the WAFS and the WFTD were merged and re-designated the Women Airforce Service Pilots or WASP. Cochran was appointed the Director and Love was named WASP Executive with the ATC Ferrying Division.
Nancy Harkness Love and the WAFS first gathered as a squadron at the New Castle Army Air Base in Wilmington, Delaware. Although these women pilots were required to have 500 hours of flying time, those that arrived often averaged more than 1,000 hours. The pilots trained for just a few weeks before they were assigned to their posts.
While the WAFS began their ferrying duties, Jacqueline Cochran was organizing and recruiting classes of women pilots. The training involved six months of ground school and flight training at the Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas.
The First few groups of graduates were assigned to the ATC and ferried planes from factories to points of embarkation. Eventually, the ATC complained that it could not take all of the pilots graduating from Avenger Field.
In response, Cochran announced to all air base command that she would accept any job the WASP could do and thereby relieve additional men for combat duty. The WASP flew every type of plane in the Army’s arsenal and served as flight instructors, tow-target pilots for gunnery training, engineering flight test pilots, and flying radio-controlled planes.
Unfortunately, for the sake of expediency, the WASP were hired under Civil Service. Cochran, Love, and Arnold intended the women pilots to be made part of the military, but the need for pilots was so great and militarization was slow, requiring an act of Congress. They began the program with the idea of militarizing the WASP later.
In 1944, just as the bill to militarize the WASP went before Congress, the need for pilots decreased. The decision was made to deactivate the WASP, and the program formally ended on December 20, 1944. General Arnold would record that “…in any future total effort, the nation can count on thousands of its young women to fly any of its aircraft.”
This amazing experiment using women pilots during wartime seemed destined to be forgotten. Then, in the mid-1970s, the Navy announced to the media that, for the first time in history, women would be permitted to fly military planes. The announcement reverberated among the WASP, and like nothing else, mobilized them to seek recognition. With the help of Bruce Arnold, General Hap Arnold’s son, and political help from Senator Barry Goldwater, a World War II veteran who had commanded WASP in his squadron, the WASP finally gained their belated militarization from Congress in 1977.
In 2010, the WASP were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by the United States Congress. Over 250 surviving WASP were on hand in our nation’s Capital to receive the honor.
Recognising the pioneering female pilots of WWII
(14 Nov 2017) LEADIN:
A group of pioneering female pilots who flew during World War II have been honoured for their groundbreaking missions.
The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) flew alongside the military but were never fully recognised for their accomplishments.
Now they're the inspiring the next generations of female pilots.
STORYLINE:
Remembering the days when they were living the high life.
Now in their mid to late 90's, these three women were among the first female pilots in the airforce during World War II.
They took to the skies as part of the Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII, also known as WASPs, and were trailblazers in assisting in the war effort.
Their contribution to aviation history was celebrated over Veteran's Day weekend to raise awareness about these women's forgotten contribution.
Hundreds of people attended an event at the Museum of Flying in Santa Monica, California called: The Greatest Generation Meets the New Generation, Women in Flight.
Female pilots recently serving with the Navy, Army, Air Force and Marines joined the original WASPs to share stories.
For the younger pilots it was a chance to hear from their predecessors who have now become their role models.
Back in the day the women were known as the FlyGirls and were never fully recognised by the military or governments for their role during the war.
When the conflict ended, they had to give up their jobs.
Now there are plans to tell their story in a TV series which is in development.
99 year-old Beverly Beesemyer was raised in Beverly Hills and paid her way through flying school in order to gain acceptance into the Women Airforce Service Pilot training program in Texas.
Her missions included training male pilots to use machine guns to attack enemy aircraft. After the WASPs were disbanded, Beesemyer continued to fly and became a flying instructor at the Monrovia Airport.
It really hits my heart really well because of all these years we've been kind of forgotten for a long time and now that we're being recognized and everything, I just feel honoured, more than honoured, I feel more honoured than anything, just to be able to fly the planes that I was able to fly, she says.
96 year-old Alyce Rohrer grew up in Utah and earned her pilot's license before the age of 15. She lied about her age to join WASP at age 18 rather than the required 21 year age requirement.
She later went on to become a test pilot for Army training aircraft in Texas.
Rohrer says it was awful that WASP service was never formally recognised.
It was horrible, when we were released because when we were called up we were promised that we would become military and Congress was working on a bill to do that. When I signed up I expected to be military and when we served, as you can see, we wore uniforms, we had wings, we graduated as second lieutenants, the same as the boys, and then as soon as the war in Europe was over and the men were coming back and needed our jobs, Congress forgot all about us and said go home. That is what hurt. That's the reason why it makes me almost cry, she says.
Shirley Chase Kruse was not yet 21 when she joined the WASP program.
After they disbanded, she went back to civilian life, and got a job proofreading technical manuals at an airport in New Jersey.
She says despite being women, they contributed just as much as the men.
The ladies met the Next Generation of military pilots; Maura George (Lt. Col. US ARMY and US Air Force), Jacquelyne Nichols (Capt. US Marine Corps), Tamara Bartlette (Lt. Col. US Air Force), Karen Fine Brasch (Cdr. ret. US Navy) and Lisa H. Dolan (Cdr. ret. US NAVY).
For many at the event, it was a chance to get their books signed and to thank these pioneering women for their service.

Clay County Jail Museum- Henrietta, TX
A full day of riding and Texas history in Henrietta, TX at the Clay County Jail Museum. There was also a remarkable collection of historical Clay County Texas pieces set in a fully restored 1890 Jail.
The most significant artifact reminiscent of the county's early beginnings is the 1890 jail located in Henrietta, Texas. For over a century, this magnificent structure has served as a reminder of the early struggles of another time. In the mid 1990's the abandoned structure was restored. A further restoration in 2008/2009 added a steel framework to support the deteriorating brick and stone structure. It stands today as one of the best preserved structures of this era in Texas. The jail features one of the few jails built with internal gallows.
