Pécs, Hungary 2019 The City of Culture
FacebookPinterest
When plotting their trips to Hungary, typically folks will plan on spending most, if not all, of their time in Budapest, thrusting spoons into bowls of goulash, splashing their way through thermal baths, and cavorting in antiques-filled ruin pubs. Spend just one night walking along the Danube to see all those shiny, twinkling buildings across the river and it becomes obvious why few travelers want to leave the confines of soulful Budapest. But the country is home to numerous other magical destinations, including Pécs, a charming getaway lying at the foot of the Mecsek mountains.
Located near the Croatian border, Pécs is about three hours southwest of Budapest via a comfortable train ride from either the Keleti or Kelenföld railway stations. Pécs has long prospered as a multicultural epicenter, the peaceful union of Hungarians, Croatians, Serbians, Germans, and other ethnic groups garnering it the nickname “the Borderless City.”
Although it’s Hungary’s fifth largest metropolis, it delightfully lacks an intense, overwhelming sense of bustle. Instead it’s polished and subdued, teeming with densely built-up streets of elegant Baroque structures and ancient artistic treasures that helped make it—as well as Essen and Istanbul—a 2010 European Capital of Culture. This honor spawned an impressive slate of urban developments for Pécs, from the revitalization of parks and squares to the creation of the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter. Yes, it’s a city that invites wandering on sultry, cardigan-only evenings, but it’s just as alluring in the winter— particularly when there’s an illuminated Christmas tree and festive stalls doling out cups of heartwarming mulled wine.
There is much to explore. The city’s roots stretch back more than 2,000 years, when it was first settled by the Celts. It later became part of the Roman Empire, a slice of history underscored by the fourth-century Early Christian Necropolis that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Turks’ powerful hold on Pécs is most brilliantly revealed through the Mosque of Pasha Qasim, a green copper-domed relic from the Ottoman Empire, most likely constructed in the latter 16th century, that has since been converted into a Catholic church. Nearby is the must-gawk Pécs Cathedral. Originally built in the 11th century, several incarnations later it’s graced by a mighty collection of Romanesque sculptures.
Across from the cathedral is the petite Csontváry Museum, where up a grand staircase patrons find rooms dedicated to the poetic, large-scale works of Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka. The landscapes from this quirky Hungarian pharmacist-turned-painter from the 19th and early 20th centuries are especially rich. Beyond fine art, Pécs is synonymous with the decorative arts, specifically porcelain from the storied Zsolnay ceramics factory founded in 1853. Lustrous tiles produced here went on to dress buildings across the country, like Budapest’s Museum of Applied Arts. While the range of these ornate products are introduced to visitors at the Zsolnay Museum, it is even more interesting to while the day away in the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, a maze of promenades, greenery, and well-preserved buildings on the grounds of the original Zsolnay factory. The highlight of the complex is the Golden Age of the Zsolnay-Gyugyi Collection, where many intricate vases shimmer with textured eosin glaze. But there are also vintage puppets and politically charged exhibitions from modern-day artists like drMáriás to peruse, maybe even followed by a live jazz performance. For lunch, do settle into the lovely Zsolnay Restaurant and Café, where freshly baked potato bread whets the appetite for sweet-potato cream soup and steak salad spruced up by balsamic-Dijon mustard vinaigrette and a smattering of Grana Padano.
Elsewhere in Pécs the food is just as satisfying. Rustic Pezsgőház Étterem, for example, is set in an old wine cellar with arched brick ceilings. Grape-strewn goat cheese followed by a trio of golden pork cutlets draped over parsley-infused mashed potatoes provides pure cold-weather comfort. By contrast, the upbeat Jókai Bisztró is swish and contemporary, showing off myriad bottles of wine while serving refined platters of baked beef and bread dumplings. Afterwards, consider the animated Egylet, a craft-beer pub-meets Balkan bistro decorated with black-and-white photos and alarm clocks that showcases small-batch brews like those from made-in-Slovakia Kaltenecker.
Király Street is the perennially clogged strip, attracting both tourists and the party-loving youth who attend the University of Pécs, Hungary’s first university. Pay respects to the statue-adorned National Theatre of Pécs then pop into Cooltour Café, a cozy lair with mid-century furniture, for a nightcap of plum pálinka, Hungary’s indigenous fruit brandy.
Eger, Hungary - Minaret
While traversing Central Europe, Christopher Skutela takes us to the 2nd most well known city in Hungary: Eger. Near the city center, we find an interesting relic left over from Turkish occupation, the northernmost minaret of the former Ottoman Empire. Stunning views of the city are found at the top after a harrowing climb.
Swedish Personal Ombudsmen in Soteria Foundation, Hungary
Talking about personal ombudsman program and supported decision-making system in Sweden, Oct 1, 2013. With Hungarian translating.
The system with Personal Ombud or Ombudsmen (PO) for psychiatric patients is a Swedish innovation, which has grown out of the Swedish psychiatric reform of 1995. It came as a solution to a problem that existed, but which no one so far had any idea of how to handle.
A PO is a professional, highly skilled person, who works to 100 % on the commission of the psychiatric patient only. The PO is in no alliance with psychiatry or the social services or any other authority, and not with the patient's relatives or others in his surroundings.
The PO does only what his client wants him to do. As it can take a long time - sometimes several months - before the client knows and dares to tell what kind of help he wants, the PO has to wait, even though a lot of things are chaotic and in a mess.
This also means that the PO has to develop a long-time engagement for his clients, usually for several years. This is a necessary condition for developing a trustful relation and for coming into more essential matters. It is the total opposite to traditional services, where the psychiatric patient is either sent around from one person to another all the time, or has almost no support at all.
The PO is especially focused on supporting the psychiatric patients who are most hard to reach and who usually are left without support, because no one knows how to reach and how to help them. This means psychiatric patients with severe psychic disorders (mainly psychosis) and who are homeless or live very isolated and barricaded - and who are hard to communicate with or are very hostile towards authorities. And this means that the PO cannot sit and wait for them, but has to go out and try to find them in their place of living, and to use all kind of creativity in finding ways to get in touch with them.
To make this possible it is necessary that the PO is independent from all authorities. In some places in Sweden PO's are employed by the community, but that causes various troubles and makes it impossible for the PO to reach psychiatric patients who are suspicious or hostile against representatives of the authorities. There should be no suspicion about the PO having double loyalties. An independent NGO as principal is to prefer.

10 Things to do in Bratislava, Slovakia Travel Guide Video Transcript:
We're visiting Bratislava, Slovakia and in this video we're going to show you guys 10 things to do in Bratislava. Let's get started.
Our first stop was Devin Castle, which is located in Devin, a borough of Bratislava. This is the one attraction we visited that was a little further from the Old Town - a 30-minute bus ride.
Devin Castle is a ruined castle that sits on Slovak territory at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers.
We ate at a restaurant called “Modra Hviezda” which is located at the base of Bratislava Castle and feels like a cave.
Bratislava Castle was Built in the 9th century and modified over the centuries many times over, this 4-towered castle sits perched on a hill overlooking the Danube River.
You get nice views over the Old Town, plus you have the Slovak National Museum & the Baroque Gardens on the north side of the palace.
The following day, we set out to explore the Old Town and stopping cafe for a decadent breakfast.
Bratislava’s Old Town is compact & easy to explore on foot and cover most of the sights in one day. We went on our own do-it-yourself tour finding all sorts of interesting statues & landmarks.
The Blue Church is located on Bezručova Street, which is about a 10-15 minute walk from the Old Town designed in the art nouveau style.
Locals in Bratislava like to say that the best view of their city is from the UFO Bridge because you can’t see the UFO bridge. You get amazing views of Bratislava during sunset.
And while you’re down by the Danube, you can either enjoy a stroll along the river, or go on a sightseeing cruise.
Prašná bašta is another cozy restaurant located at basement level and we had another wonderful meal.
For sports fans be sure to check out a HC Slovan Bratislava ice hockey game. They play in the KHL and the level of hockey and entertainment value is fantastic.
And that’s a wrap for our trip to Bratislava. While we can see the appeal of doing this as a day trip from Vienna, we loved having the extra time to really enjoy the city, try out some great restaurants, and make it to some of the further attractions like Devin Castle. If you have a few days to spare, this is a great little capital to visit.
Any other things to do in Bratislava that we may have missed, feel free to share your suggestions with travellers in the comments below.

10 Things to do in Zadar, Croatia Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Let's visit Zadar, Croatia together as we cover 10 of the best things to do in Zadar in this travel guide.
Our first stop was Queen Jelena Madijevka Park which has the distinction of being the oldest public park in Croatia. The park looks over the Land Gate which is the main entrance to the Old Town.
During the 16th century, the Venetians helped Zadar withstand the Turkish sieges by building a large water cistern with five wellheads, giving this square its name. These five wells were used to supply the city with water until the year 1838.
Among the ruins of the forum, you might notice there’s one particular Roman column that still stands intact. This one is called the shame post which during the Middle Ages was used to chain and humiliate people who had committed crimes.
The Church of St. Donatus sits in the middle of the Roman Forum and it dates back to the beginning of the 9th century. The church was built in the Byzantine-style in a circular shape - typical of the early medieval construction in Dalmatia. This church has seen many uses from warehouse to museum, but these days it hosts concerts.
Located right next to St. Donatus, the bell tower is actually part of St Anastasija's Cathedral. Climbing this Romanesque bell tower is not for the faint of heart, especially once you reach the spiralling metal staircase on the last floor, but if you make it, you are rewarded with views of the town and the marina.
The meal came to 32 Euros for two mains, two glasses or red wine, and two desserts. The truffle gnocchi was our favourite truffle dish in Croatia.
When it comes to sunset, there are quite a few spots to choose from. We really enjoyed the pier right across from the Roman Forum, however, the Sea Organ is another popular spot. If you do go to the Sea Organ for sunset, you can also check out the Greeting to the Sun, which is another unusual art installation.
This solar-powered work of art lights up in an array of colours once the sun goes down.
Lastly, we leave you with a few scenes of Zadar at night.
We hope you enjoyed this video and we’ll see you in the next one as we continue our travels in Croatia.
