Puerto Princesa Underground River: Philippines - New7Wonders of Nature
The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is located about 50 km north of the city of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines. It features a limestone karst mountain landscape with an 8.2 km. navigable underground river. A distinguishing feature of the river is that it winds through a cave before flowing directly into the South China Sea. It includes major formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers. The lower portion of the river is subject to tidal influences. The underground river is reputed to be the world’s longest. At the mouth of the cave, a clear lagoon is framed by ancient trees growing right to the water’s edge. Monkeys, large monitor lizards, and squirrels find their niche on the beach near the cave.

It comprises the eastern half of Busuanga Island, all of Coron Island and about 50 other minor islets stretching as far as Tara Island in the north-east and Canipo Island in the south.[5] All these islands are part of the Calamian Archipelago in Northern Palawan that separates the South China Sea from the Sulu Sea.
The main population center of the municipality is composed of Poblacion barangays 1 to 6, where the Municipal Building, the Municipal Legislative Building, and the Judicial Hall of the Municipal Circuit Trial Court are located. Its fiesta is held annually on August 28 in honor of Saint Augustine. It is the commercial capital of the Calamian Islands.
The municipality is home to the Coron Island Natural Biotic Area, which is listed in the natural category of the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.[6]

PUERTO PRINCESA UNDERGROUND RIVER TripPlanner Travel and Tours
The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is a protected area of the Philippines located about 80 kilometres (50 mi) north of the city centre of Puerto Princesa, Palawan. The river is also called Puerto Princesa Underground River. The national park is located in the Saint Paul Mountain Range on the western coast of the island. It is bordered by St. Paul Bay to the north and the Babuyan River to the east. The City Government of Puerto Princesa has managed the National Park since 1992. The entrance to the subterranean river is a short hike or boat ride from the town Sabang.
In 2010, a group of environmentalists and geologists discovered that the underground river has a second floor, which means that there are small waterfalls inside the cave. They also found a cave dome measuring 300 m (980 ft) above the underground river, rock formations, large bats, a deep water hole in the river, more river channels, and another deep cave, as well as marine creatures and more. Deeper areas of the underground river are almost impossible to explore due to oxygen deprivation.
The park has a limestone karst mountain landscape. St. Pauls Underground River Cave is more than 24 km (15 mi) long and contains an 8.2 km (5.1 mi) long underground section of the Cabayugan River. The river winds through the cave before flowing directly into the West Philippine Sea [2] and is navigable by boat up to 4.3 km (2.7 mi) in from the sea. The cave includes major formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers, including the 360-meter-long Italian's Chamber with approximate 2.5 million square meters volume. It is one of the largest cave rooms in the world.[3] The lower portion of the river up to 6 km from the sea, is subject to tidal influences. Until the 2007 discovery of an underground river in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula,[4] the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River was reputed to be the world's longest underground river.
The area also represents a habitat for biodiversity conservation. The site contains a full mountain-to-the-sea ecosystem and has some of the most important forests in Asia. It was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site on December 4, 1999.
One Night At The Four Ps - Palawan Puerto Princesa Pension
A whole lots of P's going on here. One night at the Palawan Puerto Princesa Pension, only 10 minutes away from the airport. A cute, four-story hotel that would have been a lot cuter if we had scored bigger rooms than what Margie fondly refered to as, the cell.
A double bed smack up again one wall and a toilet that was so close to the bathroom wall that 5'3 me had to sit sideways on the toilet! Did you ever? There are bigger rooms but the hotel was booked solid, probably the best in town.
The Palawan portion of the Philippines finished here. Margie and Art were going on to a medical mission while Steve and I were heading to Cebu for a little R&R. Do what the smart people do and focus on sun, diving and snorkeling. All three which Palawan has in abundance. We heard wonderful comments about the El Nido area. Just as we discovered in Luzon, skip the tribal encounters.
'Nuff said...

PHILIPPINES PART 1: PUERTO PRINCESA ????????
????Location: Puerto Princesa, Philippines.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Part one of our time in the Philippines began in Puerto Princesa on the island of Palawan. The city has a laid-back, old-school vibe with lots and lots and lots of fast-food joints (Jollibee anyone?). It was a mixed experience with very long power-cuts and blinding heat but once we got out of the city it was easy to see Palawan’s beautiful natural wonders.

WHAT WE GOT UP TO:
We would advise if you are visiting Palawan to see El Nido or Coron to consider skipping Puerto Princesa and traveling straight up to El Nido via bus. The town doesn’t have loads to offer but it was a nice relaxing stopover for a couple of days for us.
The town has one main strip, Rizal Avenue, which most shops and fast-food restaurants are based. We spent most of our time walking around the town, visiting the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and the Baywalk Park. Make sure you get in one of the unusual trikes for a tour of the city in style.
Must visit:
Eightynine café - this little joint on the East side of Rizal Avenue just past the airport has great coffee, a modern feel and inventive breakfast options. The service was great due to five members of staff for only two covers (often very common in Asia). They even put cute cartoon stencils on your coffee!
Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park - We booked a tour through Klook at £25 each. This included transit to the national park, a great buffet lunch and a tour guide for the day. There is a maximum number of people allowed in the caves every day and so you may need to wait around for a slot. As part of the tour we were able to either purchase an extra of ziplining or a mangrove tour - we chose ziplining - it was a fun way to pass the time whilst waiting for our slot.
The expanse of the caves were huge. In order to preserve the caves and not disturb bats ????, there isn’t a lot of light inside. It was still a great experience and we were given the front of the canoe for the best view.

ABOUT US: We’re a couple based in Leeds, UK. Like everyone, we love a good holiday but we're making our love of travel the main part of the next year by backpacking and traveling to new places. At the end of 2018 we decided to undertake a big travel adventure whilst we’re young and with no commitments. At the moment we've planned to be away for one year but it could be longer! We moved out of our flat and in with parents to save money and have left our jobs ready to start our once in a lifetime tour ✈️. We hope to vlog about our experiences and share with you our journey whilst backpacking. We’ve got some idea of the areas we want to visit but this may expand whilst we’re away ????️ You can keep updated on the places we visit by subscribing to our Youtube channel:
