Honduras: La Ceiba
Surrounded by pristine Caribbean coastline and Pico Bonito National Park, its no wonder the city of La Ceiba is considered the ecotourism capital of Honduras. Travelers to this northern coast destination discover outdoor adventures for every interest, including what many consider to be Central Americas best whitewater rafting on the Río Cangrejal. Cuero y Salado, one of Honduras most popular nature refuges, allows up-close views of native wildlife and unspoiled landscape. Visitors can also trace the towns historic beginnings during the banana industry boom of the late 1800s. Just off the coast of La Ceiba, the Cayos Cochinos marine reserve features spectacular snorkeling and tranquil island beaches.

In professional alliance with tour operator Gilberto Arita, our ground partner in San Pedro Sula since 1992, U.S. Dive Travel offers 2-day or 3-day guided tours of Las Ruinas de Copan, the most magnificent complex of Mayan ruins in Central America.
First discovered by Spanish explorers in 1570, the ancient city of Copan sustained a bustling culture in the lush jungles of highland Honduras -- powerful in both economy & architecture -- from about 2000 BC until about 900 AD. More than 25,000 people flourished in the city center & surrounding jungles during the Golden Age of Copan's dynasties -- from about 300 to 900 AD.
Scores of archeologists have worked these Copan digs for decades, restoring many buildings, temples, homes, arenas, sculptures & towering statues called stellae. The Copan Ruins are truly among the most visually compelling ancient sites in the Americas, & a must-see for any history buff visiting Honduras. Over the last 20 years, hundreds of our U.S. Dive Travel clients have enjoyed rounding off their Guanaja dive vacations with a relaxing-yet-fascinating 2- or 3-day guided tour of the Copan Ruins.

A visit to Los Guatuzos Nature Reserve
You reach Los Guatuzos Nature Reserve by boat on a small peaceful river. For a video of the river trip, please click here: .
The Caiman are protected for their first five years, after which time they are released in the river. The turtle eggs hatch in the safety of the reserve. In the right seaons, you can see up to twenty thousand little ones. They, too are released into the river.
This ecosystem is fragile. The canal to be built by the Chinese through Lake Nicaragua to allow passage for the largest shis man has ever constructed could pose a serious threat to this fragile ecosystem. The route was changed from one day to the next. Clearly, this did not allow time for an environmental impact study to be completed. The environment isn't everyone's priority. (Think MONEY). With ever-dwindling natural resources, it is mine. I hope it is yours, too.
