Lisbon - what makes Portugal's capital city so attractive? | DW Documentary
Lisbon, Portugal’s White City, is an old multifaceted city in Europe. Lisbon has experienced many periods of prosperity and has survived many crises.
But what makes Lisbon so attractive today – especially among young people? A film crew met a range of mainly young people in Lisbon, and asked them about their relationship to the Portuguese capital city. Lisbon’s history has been significantly shaped by its harbor, which made it a central hub of trade in Europe and the starting point for voyages of discovery and conquest in the late Middle Ages. Vasco da Gama embarked on his last trip to India from Lisbon, and enjoyed a hero’s welcome on his return in 1499. From Bairro Alto and the National Museum of Ancient Art to the Tower of Belém and countless palaces, churches and hotels, Lisbon has a lot to offer tourists. But what makes the Portuguese capital such an attractive destination for young people in the present day? The friendly and carefree nature of the Portuguese people, says one blogger, who quit his job in a bank in order to photograph his city for an image campaign. The incomparable light of Lisbon, says a city historian committed to the conservation of Portugal’s colorful glazed wall tiles: azulejos. The sense of melancholy, adds a singer, who is just as enthusiastic about modern electronic music as she is about the traditional fado, which she herself performs on stage. Culinary specialties made from locally fished seafood are the secret, says an acclaimed chef and craftsman. And for an avid surfer, the city’s appeal lies in the impressive waves along the coastline.

Portugal Sintra, A Fairy Tale Town
This is Sintra, a mysterious place in Portugal just outside of Lisbon
Links to the locations and more about the prices below ↓↓↓
As we have been traveling through Portugal the past few weeks, we decided to stop in Sintra, just half an hour away from Lisbon to shoot a video about Quinta da Regaleira, a very unique place in Europe.
We were in Sintra for nearly a week. The city seems very small on the map but if you want to see each castle and its surrounding gardens and walk through the city also, while having some time to breath and have a relaxed meal, making it all in a day is impossible.
Here is a link to the city's official travel site ( this is where we took most of our information)
EXPLORE...
Food:
What you need to try while in Portugal :
Bacalhau, which is a codfish dish with which the Portuguese are ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED!
Alheira de Mirandela, which is a sausage stuffed with bread and very cheap. Doesn’t sound like much, but give it a try, you’ll probably like it!
Pastel de nata, well what can I say, I am obsessed with pastries so this is a MUST. They have a lot more than this one, but if you’re not into sweets, please give this one a try *hint* it’s crunchy and creamy at the same time, so yeah, deliciooous!
As for places to eat, we heard that these one are really good (as I have mentioned earlier I was too full after eating too many pastries to try to stop for a full meal)
Curral dos Caprinos
AZENHAS DO MAR - this one has also a gorgeous view just by the ocean
Culture: How to act like a local
Hike, go to cafes and enjoy the gardens. Really the locals here really take advantage of the beautiful free gardens surrounding the castles.
Nightlife: When and where to go…
Yeah, about that… if you’re a city person I would say there is nothing here that qualifies as a real club so heading back to Lisbon seems worth it if you wanna party.
Nature: Wildlife, parks, and beaches
THIS IS THE PLACE FOR IT.
Sintra has both forest and beaches. The beach is gorgeous and relaxing, but you can find that outside of Sintra also. If you come here save your time for the gardens and the castles. Let yourself enjoy the royal palaces for a while, it is said to bring harmony into one's heart, why else would the royal family come here so often?
Transport:
There are three ways to move around: bus, tuk-tuk or walk. The bus is the cheapest but takes an incredible amount of time, so go for the tuk-tuk if you don’t feel like walking for hours. We really enjoyed the walk, but we had a lot of time on our hands.
Budget:
This is a very cheap place to visit, depending on your accommodation choices. Quinta da Regaleira is the cheapest one to visit and most fun because is more of an adult mystery house, but the others are equally beautiful just slightly pricier. With a minimum of 27 euros and a maximum of 120 euros, the accommodation really makes a difference. The season your are visiting can also play a big part in this, plan ahead- that always saves money! Purchasing tickets online saves you 5%.
ACTIVITIES AND SIGHTSEEING
Main attractions:

Hi guys! I'm Maria from Travel Guide Lisbon and today I'm going to talk about the Lisbon Zoo also called Jardim Zoológico in Portuguese. So if you like visiting zoos, if you like animals or you just need a break from the city and half a day or a full day in nature, or if you have kids, I would definitely recommend the Lisbon Zoo for you.
00:23 - 02:47
So what to expect from the Lisbon Zoo? What is included in the Lisbon Zoo? First of all it has more than 2000 animals. There are around 300 different species of animals in the Lisbon Zoo. So I would say it's quite diverse. You don't only find the normally expected animals like elephants and lions but there are some really rare, exotic and endangered species in the Lisbon Zoo such as the red panda or the sumatran tiger because the Lisbon Zoo participates in more wildlife and conservation projects. You can also contribute to that for example by sponsoring an animal in the Lisbon Zoo so that's quite nice. One of the hightlights of the Lisbon Zoo is the dolphin and seal show. There are also free flying bird shows, lizard and reptile presentations, a little petting zoo for children where they can feed and caress animals. There is a little train running across the Lisbon Zoo. And the other highlight is the cable car which is an open car hanging over the Lisbon Zoo. You go around all the Lisbon Zoo. Particularly interesting when you're over the tigers or the rhinoceros. So yes all these attractions and shows, they are included in the price of the entry except for the little train. That is for additional charge. But all the other attractions and feedings, pelican feedings, dolphin shows, everything, cable car. They're all included in the entrance price of the Lisbon Zoo. (…)
02:48 - 03:48
How much time do you need to visit the Lisbon Zoo? Well, it is doable in half a day, you can manage to see the animals and some shows in half a day, and if you have half a day, I would suggest to come in the afternoon, because for example, the lizard and reptile show only runs in the summer, and only runs in the afternoon. Otherwise, all the shows and feedings, there is one in the morning and one in the afternoon, so if you come in the morning, it's also not bad, you can make the most of it except the reptile show really. But if you would like to take it easy, and if you have little kids especially then, you just want to visit all the animals calmly, chill out, have a nice picnic in the picnic area, and check out all the attractions, the cable car, the mini train and all the shows, then you can easily spend a full day.
03:49 - 04:36
What is the price? So the entrance fee of the Lisbon Zoo for an adult costs 22 euros. A child pays 14.50. And it is free from zero to three. However if you have the Lisbon Card, that will give you 15 percent off the price so that would mean around 18.70 for an adult. But don't forget that this price includes all the attractions inside the Lisbon Zoo such as the dolphin show, the seal show, the bird show, the different animal feedings and the cable car. The only attractions for additional charge is the little train that's going around the Lisbon Zoo.
04:37 - 05:38
So how to get to the Lisbon Zoo? Lisbon Zoo is located quite close to the airport and also very close to the Lisbon city center, around five minutes from city center. Lisbon Zoo is very easily accessible by public transportation. The easiest I would say is to take the blue metro line and get off at the stop that's called Jardim Zoologico. The entrance is just in front of the metro stop. You can also get here by many buses. I have listed all the buses on our website, travelguidelisbon.com. (…)
05:39 - 06:15
- And just a little tip for you if you have small children, I would definitely recommend to bring your buggy with you because it includes a little bit of walking and little scooters and bikes are not allowed inside the zoo. But if you don't bring your buggy, you can also rent for an additional charge a little zoo car. So that could be also fun for the children. And of course don't forget sunscreen, sunhat, sunglasses, and plenty of water with you. And comfy shoes and camera of course.

The Peneda-Gerês National Park (Portuguese: Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês), also known simply as Gerês, is the only national park in Portugal (although many natural parks, protected landscapes, and reserves exist across the nation). It is located in the Norte region, in the northwest of Portugal, specifically in the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, and Vila Real. The park was created on 8 May 1971 due to its national and international scientific interest, with the aim to protect the soil, water, flora, fauna, and landscape, while preserving its value to the existent human and natural resources. Education and tourism are also goals of the park.
