Thank you Sri Lanka for the most beautiful start of our travels. We fell in love with Sri Lanka's nature, it's people, animals and diversity.
Our western suspicion turned into great conversations with strangers, mostly using single english words and our hands.
The world is full of friendly people - and we met so many of them in Sri Lanka.

Isinbassagala Ruwangiri Raja Maha Viharaya, Medawachchiya (2018) – 1 of 3
About 1.4 km off Medawachchiya on the A9 (Kandy-Jaffna) highway, this beautiful and historical temple known as “Isinbassagala” is located. The name loosely translates into “The Rock that the Sages Came from”. This temple complex was built by the King Devanampiyathissa (250-210 BC) right after the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka. Today what you see at the top of this rock is recent constructions done in the 1st half of the 20th century. This new stupa has been built on the same location where the original stupa had been. Excavations on this stupa area have recovered an ancient Naga Gala (Cobra Carved Stone) and some Sri Pathul Gala (Foot Print of Buddha).
This temple represents a two generations of worship culture. According to the sources, Snake Stone is an object of worship of the Naga (Cobra) tribes which was used before the arrival of Buddhism in the country. Later the temple has been built on the same grounds. The Sri Pathul Gala shows this era as this was the first representation of Buddha before the Buddha statues were built.
In addition to the temple, the view from this rock is breathtaking. You can get a 360 degree view of the whole area from this point. One of the most remarkable attractions is the Isinbassagala Tank located off the main temple and is a bird paradise.

I’ve done this video to make other human beings aware of the beauty of this place and please don’t misuse this information in order to ruin this place. I’ve spent so much of time/money bringing this to you so that you may enjoy it. However I’ve a very kind and humble request from you all.
Should you ever visit this place, you’re kindly requested to adhere to the following in order to save our Mother Nature (essentially Our Country) not only for the future generations but for the current one as well:
* Avoid careless/reckless/irresponsible/money-oriented/mega tour groups or organizers.
* Travel in smaller groups as Mother Nature can’t afford so many footprints at once.
* Minimize the use of polythene/plastic and do bring back if you have to take any with you.
* Don’t litter and even if it’ bio-degradable, please bring it back and dispose of the garbage properly and responsibly. Because no matter what it is, it will still be alien to that environment.
* Use reusable water bottles so that you don’t have to keep buying plastic ones. It’ll not only save you money but will help save nature massively.
* Remain quiet and vigilant. Don’t disturb the tranquility of the nature. Instead savor it.
* Try and bring if you spot any litter/garbage left behind by other careless travellers.
* Don’t light fires unnecessarily and do try to use portable cookers instead of using firewood when camping. The increase usage of firewood leads to more deforestation even at a smaller scale.
* Don’t bring any plants back with you or break any plants/branches unnecessarily.
* Don’t walk off the designated footpath.
* Don’t use soap/detergent/shampoo when bathing in natural streams as they’d only lead to the contamination of those pure water sources and elimination of wildlife species.
* Don’t do anything that harms the Mother Nature.

Mahakanadarawa Wewa (Mahakanadarawa Tank), Anuradhapura (2018)
Mahakanadarawa Wewa is a large reservoir built during the Anuradhapura Kingdom by damming the Kanadara Oya which is the main tributary of the Malwathu Oya River.
This reservoir has been called Kana Wapi and Kanadiyadora in the ancient to be built by King Mahasen the Great (276-303). It is reported that King Sena II (853-887) had built a weir at a place called Kattaththa and diverted water to Kanadara Oya through a 12km canal to increase the supply of water to Mahakanadarawa Wewa.
The embankment of the tank is 2.8 km long and covers 34,000 acres (13.76 sq. km) when full. The total water holding capacity is 36 250 acre feet (44,713,717 cubic meters).
Unfortunately the Anuradhapura–Trincomalee road is built across the tank bisecting it to two.

Kalthota Doovili Ella / Walawe Ganga East Falls | දූවිලි ඇල්ල / කල්තොට දූවිලි ඇල්ල (2014) - 3 of 3
The Doowili Ella is ensconced some three kilometres off Balangoda - Kalthota main road and is accessible through a tarred way running across thick jungle profusely scattered with some of the rarest trees and bushes endemic to Sri Lanka.
The turn off to the waterfall lies approx 25 km from Balangoda town or 3.5 km off the Kaltota town. Travel about 2 km on this route and then you need to walk about 300 meters to see the falls.
This waterfall is also known as Walawe Ganga (East) Fall.

Trek from Udaweriya to Bambarakanda via Devil's Staircase (2018) - 3 of 8
The trek through the Devil’s Staircase along Kalupahana-Bambarakanda-Udaweriya-Ohiya is one of the most popular trekking and jeep tracks in the hills of Sri Lanka. The difficulty levels and the spectacular view of the green mountains of Sri Lanka has made this a hikers’ paradise but only the most ardent hikers will undertake this 13 km hike.
The total length of the trek from Kalupahana off A4 to Ohiya Railay Station is 22km but usually the trek is about 18km as many start this from Bambarakanda Rest near the Bambarakanda Falls and trek to Ohiya or vice versa.
Most prefer to take the night mail from Colombo and start the trek from Ohiya as it’s generally going downhill.
This trail goes over old dilapidated estate roads through many estates, especially the famous Udaweriya Estate. You can also visit the Horton Plains as this goes along the Ohiya-Horton Plains Road too.
I’ve done this trek before but this time decided to attempt it from another way as we’d done two treks in the previous days. The first was from Haldummulla to Idalgashinna ( and the next from Idalgashinna to Udaweriya (
So we continued our journey from Udaweriya to Bambarakanda through the Devil’s Staircase. It’s roughly 13km in length and one of the toughest treks. It made things even more difficult due to the strong winds that were relentless right throughout. So if you plan to this trek, better avoid the windy season which is in Jul-Sep.
On this trek, you will come across the following landmarks:
• Devil’s Staircase
• Udaweriya Estate Falls -
• Top of the Bambarakanda Waterfall -
• Bambarakanda V Cut -
• Views of Gon Molliya Mountain Range with Balathuduwa and Wangedigala
• Distance View of Yahalathenna Ella Waterfall -
• Distance View of Lanka Ella Waterfall -
• Bambarakanda Waterfall -

Haldummulla to Idalgashinna Trek (2018) - 1 of 3
This was my second time doing this in the same year, 2018. The first time was in Mar 2018. So this series is limited to just 3 videos.
However this time we had other plans which you can see in the next video series.
Haldummulla is a town in Sri Lanka. It is located in Badulla District of Uva Province, Sri Lanka. It has many historically important places such as Prehistoric Settlement, Soragune Devalaya & Ancient Portuguese Fort. This Ancient Portuguese Fort was built on the summit of Haldumulla Hill.
So we started our trek close to Portuguese Fort at a place called Needwood Factory and walked along the estate road laden with beautiful green tea plantations.
Idalgashinna (Sinhalese: ඉදල්ගස්හින්න) is a small village in the Badulla District, Uva Province, Sri Lanka. Situated at an elevation of about 1,615 metres (5,299 ft) above sea level, it is located in the Haputale-Namunukula mountain range.
Idalgashinna was established as a tea estate in 1984, although the area had seen isolated periods of settlement prior to this. The Idalgashinna Pass is a prominent geological feature in the area; Idalgashinna was regarded as a key entrance to the upland country, with the Portuguese attempting to use the pass in their wars against the Kingdom of Kandy in the 16th century thus the reason for building a Portuguese Fort in nearby Haldummulla which is about 5-6km away from Idalgashinna.
Idalgashinna Railway Station is the 68th station on the Main Line, located between Haputale and Ohiya railway stations in Badulla District, Uva Province. It is located 8 km (5.0 mi) west of Haputale, at an elevation of 1,615 metres (5,299 ft) above sea level. The station was built after the track was extended in 1893, from the Nanu Oya railway station to Haputale.
The 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) broad gauge main line between Haputale and Idalgashinna is regarded to have a notably scenic view due to the land falling away steeply both sides. The view on the northern side of the station extends beyond Boralanda and Welimada up to Udupussellawa and Hakgala, with the southern side encompassing Beragala down to the coast at Hambantota and the Udawalawa reservoir clearly visible.
It is serviced by the express trains such as Podi Menike, Udarata Menike and Night mail train, as well as all local trains running on the main line.
There are 14 tunnels between the Ohiya and Idalgashinna railway stations.
So the Haldummulla-Idalgashinna Trek is such a rewarding journey for any nature lover.

Portuguese Fort aka Katugodalla Fort, Haldummulla (2015)
Haldummulla Fort (Sinhalese: හල්දුම්මුල්ල පැරණි බලකොටුව), also known as Katugodalla Fort, was built by the Portuguese in Haldummulla, Badulla.
In the 17th century fort was completely destroyed except the foundations, which can still be seen today in the forestry hill area. It served as a frontier post and staging post for Colombo. It provided a good view coverage of the surrounding areas.
This is yet another small documentary done by me on site.

Green concept and its importance by Prof. Sarath Kotagama at the JLANKA-CHPB Workshop
Solidifying its position as a thought leader in the Green Construction movement, JLanka Technologies partnered the Centre for Housing Planning and Building in conducting a one-day workshop on Green Construction Technology. The seminar targeted at addressing industry professionals including Engineers, Planners, Architects, Technical Officers and Contractors explored the broad theme of why Green Building Technology is important and how such techniques can be infused with the practices of the local construction industry.
The opening keynote was delivered by the revered Professor. Sarath Kotagama, who explored the Green concept and its importance in his speech. He delved into the difficult conversation of what is done on the level of a household and at the level of the individual to contribute to the Green movement. Highlighting the importance of conserving water and other resources, Prof. Kotagama brought to light the global state of urgency declared on preserving resources.

Horagolla National Park ( හොරගොල්ල ජාතික උද්යානය )
Horagolla National Park is one of the latest national parks in Sri Lanka. It is so called because of an abundance of Dipterocarpus zeylanicus (hora) trees. The area was originally declared as a wildlife sanctuary on 5 September 1973 due to its rich biodiversity. Later on 24 June 2004, Horagolla was elevated to national park status. Horagolla is the only urban park in the Western Province of Sri Lanka. The park is situated close to Horagolla Walauwa, the home of the Bandaranaike family. The park is situated some 40 kilometres (25 mi) from Colombo.
