Dominica (/dəˈmɪˌnɪkə/ or /ˌdɒmɪˈniːkə/; French: Dominique; Island Carib: Wai‘tu kubuli), officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is a sovereign island country.[8] The capital, Roseau, is located on the leeward side of the island. It is part of the Windward Islands in the Lesser Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. The island lies south-southeast of Guadeloupe and northwest of Martinique. Its area is 750 km2 (290 sq mi), and the highest point is Morne Diablotins, at 1,447 m (4,747 ft) in elevation. The population was 71,293 at the 2011 census.[5]
The island was originally inhabited by the Kalinago and later colonised by Europeans, predominantly by the French from the 1690s to 1763. Columbus is said to have passed the island on Sunday, 3 November 1493, and the island's name is derived from the Latin for Sunday. Great Britain took possession in 1763 after its defeat of France in the Seven Years' War, and it gradually established English as the official language. The island republic gained independence in 1978.
Its name is pronounced with stress falling either on second syllable of the word, after the Latin word dŏmĭnĭcă lordly, or on the third syllable, after the French name Dominique. Dominica has been nicknamed the Nature Isle of the Caribbean for its natural environment.[9] It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity, as evidenced by the world's second-largest hot spring, called Boiling Lake. There are xeric areas in some of the western coastal regions, but heavy rainfall occurs inland. The Sisserou parrot, also known as the imperial amazon and found only on Dominica, is the island's national bird and featured on the national flag. Dominica's economy depends on tourism and agriculture.

THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN DOMINICA
Dominica is fast becoming my favourite country in the Caribbean. Unlike a lot of other islands around with beautiful pristine beaches and packed holiday resorts, Dominica is a million miles away from that.
It’s this wild, rugged island that looks straight out of Jurassic Park. Honestly, everywhere you look is just so lush and green. I guess that’s why it’s known as “the nature island of the Caribbean”.
Well, if you’re wondering what to do in Dominica then you’ve come to the right place. Check out my video to see the best things to do in Dominica!

Dominica Island
See the best accommodations Dominica, officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is an island nation in the Caribbean Sea. To the north-northwest lies Guadeloupe, to the southeast Martinique. Its size is 754 square kilometres (291 sq mi) and the highest point in the country is Morne Diablotins, which has an elevation of 1,447 metres (4,747 ft). The Commonwealth of Dominica has an estimated population of 72,500. The capital is Roseau.
Dominica has been nicknamed the Nature Isle of the Caribbean for its seemingly unspoiled natural beauty. It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity, as evidenced by the world's second-largest boiling lake. The island features lush mountainous rainforests, home of many rare plant, animal, and bird species. There are xeric areas in some of the western coastal regions, but heavy rainfall can be expected inland. The Sisserou Parrot (also known as the Imperial Amazon), the island's national bird, is featured on the national flag. Dominica's economy is heavily dependent on both tourism and agriculture.
Christopher Columbus named the island after the day of the week on which he spotted it, a Sunday (dominica in Latin), November 3, 1493. In the next hundred years after Columbus' landing, Dominica remained isolated, and even more Caribs settled there after being driven from surrounding islands as European powers entered the region. France formally ceded possession of Dominica to the United Kingdom in 1763. The United Kingdom then set up a government and made the island a colony in 1805.
The emancipation of African slaves occurred throughout the British Empire in 1834, and, in 1838, Dominica became the first British Caribbean colony to have a legislature controlled by an African majority. In 1896, the United Kingdom reassumed governmental control of Dominica, turning it into a Crown colony. Half a century later, from 1958 to 1962, Dominica became a province of the short-lived West Indies Federation. In 1978, Dominica became an independent nation. ( source Wikipedia )
Untouched Caribbean Island. Can't Believe This Exists ???? Explore Dominica in the Caribbean ????????
In this video we spend a few days exploring the untouched and not overly well known Caribbean island of Dominica! Dominica is known as the nature island, with lots of waterfalls and rivers (365, one for every day of the year!).
We start things off with a quick tour of our hotel, where we are staying in the penthouse. This hotel is an adventure hotel and a great place to stay if you’re looking to plan lots of fun adventures around the island during your stay. You can find more about it here:
After setting off from the hotel to explore the island, and getting over a bit of motion sickness (the roads are very windy and even those that aren’t use to motion sickness can be affected, some prepared), we stop at the Emerald Pool. It’s about a 10 minute easy hike to get there and once you arrive you’ll encounter a lovely waterfall where you can also swim. This is definitely the place where we encountered more tourists than anywhere else!
Next up we had the most beautiful canoe ride through Indian River (a scene from Pirate’s of the Caribbean was filmed here), where we encountered loads of different types of birds, crabs and wildlife. Unfortunately it got dark very quickly and we had to stop filming.
We picked things up the next day at Morne Bruce where we had a great view overlooking the main city in Dominica, Roseau. We also make a stop at the botanical gardens to see a bus that was flattened by a tree many years ago in a hurricane and is now referred to as David and Goliath. We then spend a little bit of time exploring Roseau.
Later we make our way to a lake high up in the mountains, called Freshwater Lake where we fly the drone to get a better view.
Lastly we head to Trafalgar water falls to view the two side by side waterfalls affectionally known and mama and papa.
ABOUT DOMINICA ????????
Dominica is a mountainous Caribbean island nation with natural hot springs and tropical rainforests. Morne Trois Pitons National Park is home to the volcanically heated, steam-covered Boiling Lake. The park also encompasses sulphur vents, the 65m-tall Trafalgar Falls and narrow Titou Gorge. To the west is Dominica’s capital, Roseau, with colorful timber houses and botanic gardens.

Dominca, The Nature Island: Astonishing number of fruits in small garden!
This video was taken on June 29th 2013 when I visited the village of Castle Bruce with Pepper from Pepper Tours. The house in this video was recently sold for about 50,000 $US and sits on a small parcel of land, about 100 feet by 100 feet. The house is in the process of being renovated and has a beautiful view of the Atlantic ocean. What was really astonishing was the variety of fruits growing on the small parcel of land. The young man in the video, Kurt (24 years old), grew up and lives across from this house in the village of Castle Bruce. He shows describes all the fruits and plants on the land, which include several mango trees, pineapple, bread fruit, goose berries, a large and small cinnamon tree, several small lime trees, golden apples, cherries, sugar cane, guava cherries, papaya, star fruit, noni fruit, avocado, etc. Can you imagine having so much in a small garden? Dominica is truly an astonishingly beautiful place. I was blown away! Dominica has the freshest, healthiest, largest variety of fruits, vegetables, spices and herbs I have ever seen growing in such abundance. The land is very fertile and nobody ever uses chemicals of any kind on the land or produce. Truly bio!
Dominca has few beaches and even fewer with white sand. Most are dark volcanic sand or rock beaches. This keeps away the hordes of tourists. There are no major hotel chains and all the hotels are small and run by people who love and respect the country and the beauty of the nature that surrounds them.
Dominica is an eco tourist destination with miles of hiking trails through lush, thick, beautiful jungles. No dangerous animals or critters of any sort. Many humming birds, parrots, iguanas and cute lizards of all kinds. Just a stunning place to be!
The people are very friendly, and life goes at about a third of the pace in the western world. Everyone is smiling, singing, dancing, chatting and enjoying life. There are many centenarians because of the clean and pure environment. No slums and no abject poverty. With fruits all over the place... mangoes and oranges hanging in abundance on the trees on the roadsides, nobody ever goes hungry in this beautiful country.
A big thank you to Kurt and Pepper.
If you are going to visit Dominica, you need to hire Pepper. He grew up on the island and knew every place to go and see. He shows me places that most tourists never get to see. He was fantastic! pepperscottage.com

The Archbold Tropical Research and Education Center (ATREC) is a 198-acre (79 ha) tract of rainforest and agricultural land managed by a Dominican not-for-profit organization in partnership with Clemson University and an international consortium of universities. The Center, located in the Commonwealth of Dominica, West Indies, was created in 1989 by a gift to Clemson from the late conservationist and philanthropist John D. Archbold.
It was his vision that international students and researchers work with Dominican citizens to address pressing land use concerns. The Archbold Tropical Research and Education Center enables us to study the entire spectrum of ecological, economic, and social factors that influence human relationships with tropical ecosystems.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Dominica.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Dominica's lush tropical landscape is home to many rare plants and animals. Among those is Dominica's national bird, the Imperial Amazon or Sisserou Parrot, which is also featured right in the center of their national flag. As of 2010, the Imperial Amazon was on the Red List of endangered species, with a population between merely 150 to 250 birds.
2. In Dominica there is the second largest in the world “Boiling lake”, and also many sulphur springs, freshwater lakes, waterfalls and rivers. The hot spring is approximately 200 feet (60 metres) across and is located barely six and a half miles from the capital city of Roseau. A flooded fumarole, the center of the lake is hot enough to be actively boiling, and even at the edges, temperatures are near the boiling point.
3. The first island sighted by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the New World was Dominica at which he arrived Sunday or Dominica in Latin, on 3 November 1493.
4. Dominica takes the first place among the best Islands to visit in the Caribbean and among the top of ten worldwide, according to rankings compiled by experts from the “National Geographic Traveler”. Dominica is among the five best places in the world for diving and among the ten places – for whale watching. Dominica has two marine reservations, four national parks, one of which was included in the UNESCO list of the World Heritage List as the only one of its kind in the Eastern Caribbean.
5. The capital of this wonderful country is Roseau; it had a population of 15,000 in 2014.
6. For many years, despite claiming the island as theirs, the French made no attempt to settle it. In fact, one of the only (recorded) Europeans who even visited Dominica was a French missionary by the name of Raymond Breton, and he didn't do so until the mid 17th century. In 1660 the English and French agreed to leave Dominica and St. Vincent unsettled, letting the Caribs continue to live unmolested and declaring the island neutral territory. The first European settlers to come to the island arrived as a result of 'La Gaoulé,' a revolt of poor white smallholders on Martinique. 12 years later, the French government took control of the island, officially folding it into the empire.
7. The second Pirates film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and the third film At World's End all had major scenes filmed in Dominica.
