Amba Estate, Ella | Hotels in Sri Lanka
Introduction
#ambaestate #ella #srilanka
Amba Estate is a small organic farm which lies in the picturesque valley of Ambadandenigama in the Southern highlands of Sri Lanka with views across Ella rock. It offers a relaxing holiday experience for those who wish to unwind within a remote and picturesque region of this island. The estate produces a range of artisan teas, coffees, spices and preserves. Go on a tour of the tea estate; visit the tea factory and learn of artisanal tea making; and experience tea tasting (from green teas to lemon grass and black teas). Nature lovers will enjoy bird watching or hiking up to the spectacular pools and rock shelves at the top of Ravana Ella waterfalls. Back at the Estate Bungalow, guests can take in the beautiful scenery, pick your own organic vegetables and learn to cook Sri Lankan curries, or curl up with a good book under a tree surrounded by bird call.
Accommodation
Accommodation at Amba is in a four-bedroom estate bungalow or Clove Cottage, a short stroll away. The simple bedrooms are comfortably furnished and open out to mountain views. Both the bungalow and cottage can be booked by the room or as a whole on a B&B basis. Families with children are welcome. Staff at Amba, from the estate manager to the in-house cook, are all at hand. Amba Estate values environmental conservation and community development and supports several local initiatives.
Amba Estate Bungalow: This refurbished, century old planter’s bungalow has four bedrooms furnished with double beds. There are two shared bathrooms with h/w showers. Up to eight guests can be accommodated. Families with young children are advice to book the whole bungalow. Meals are served in the dining room or in the garden. There is a living room, study room and kitchen.
Clove Tree Cottage: A newly built two-storey cottage. Two double rooms with attached bathrooms on the upper floor are rented by the room. The bedrooms open out to a balcony with mountain views. There is also a ground floor living room that can be used as a single or twin room for those booking the entire cottage. Families with children are advised to book the entire cottage.
Note: Due to the steep staircase leading to the bedrooms at the Clove Tree Cottage, only children 8 years and above can be accommodated at the Cottage. There is no age restriction for the Amba Estate Bungalow.
Facilities
Sri Lankan and western cuisine is served at Amba prepared with herbs and fresh vegetables from their own estate. Food is mainly vegetarian with fish and chicken also available. Freshly baked bread, cakes, and fresh juices are also on offer. Lunch is usually Sri Lankan rice and curries while dinner is a choice of western or local cuisine. There is no set menu at Amba. Discuss your meal preferences with the cook. Packed picnic lunches are available for those going on treks and tours. Guests are welcome to pick their own vegetables and learn to cook Sri Lankan curries.
There are plenty of books and board games at Amba for a rainy day. Two mountain bicycles are available for guests to explore the surrounding valley. For the more adventurous, there are several walks and treks that can be done within the Ambadandenigama valley. There is a charge for the more intensive treks accompanied by an experienced guide. Possible treks include (1) Hike from the Amba Estate to a breathtaking rock pool at the top of the Ravana Ella waterfall where you can have a swim (30 minutes); (2) Hike from Amba to the top of Ella Rock and trek downhill to Ella town (4 hours); (3) Drive to Poonagalla area in Bandarawela and trek 30 minutes to the top of Diyaluma waterfall -Sri Lanka’s second highest waterfall, where there are several natural rock pools for swimming. This area is a nature reserve where you can at times spot wild elephants close up on foot.
Santani Resort - A Luxury Wellness Resort in Sri Lanka
Santani is the ultimate luxury wellness resort, offering mountain view rooms dripping in tropical greenery, swathed in mists and bringing the soft, sweet scent of fresh rain and crushed leaves. Santani is all about disconnecting from your frantic digital life and reconnecting with the primal circadian rhythms that once governed our souls.
Enjoy mouthwatering gourmet wellness cuisine designed to tantalize your taste buds while gazing at the stunning vistas of verdant, gently undulating paddy fields. Sip a refreshing cup of tea; inhale the aroma that evokes a rich history of colonial industry and slowly make your way to the luxury spa, where centuries-old traditions come to fruition in personalized ayurvedic treatments and detox programmes that will help your body and soul become attuned once again to the calls and rhythms of Mother Nature, as they used to be so long ago.
In the morning, attend a personalized yoga session overlooking the valley. Lens your ears to the sounds of the hill country: bird call from the hundreds of birds that make these mountains home; the mournful toll of a bell from a far-off temple; the babbling of a brook that splashes past the resort and downriver; the rustling of leaves as the wind caresses them. As Casey Quackenbush of Time writes, Santani, “help[s] you disconnect. There are no televisions (really) and no wi-fi included (guests can pay extra if they find they can’t live without it), but there is a tri-level spa with a sauna overlooking paddy fields, open-air salt soak pool and wellness packages fusing Ayurveda, yoga and meditation.

It is the lowermost and largest of the eponymous Great ... waterfall located on the....
One of the famous waterfalls in Sri Lanka
You can get a very good view of this water fall on your way to Ella ,the view is spectacular from the road and when you go near the water fall ,lot of people bath here for fun ,but It’s not recommend since the place where you have to go to bath is very slippery and it could be dangerous . Don’t forget to see the famous caves also in Ella town, have to walk some distance by foot and the foot path is not that good, but it’s worth it.

Fine attraction
Useful info: no fee (sited by the road side), easy to reach by 5min bus ride from Ella town centre and return (although I would suggest walking down hill- around 30mins- and then getting the bus back), no toilet facilities, hawkers present selling trinkets and drinks.
A fine, touristy natural attraction whose effect is dependant on recent rains. A nice way to spend an hour or so. There are many other hidden waterfalls dotted throughout the surrounding countryside and these can be found on the myriad of fine walks available.

The Ravana Ella Falls are the widest falls of Sri Lanka. Located near the Wellawaya- Ella Road these 30 feet high falls can be seen from the main road. These dazzling falls are positioned against the striking backdrop of lush green valleys and grand mountains. The remarkable thing about these falls is that the water surges over rocks arranged in 3 steps. These falls can be seen at their best during the wet season when the waterfall is said to looks like “an Areca flower with withering petals”.
These falls are not just beautiful they are historically significant as well.. They are a part of the Ramayana Epic in which the Demon king Ravana kidnapped the princess Sita and brought her to Sri Lanka. Ravana hid her in a cave, concealed by the mountain greenery, behind these falls when Shri Rama was drawing close to Lanka with his army to rescue her. The Ravana Ella cave lies 4500 feet above sea level on the foundation of a cliff in Uva. This is a popular Hindu pilgrimage spot because it is believed that Sita used to bathe in the pool formed from eddying water of the falls.
