They have some really good features, like, you can meet a cheetah, you can handfeed lion. Also, when they have feeding hours, you can go and observe how zookeepers feed animals.

A visit to Canberra Zoo & Aquarium. Sept27, 2019
We took Jenny's Mum, for a visit to Canberra Zoo on the eve of her 91st birthday. She did remarkably well, using her new walker for only the second time. A marvellous effort, on a beautiful day.

Canberra Zoo Australia
Canberra zoo in Australia. A quick trip to the zoo with friends to take video of all the animals we saw. The zoo is going through some major renovations but currently has hotel rooms you can stay in overnight. The rooms have a whole wall that is glass so you can see into the enclosures all night long. A really neat idea if you want to see animals after the zoo has closed.
If you happen to be in Canberra give this zoo a visit.

2001 - National Zoo Canberra
Filmed late 2001/early 2002, after the Canberra bush fires, Tim Husband from the National Zoo & Aquarium explains a little of the history of the zoo and hopes for the zoos future. He introduces some of the newest animal attractions and encourages people to visit after the fires.
See the devastated zoo surrounds, cougars, tigons, otters, sun bear and native animals plus some aquarium footage.

We took a look around Canberra Zoo when there for the Queens Birthday Weekend. Well worth a visit.

The National Zoo and Aquarium (NZA) first opened in 1990 as the National Aquarium. The Aquarium consisted of approximately 30 different species, a large restaurant and function area, with its main feature being a large 1.5 million litre aquarium with an underwater viewing tunnel. This was reportedly the first of its type in the world and was manufactured by a local Canberra company. The Aquarium was situated on around 7 hectares of land which also incorporated a series of outdoor ponds and streams for trout farming. The Aquarium struggled both financially and with some of the major exhibits and within 3 years of opening had been sold to another operator.
This phase of the facility lasted around five years. During this period, the new operator added several outdoor exhibits that consisted mainly of native wildlife. The large aquarium was converted from saltwater to freshwater to reduce costs. The overall theme of the facility changed in an attempt to meet the demands of a large Asian inbound tourist market into the ACT and offered an “Australian” experience that incorporated the wildlife park aspects as well as other activities such as fly fishing in the trout ponds, sheep shearing and boomerang throwing demonstrations.
We hope you enjoy this video.

Giraffe Training - National Zoo & Aquarium Canberra
Humberkhali our resident Giraffe, is due to for his annual check over by the vet. This can present a few issues with large and exotic animals.
Keeper Kyle shows how he conditioned Hummer to be calm around the metal boxes that contain certain veterinary equipment.
Like most giraffe Hummer is easily frightened of new things in his surroundings and the silver boxes of the vet were too scary for him to come into close proximity to. Over the last 2 weeks I have been using a combination of classical desensitisation and operant counter-conditioning to change Hummer's opinion of the box from something scary and unknown to a source of yummy treats!
His opinion of the box has changed so much that he is even now actively targeting his nose to the box - which just 2 weeks prior prevented him from even entering the training area. By using these techniques we allow the animals to assist us in their own healthcare without any stress.
