Special Jewish visit in Kraków/Poland Jewish District - Kazimierz Part 1
Kazimierz – the district south of the Old Town between the Wisła River and ul. Dietla (where a tributary of the Wisła once flowed) was the centre of Jewish life in Kraków for over 500 years, before it was systematically destroyed during World War II. In the communist era it became one of Kraków’s dodgiest districts while gradually falling into disrepair. Rediscovered in the 1990s, thanks to the fall of the regime and worldwide exposure through the lens of Steven Spielberg, Kazimierz has rebounded and is today Kraków’s most exciting district – a bustling, bohemian neighbourhood packed with historical sites, atmospheric cafes and art galleries. Well-known for its associations with Schindler and Spielberg, traces of Kazimierz’s Jewish history have not only survived, but literally abound in the form of the district’s numerous synagogues and Jewish cemeteries. In fact, no other place in Europe conveys a sense of pre-war Jewish culture on the continent better than Kazimierz. As a result, the district has become a major tourist draw and pilgrimage site for Jews, which has led to the return of contemporary Jewish culture in the area. Each summer since 1988 the massively popular Jewish Culture Festival has filled Kazimierz’s streets and cafes with music, while educating Kraków’s residents and guests about the city’s pre-war Jewish history and celebrating modern Jewish culture. The fact that it’s one of the year’s biggest parties proves that there’s more to Kazimierz than sepia photographs and old synagogues. Here you’ll find the heart of Kraków’s artistic, bohemian character behind the wooden shutters of dozens of antique shops and art galleries. Peeling façades and obscure courtyards hide dozens of bars and cafes, many affecting an air of pre-war timelessness. Centred around the former Jewish square now known as Plac Nowy, Kazimierz has emerged as the city’s best destination for cafe culture and nightlife. Alternative, edgy and packed with oddities, Kazimierz is an essential point of interest to any visitor.

There are restaurants on the ground floor and the basement floor, especially the underground restaurant is worth a visit.主廣場很大,房屋都很美,舊市政廳現在是博物館,有許多不同的展示,在它的北邊是新的市政廳,地面層和地下層各有餐廳,尤其是地下餐廳值得一遊
For lunch, taste the soup from the ground floor restaurant in the north. It is a very local Polish taste and very delicious.

Końskowola Ghetto
twitter : @ceepackaging
Końskowola is only a small village yet much happened there in the past. It has an odd name - in Polish it means horse's will.
During WW2 it was captured by the Nazis around 15 September 1939. A POW camp was set up there which was closed quite quickly and the prisoners were taken elsewhere. There was also a slave labour camp where prisoners were forced to do mainly agricultural work.
The ghetto was set up in 1941 (I think) and people were transported here from nearby villages and towns such as Kazimierz Dolny. The latter was an ancient Jewish settlement - a shtetl where Jews outnumbered Catholics by three to one. Nonetheless they were quickly transported to Końskowola and the SS attempted to turn Kazimierz Dolny into some sort of a recreational facility for themselves.
There are photographs in the US Holocaust Museum (available on line) which show some of the buildings shown here.
People also appear to have been brought here from Slovakia as the dictator Father Tiso sold his Jewish population to the Nazis.
There was a large deportation to Sobibór in May 1942 where the population of Końskowola became amongst the first victims of that death camp.
In October 1942, Police Battalion 101 from Hamburg arrived in the village and murdered most of the remaining population although some people appear to have been taken elsewhere.
My channel on you tube : is one of the most prolific from Poland. I have produced around 1,600 original films, most in English but also in Polish, French, Italian, Spanish and the occasional hint of German and Hebrew. My big interest in life is travel and history but I have also placed films on other subjects
Please feel free to ask questions in the public area or to comment on things you disagree with. Sometimes there are mistakes because I speak without preparation. If I see the mistakes myself, I make this clear in the text. Please also leave a star rating!
There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers.
Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!
