What to do on Koufonisia
Where less is more
There is beauty in simplicity. Pano Koufonisi may not have all the luxuries that some other islands like Santorini offer, but it has all the necessary comforts and, more importantly, provides unspoiled natural beauty. Despite being the smallest in circumference of all the inhabited Cycladic islands (10 sq km), it has enticed travellers of all kinds as an alternative holiday option over the past 20 years.
Dive into an emerald dream
You cannot resist the sea around the magical Koufonisia. Golden coastlines, still waters and sandy shores. The urge to dive straight into the Aegean will prove irresistible! Finikas, Fanos, Italida, Pori … there is even a beach called The Pool, true to its name.
Explore by boat
If there ever was a place to visit by boat, it is the waters around Pano and Kato (lower) Koufonisi. It’s not just the hidden beaches that await discovery, but a tapestry of exotic imagery, endless hues of blue, green and turquoise. The welcoming Mediterranean is ready to offer you the most exotic swim of your life!
All roads lead to... Hora!
Hora is a Cycladic microcosm that welcomes you to wander its small streets. Pots of geraniums, white walls, romantic afternoons. At night the town comes alive: tourists and locals socialise, the mood is vibrant and fun. Strangers exchange warm glances and soft-spoken conversations, and sweet music tempts you in like a siren.
Hidden gems of Koufonisia
An idyllic hideout: the sea caves of the Small Cyclades
Legend says that pirates hid in the sea caves on the north side of Pano Koufonisi. Impressive shelters carved out by the waves, with Lilliputian beaches and the perfect spots for fishing enthusiasts.
In the Keros of Arpisti and Avliti
At night, from Pano Koufonisi, you can see the small island of Keros in the distance, shaped like a woman’s silhouette. In the morning, Keros reveals its archaeological significance. A protected site and for some even more important than Delos, it is the hometown of the Arpisti and Avliti, the traditional flute- and harp-playing figurines depicted in so much Cycladic art.
Exotic Kato (lower) Koufonisi
No one lives here anymore. There are about ten buildings altogether and a famous tavern. Moor your little boat to the quay and begin to explore on foot (or continue by speedboat for more convenience). The beaches Nero, Pezoulia and Fikio await you.
Pano Koufonisi is the smallest and most densely populated island of the Cycladic island group. The main occupation of the locals is fishing and, in recent years, tourism. Compared to its population, it has one of the biggest fishing fleets in Greece. The white windmill on the east side of the port welcomes visitors when they arrive on the island. The settlement of Chora on the southwest coast of Koufonisi is a characteristic example of Cycladic architecture. Its sandy beaches make up the island's picture. Koufonisi has only been developed for tourism in the last ten years, so the natural beauty and its traditional colour has remained unfaded.
There are many places of interest that someone should visit during his stay on Koufonisia, such as the central and the back port, the piscatorial shelter, the carnagio, the windmills and the typical churches. The fishermen in their small boats (caiques) is a characteristic picture of the island. The full-moon nights and Keros' view in the moonlight are a unique experience for the visitors. According to the residents of Koufonisi, the contour of the deserted island in the night resembles a female, prostrated Cycladic statuette. According to the same description, the first full moon (in 21 of June) is coming up from the vagina of this female figure. The church of Virgin Mary is one of the most important sights on Koufonisi, whereas in Keros apart from the archaeological findings, one can enjoy the magic sunrise. On Pano Koufonisi, the best beaches are at Loutro, Parianos, Foinikas, Fanos, Italida, and Pori where you can windsurf as well. The white windmill which stands at the harbour entrance as if welcoming visitors.
Koufonisia er lokalisert mellom Naxos og Amorgos. Hovedstaden heter Khora

Kato Koufonissi island, a free camping Heaven | exotic Greece | Κάτω Κουφονήσι
This untouched secret paradise has no electricity and no accommodation (except free camping). Kato (lower) Koufonisi is located just below Pano Koufonisi. It has not been developed for tourists and is virtually uninhabited.
The boat will drop you off at the only tavern on the island and if winds are ok, to Nero beach. From the tavern, you can walk to many different beaches (approximately 20 minute walk to the closest beach from the tavern). We only had the opportunity to visit one of them, Laki Beach, which was spectacular. The water was very inviting in the scorching heat. If you are feeling adventurous, you can walk for an hour or more to get to other beautiful locations.

Kato Koufonissi is uninhabited, however, it is common for several people to take refuge there so as to experience nature in all its grandeur.
You will find a deserted village and a handful of renovated houses or old structures which now serve as storage spaces for shepherds and fishermen.
Many people visit the island daily for its beautiful vibrant beaches. Quite a few choose to camp overnight in order to experience the dawn in an unspoilt setting.
There is a daily boat service from Pano Koufonissi every hour. It makes two stops. First it calls at Panagia, the old settlement, and then at Nero beach.
The old settlement is named after the chapel of the Virgin, situated very close to the jetty. A pretty, simple Cycladic chapel, it was secretly built in 1651, next to the ruins of a Byzantine church.
Many couples choose to have their wedding ceremony or their child’s christening at the Virgin’s chapel.
During the summer months, the Venetsanos taverna is open.

Camping is an outdoor activity involving overnight stays away from home in a shelter, such as a tent or a caravan.Generally participants leave developed areas to spend time outdoors in nature in pursuit of activities providing them enjoyment. Camping can be enjoyed through all four seasons.
Modern campers frequent natural parks, beaches, wilderness areas, and commercial campgrounds. Camping is a key part of many youth organizations around the world, such as Scouting, which use it to teach both self-reliance and teamwork.
All beaches, seas, mountains, forests, rivers, of this world belong to all of us the mankind. The goal is to teach each other the Love, the Respect and Protection of Nature. For freely travelling with our favorite people, our best friends and our lovers, protecting and cleaning the forests and beaches, enjoying life sometimes without clothing…
GUIDE for free and responsible Camping:
How do we coexist harmoniously with other campers, local residents and nature itself? It is important for campers to learn living together by following, at least, some common rules and habits: We park our cars & bikes away from the beach and we do not obstruct the access to public. We use bags for rubbish, including tissues as animals dig them out. We gather all our rubbish and any extra we find. Wear a plastic bag in your hand in order to make the process less uncomfortable. Determine where the “toilet” is and dig holes at least 30 cm each time or cover them with sand or soil. Instead of toilet paper we use water from the sea in a plastic bottle. We avoid the use of any shampoo and soap, in the water because they pollute the sea, lake or river. We are ready to understand the specific circumstances of the place where we are and to protect it with our presence. We respect the flora and fauna of the region according to the natural conditions. For example, in areas where the sea turtles lay their eggs, the fire can disorient them and their new born, or in areas of dense vegetation fire is very dangerous and forbidden. We have the tent several meters from the waves so we do not obstruct the other campers but mainly not to disturb crabs, turtles, birds. The insects are the residents of the area, we are the guests. We avoid insects with natural repellents, and by keeping the tent zipped closed all day. We do not consider the spot we are staying in as our property, we do not create conditions for permanent settlement. We offer, share, meet each other and create, to the desired extent, conditions of collective living with the other campers. Leave the forest or the beach as found, and if possible, much better.

On Koufonissia space and time dimensions are different from what established theory has led you to expect.
You don’t need a watch. If you have brought it along, put it away in the deepest recess of your luggage.
You will get up when your eyes seek the scenery.
Eat when your taste buds seek delight.
Drink when the spirit is satiated.
You do not need an elaborate wardrobe. Bring your most casual clothes, they will suit the carefree mood of the place.
Walk in the sun or the moonlight and smile at the contented faces that you will see along the way.
Above all, you do not need a car. At last, you will not have to drive during your stay on the island. If you do bring a car, just park it near your accommodation and forget about it. You will certainly agree that the whisper of the sea and the cries of seabirds are more pleasant than the sound of car horns or the groan of engines.
Whatever you seek is right beside you or a short walk away. A pleasant walk or bike ride along the coast will get you everywhere. Alternatively you can use the excursion boats or your own boat even.
The inhabitants will be more than willing to help with anything you might require. Alone is only out of choice here, as everyone and everything come together to a form a harmonious whole.
You will relax, lie on the soft sand, swim in the turquoise water, forget your obligations and love desire, forget the artificial simulation of life in the cities, surrender to the embrace of the sun, dream under countless stars and a friendly smiling moon …
Welcome to Paradise
Koufonisia is a small group of two islets, E of Naxos and W of Amorgos; these are Pano Koufonisi and Kato Koufonisi, and they are separated by a narrow 200 m. wide strait. They were named Koufonisia [meaning Hollow islands] because of the existing huge caves which gave the impression to pirates who viewed them from a distance that the islands were hollow! At a short distance you will see the deserted Keros island. It has been designated as an archaeological site under protection, as major Cycladic Art finds have been unearthed there many a time.
Out of the two islands, Pano Koufonisi is the only populated one. Koufonisia are a favourite destination for those who seek to relax on their holidays and look for sheltered golden sand beaches, small natural pools of turquoise waters, feasts in the original ‘island way’ and seafood fresh from the sea.
