Southeast Asia at its best. 85% of the country is untouched nature, widespread forests, steep mountains and wide river valleys, but also cool high plateaus and savannahs. The primeval forests support a fauna like something out of a fairy tale, with elephants, tigers, leopards, and some of the rarest animal species on the planet. Species never seen by humans are discovered at regular intervals. In recent decades, the few large mammals to be described for the first time were all found in Indochina and experts assume that most of them are at home in Laos: wild oxen such as the saola and kuprey or the truong son munjak. No outsider has ever seen a living specimen of the latter; its existence is only known indirectly, through skeletons, horns and bag that are occasionally found in remote villages. And there is the Mekong, one of the last untamed rivers on Earth. Fed by hundreds of tributaries, it is one of the richest freshwater systems on the planet, comparable only with the Congo or Amazon. This is where the Mekong catfish lives. At 3 meters long and weighing in at 300 kilograms, this monster must be the largest freshwater fish on earth.

Conservation linked livelihoods in Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area, Lao PDR
The Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area, located in the north-east of Laos, is the nation’s largest protected area and is rich in biodiversity. To encourage surrounding communities to protect their natural resources, livelihood activities have been developed to provide a direct link with conservation outcomes. Examples include: (1) developing a wildlife friendly shade-grown coffee enterprise; (2) eco-tourism activities that provide financial benefits based on wildlife encounters by visitors; and (3) employing local people as rangers to protect natural resources from exploitation and to ensure compliance with natural resource legislation.
This video was created as part of the AFD short film competition, to celebrate together the 25th anniversary of AFD in Laos.

Did I Just Travel Laos? // Luang Prabang and the Effects of Tourism
Luang Prabang, Laos is a special place. The natural beauty and the religious architecture make it a truly unique place to travel. Backpackers felt this years ago. The people of UNESCO recognized this and declared it a UNESCO World Heritage City. Since then, tourism has boomed. From 1997 to 2016, the number of tourists visiting Luang Prabang grew 890%. It couldn't be stopped... The town changed.
This video discusses what tourism does to a place - both the positives and negatives. I discuss how it effects the local people, the culture, and the tourists.
In many ways, tourism is a double edged sword.
From the tourist’s point of view - I want to experience an authentic culture, but the places that have the attractions, the ones people go to and fall in love with, they’re often setup for tourists and I find myself experiencing the tourist industry of a town, rather than an authentic, in this case, Laos town.
From the point of view of the local - tourism took away one of the biggest worries that the people had - money. Tourists have brought tons of money into the city, into the pockets of the people. They’ve created jobs. They’ve made lives easier. But it can also destroy a town’s identity.
A booming tourism market can drive out locals and have them replaced with developers.
It’s ironic - the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization AKA UNESCO - their whole point is to preserve the culture of sites and cities. And yet, you could argue that they’re changing the cities into tourist places. It does help preserve aspects of the culture, but it erases other aspects.
For example, the fisherman who goes out every morning and uses the traditional net to catch some fish, sell them at the market, and feed his family. He might find it more lucrative to use his boat to take some travelers on a tour. Maybe that traditional net gets tossed aside and we don’t see it anymore on the rivers around Luang Prabang. That’s just an example that I made up, but you get the idea. Now, we can hardly blame the man - he’s making more money and not having to work as hard, so it’s a positive thing for him, but that part of the culture was erased by tourism.
Of course, the tourist industry has also helped preserve Luang Prabang’s culture. It’s brought money into preserving temples and other traditional buildings. Since the industry has sprung up, traditional Laos architecture has actually experienced a resurgence. Tourists want to stay in a place with that vibe - so many of the restaurants and guesthouses have sort of de-modernized and went back to traditional materials and architectural styles.
Now there is a bit of a fake-ness to that.
I’d describe Luang Prabang as a boutique kind of town. Many of the hotels are well decorated, they’re not ornate, but they’re far more high-end than what you’ll find in other Laos towns. It doesn’t represent the country well. Laos is the most bombed country in the world. There’s a lot of struggle going on there. There’s a lot of poverty. If someone only went to Luang Prabang and they let that represent the country, they would have a completely wrong view of Laos.
So does that make Luang Prabang a bad place to visit? I mean, there’s a reason people go there. It’s stunning. It’s filled with religious architecture. There are 34 monasteries around. There’s a peacefulness that is still present despite all the foreign visitors. I liked it. I enjoyed the 3 or 4 days I spent there, but I would recommend going to other places in Laos. Get off the tourist trail a bit.

We went exploring the nature attractions, but could only find one waterfall. But it was the most powerful waterfall Ive ever seen :)

Living Land Laos | preserving culture
Laut Lee, director of Living Land Laos in Luang Prabang, took us on a tour of their permaculture traditional farm and showed us the way their culture is banding together to preserve healthy food options and keep the ancient knowledge alive for future generations.
You can join a tour with them 7 days a week and learn the 14 steps to making rice. They teach you hands on skills such as seed selection, metal working, plowing, handicrafts from natural plants, planting and eating many kinds of foods developed from rice even drinking rice wine.

Today we ventured out of town. We rented a motorbike in Luang Prabang and headed up to Kuang Si waterfall. It was worth the 40-minute drive, this is the best waterfall in the world! (in our opinion)
We also took the motorbike to Pak Ou caves, also about 40-minutes from Luang Prabang. The first cave was really interesting, the second... well, watch and see!
We are loving our time in Laos to far. Laos is such a beautiful country to travel in.

NOTE: Jaew Kee Pa - the best dish of the day, literally translates to Chili Poop Fish. However, I don't think there's any poop in the dip, but it mostly consisted of fish eggs. The name however, is true, and it's the dish the owner told us, if you haven't eaten it, YOU haven't been to Luang Prabang yet.
We set off in the morning to have an ultimate one day in Luang Prabang - and it turned out to indeed be one of the best days of our time in the city. Luang Prabang is a gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage city, full of culture, natural beauty and delicious food.

Mount Phousi - Right in the heart of Luang Prabang is Mount Phousi, and it’s one of the best places to get an birds eye view of Luang Prabang, especially at sunrise. We headed off at about 6 am. Price - 10,000 LAK ($1.20)
Pho / Khao Soi Wat Sen - One of the ultimate Lao dishes to eat when you’re in Luang Prabang is khao soi, a noodle dish of wonders that’s one of the most soothing breakfast options. Just across the street from Wat Sen, or Wat Sene temple, is a local spot that’s known to serve some of the best khao soi in the city. Khao soi - 20,000 LAK ($2.39)
Saffron Coffee - There’s no better place to drink a cup of coffee in Luang Prabang than Saffron. Not only is their coffee amazing, but they source all local Luang Prabang beans from sustainable sources, normally local families that grow the beans.
Americano large - 20,000 LAK ($2.39)
Sai oua - 5,000 LAK ($0.60) per piece - Not a day goes by in Luang Prabang, Laos, that we didn’t have some sai oua, the Laotian version of an herb sausage. Her version is indeed one of the best I’ve ever had in my life.
Som Tam - Papaya Salad Restaurant - Right in the old heritage center of Luang Prabang old town is this Lao papaya salad restaurant. You’ll find a full menu of different pounded Lao foods, all of which are pretty good. Her green papaya salad was a little on the sweeter side, but her dried meats were phenomenal.
Total price- 155,000 LAK ($18.53)
Soop pak - with cashew tree leaves - Additionally, across the street we found an Aunty who was cooking soop pak, a Lao dish, this time with cashew tree leaves. It was the highlight of the meal.
Wat Xieng Thong - 20,000 LAK ($2.39) - One of the top temples to visit in Luang Prabang is Wat Xieng Thong, one of the most important temples in Laos. It’s well worth a visit, and it’s located at the end of the Luang Prabang peninsula.
Xieng Thong Phonsavahn Restaurant - This was not only the greatest meal of the day, but this was one of the best Lao food meals I had in all of Luang Prabang. It’s a gem of a restaurant, located right along the Mekong river. You’ll find Mekong river fish mixed into salads like koi pa, and a dish called jaew kee pa - a mix of chilies and fish eggs to eat with sticky rice. The owner told us, if you haven’t eaten jaew kee pa, “you haven’t been to Luang Prabang yet.” And he was so right!
Total price - 210,000 LAK ($25.10)
Luang Prabang Night Market - One of the top things to do in Luang Prabang as written everywhere is walk around the Luang Prabang night market. I have to say, it’s a great place to walk around, and the shakes are always good.

Before motorbiking through Laos, I drove this motorbike through Vietnam, crossed the Pacific Ocean on sailing boats as crew member and visited The Unites States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, The Marquesas Islands, Tahiti, The Kingdom Of Niue, Rarotonga, Tonga, Fiji, some other small islands and ended up in New Zealand. In New Zealand I cycled 3.000km from top to bottom. After that I flew to Vietnam to start this motorbike tour. Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi by Motorbike and into Laos

Four amigos met and formed SOS on the Laos Slow Boat. The epic journey starts in Luang Prabang where 4 motorbikes are sourced. The gang then heads down to Vang Vieng for tubing. SOS then heads East to cross the border into Vietnam.
SOS underestimated the conditions. Mother nature, the wildlife and mechanical failure were all against them. Will they survive this adventure? Subscribe to find out.

Laos Jungle Adventure: Trekking in Luang Namtha | Fun With Chun
One of my favourite parts of Laos was here in Luang Namtha, kayaking and hiking our way to jungle adventure, village visits, and amazing views. We spent a night camping in the jungle, met some excellent people, and conquered a STEEP climb.
Tourists aren't allowed to enter Luang Namtha's national park without a local guide, so we chose The Hiker as our tour operator. Our main guide Phonsa was an absolute dream and knew so much about the local plants and wildlife; I highly, HIGHLY recommend The Hiker if you're planning a trek in Luang Namtha.
