ABOUT SEMENGGOH ORANGUTAN REHABILITATION CENTRE:
Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is the largest Orangutan sanctuary in Sarawak (Southern part of Malaysian Borneo). It is one of the few places in the world where you can see Orangutans in a semi-wild environment. A unique experience!
The park, that is more than 700 hectares in size, is home to a total of around 30 orangutans, all varying in age. They can roam freely through the park and will be placed back into the wild once they are ready.
The orangutans are fed twice a day, around 9:00 am and around 3:00 pm. During feeding times, you’ll have the greatest chance of spotting the animals, as they will descend from the trees and head to the special feeding areas.
Semenggoh is located about 24 kilometers from Kuching city, and can easily be reached by bus, taxi or car. The center is open every day from 8.00 am to 12.30 pm and from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm.
A visit to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre should definitely be on your Borneo Trip Itinerary!

In the south-western corner of Malaysian Borneo lies Bako National Park. This unique nature park is known for its great variety of flora and fauna and is definitely worth a visit.
In Bako National Park, the jungle meets the ocean. This means you can admire sandstone cliffs and tropical beaches, but also a mangrove forest and dense jungle.
The most famous residents of Bako are the rare Proboscis monkeys, found only on Borneo.
In addition, the park is home to far more animals, including many other species of monkeys, but also wild boars, snakes, and the remarkable colugo .
Bako National Park is best reached from the city of Kuching, where you can take a bus to Kampong Bako. From here you can book a boat, which will bring you to the park headquarters in 20 minutes. Be prepared for a rough ride!
There are several hiking trails through the park, all of which start at the park headquarters. The routes vary in length and cater to different levels of fitness. They range from 30 minutes to 7 hours.
So, will you be visiting Southern Malaysian Borneo? Then make sure to plan a day trip to Bako National Park!

Bako National Park - nice daytrip to nature
Bako National Park
Address: Muara Tebas Peninsular 93000, Kuching
National Park Opening Hours: 8.00am to 5.00pm Monday – Sunday including Public Holidays
We took a Grab from city to Bako and vice versa at RM23 each way. Took about half an hour. Once reached, you will be escorted to purchase the boat ticket. RM40 per person for 2 ways. We shared with a couple for the entire boat. A little chaotic and disorganized way at the boat ticketing part. You need to come back with the same group of people and also must be the same boat you take to Bako. Why this kind of regulation ? Once done, need to register and purchase the park entrance ticket – RM10 per person.
The boat ride is interesting and after 25 minutes, we reached Bako National Park. Again, need to register at the HQ, about 10 minutes walk from the jetty. There is a small canteen here selling water and simple food. Once done, it is your free time to roam.
There are well marked trails for you to choose ranging from 30 minutes to more than 3 hours. We took the Telok Paku (one hour) trail. It was not difficult but there were steep climbs. A certain level of fitness is required. My wife was unfit to finish the whole trail. If you take the Telok Paku trail, you probably need about 3.5 hours in Bako excluding boat trip. Believe me, there was human traffic jam at the trek while we were there! We also met a family of wild boars along the way.
We spotted long-tailed macaque monkeys, silver leaf monkeys, wild boar, squirrel, monitor lizards and snakes. Unfortunately, we were not able to spot any proboscis monkeys, found only in Borneo. There was also abundant vegetation of dense mangroves forest, swamp forest and dipterocarp forest. Beware those long-tailed monkeys are not shy to steal any food from you.
As the weather was very hot, I would suggest you come be prepared. Long sleeve shirt and pants. Cap and plenty of water. A good pair of shoe. I hurt my heel because I was wearing sandal. Watch out for the annoying blood sucking mozzies.
If you love wildlife and nature, Bako has all. It is an enjoyable daytrip despite the oppressive heat.

City Description:
Kuching, capital of the Malaysian state of Sarawak on the island of Borneo, is a bustling, diverse city of old colonial buildings and modern towers. Along its Sarawak River waterfront are food vendors, shophouses selling handicrafts and an esplanade with views of 19th-century landmarks: The Astana, former palace of the White Rajahs, and Fort Margherita, built to thwart pirates.Nearby is the contemporary, umbrella-roofed New Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Building. Kuching has many temples, mosques and churches. Museums range from the Sarawak State Museum complex, with art, ethnology and natural history collections, to the feline-themed Cat Museum. Kuching is a popular base for exploring Sarawak’s parks and reserves, which shelter endangered wildlife such as proboscis monkeys. Bako National Park offers rugged terrain and walking trails through rainforest and along beaches. The craggy Santubong Peninsula, jutting into the South China Sea, features white-sand beaches and resort areas including Damai.
Weather and Events:
Peak travel periods are Dec–Feb and Jun–Sep. The tropical climate is hot and humid year-round, with a rainy/monsoon season Nov–Mar. Many shops and restaurants close for Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa and the end of Ramadan (all dates vary). Other key events include the Hindu festival of Thaipusam (Jan/Feb); Gawai Dayak (Jun), featuring longhouse feasts and traditional costumes and rituals of the Dayak ethnic group; and the Rainforest World Music Festival (Jul), with local and international performers.

???? Semenggoh Wildlife Centre Kuching - Meet Orang Utan Ritchie
Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is located at Semenggoh, 13th mile Jalan Puncak Borneo, Kuching, Sarawak. It is around 40 minutes drive from the city centre.
It is a natural reserve with many different type of flora and fauna, including many rare bird species and the famous ground for Orang Utans.
The best time to visit Semenggoh is during the morning and afternoon feeding sessions when there is a good chance of seeing semi-wild orang utan returning to the Centre for a free meal.
Feeding takes place between 9.00-10.00am and between 3.00-3.30 pm.
Although there are many Orang Utan in the Reserve, but they don't come out everytime. Since they are semi-wild, you can't force them to appear. You will be in luck if Orang Utan came out for feeding at your first visit.
During this visit we are lucky to meet the dominant (alpha) male Orang Utan - Ritchie. Ritchie is the boss of the 26 orangutans living in the reserve.

Borneo Wildlife - A wonderful journey through Sarawak and Sabah
A wonderful photo journey through Borneo Wildlife trough Sarawak and Sabah.
During my journey through Sarawak & Sabah (Borneo -Malaysia) I visit Bako NP, Semongoh Orangutan Rehabilatation Centre, Mulu NP, Kinabatangan River, and Sepilok Orangutan centre.
The wildlife is amazing and I was lucky enough to see Orangutans, Pygmy Elephants, Proboscis Monkey, Pigtail Makaken, Bats, Crocodiles, Birds, Snakes, Otters, Swallows, Insects, Green Pit Viper and Flying Lemur.
Ben Fogle's Sarawak Adventures - Matang Wildlife Centre
Join adventurer and explorer Ben Fogle as he visits orangutans at the Matang Wildlife Centre in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Matang is located close to Sarawak's capital city, Kuching, and is one of the most beautiful rainforest regions on the planet according to Ben. It is fascinating to watch Ben being taught how to look after young orangutans -- the Centre has a tiered system of teaching the orangutans the skills they need to live back in the wild, one day at a time. The Heart To Heart Foundation runs several different eco-tourism programmes which involve members of the public and our film shows Ben helping feed the orangutans. At the end of his visit, Ben receives his certificate and T-shirt for all his efforts. Visiting Matang is definitely a must do activity when visiting Sarawak. Sarawak offers unforgettable travel experiences. Visitors can see amazing wildlife, trek through the rainforest, swim and dive in crystal clear waters as well as enjoying superb local cuisine and accommodation.
