Vanuatu Native Greeting
Went on the Round Island Tour at Efate Island with Leti and Noah. We had a ball , these guys came out all crazy when we stopped at a little sea side village to greet us in a different way. They said it was a peacefull way they did it, It hate to see the unpeacefull version..They had us follow them into the village where they performed a few dancers for us. Then we looked around the village and went down to the brilliant little white sand perfect light blue water beach where there was kids playing in the water, it was alot of fun..

HIST 2323 Final Project- Blackbirding
***On the fourth slide the audio suddenly cuts out, but this is what was said:
Many people at the time protested the legitimacy of this ‘labor trade’. These islanders were generally abused as they worked in harsh conditions in the Queensland sugar fields. Since some islanders came to the islands willingly and signed contracts, there was much debate as to whether or not they were considered workers. However, this does not account for the slave-like conditions in which they were subject to. According to many accounts at the time, conditions varied from plantation to plantation. Abuse included being beaten, deprived of food or leisure time, medical neglect and the separation of families. At the time, many trade unions in Australia were fighting for workers’ rights, but the Pacific workers of Queensland were not allowed to do so. Over a period of 40 years, traders recruited these native non-European laborers. The Queensland government did try to regulate the trade: they required every ship involved in the trade to carry a person approved by the government to ensure the rights of the laborers. But, such government observers were often corrupted by bonuses paid for laborers 'recruited,' or blinded by alcohol, and did little or nothing to prevent sea-captains from tricking islanders on-board or otherwise engaging in kidnapping with violence.

Tribal fight in Vanuatu
Champagne Bay, Espiritu Santo Island
I shot this in 2006 while working on a ship in the south pacific. By the time I had the camera rolling they had already exchanged a couple of punches and blows to the head.
Someone explained later that the beach has 2 tribes competing for the cruise ships passengers dollars, tensions had been building and the lid blew off the day we so happened to be there.
The 2 guys in the second half who intervened were from the ship's security staff, they happened to be maoris from New Zealand, turns out it helped calm things down...
