Best place to visit in Pune | National War Memorial, Pune | Independence Day Special | Best of Pune
National War Memorial is in Pune’s Cantonment and it is dedicated to post Independence war martyrs. This museum is the only war memorial in South Asia which has been established by citizen’s contribution. Here, main highlights are replica of INS Trishul, Mig-23 and various battle tanks. Museum has good collection of arms and ammunition, different uniforms being used by Indian Armed Forces, gallantry awards etc. The history of Indian Armed Forces and it’s operations are displayed here. It also displays brief history of Rajputs, Marathas and Southern Kings.
Please visit the place on Saturday evening to witness Parade which is open for all. This certainly is a must visit place in Pune.

The National War Museum was built in 1997 and is a memorial for Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation. It was established by citizens of Pune under the Express Citizen Forum which established the War Memorial Fund. The museum is situated in Pune Cantonment and has been opened up for the public since 1998.
The National War Museum is made up of pillars and spreads across 25 feet of land. The major attraction of the museum is MIG 23 BN Jet Fighter which was used during the Kargil War. The museum showcases arms, uniforms and personal mementos which were given as a scottish contribution to the British Army.

Visiting Timing: 0900 Hours to 1730 Hours
Entry Fee: Free
Distance from Pune railway station 2 km
5.40 pm every Saturday evening, a parade followed by a wreath-laying ceremony for all the soldiers who lost their lives in battle for the country takes place. A band of musicians from the first Mahar Battalion of the Indian Army marches in and play ‘My Home’, on a Scottish pipe tune as they march into the museum. The sound of the marching in tandem is sure to give you chills.

The band is followed by a platoon while a live commentary is synced with the proceedings. ‘Sare Jahaan Se Achha’ plays in the background and the contingent salutes the war heroes and the lowering of the flag takes place, marking the end of the 20-minute ceremony. To carry out this parade, there is a lot of coordination, practice and hard effort that goes into it. School kids, elderly and many other city-dwellers can all be a part of this, so if you haven’t made any plans this Saturday, head to the War Memorial and support our soldiers and cheer them on as loud as you can.

Jaisalmer War Museum, also known as Laungewala War Memorial was established in the military station designed with the view of honouring the war heroes. It embraces the bravery and sacrifices of the Indian Army. On 24 August 2015, the museum was inaugurated and declared to the Nation. It took place on the day of Golden Jubilee commemoration of the India-Pakistan war in 1965. The museum popularly known as JWM, houses two information display halls, an audio-visual room and a souvenir shop. It also has an Honour wall that has engraved the names of gallantry award winners of the Param Vir Chakra and Maha Vir Chakra. Along with tanks, guns and military vehicles, the display has a repertoire of trophies and vintage equipment.
The primary structure was presented a Hunter Aircraft by the Indian Air Force that destroyed the enemy tank columns during the Battle of Laungewala. The place also includes Murals of soldiers who lost their lives during the war and the weapons used for the same. The audio-visual room screens the movie about the battle in which Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, a recipient of Maha Vir Chakra gives a detailed account of the soldiers who fought the war. Located 2 hours away from Jaisalmer, on the Jaisalmer-Jodhpur highway, the memorial is a salute to Indian Army.

The National War museum is a war memorial in Pune dedicated to Post Independence war martyrs. A Mig 23 BN, which was used in the Kargil War, has been kept on display at the memorial. A replica of the now decommissioned frigate INS Trishul, which served in the Portuguese-Indian War and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, is also kept on display.
