REGIOSTARS 2014 - Fifteen Cornwall: Launching a new life in the kitchen
A passion for cooking is transforming young lives in one of the poorest parts of England. Inspired by the celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, Fifteen Cornwall is more than a restaurant but a social enterprise which offers a chance to disadvantaged unemployed 16-to 24-year olds the opportunity to train as chefs. This ground-breaking initiative has trained almost 130 young people, many of whom are dealing with serious challenges such as criminal records, substance misuse, mental illness or disability. 89 of them have graduated as chefs and more than 90% are still in employment. Each year, the project invests around €1.2 million back into the local economy, creating jobs for the region's vital tourist sector.
Region: Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, UK
Total budget: €5 882 000
ERDF/ESF funding: €2 537 000
Financing period: May 2006 -- April 2015

About Us
Find out more about our experiences, qualifications, and awards
I left School at 15 and started work as an assistant gardener with the National Trust at Bateman's in West Sussex -- the home of Rudyard Kipling. A year later I began a five year apprenticeship with the Greater London Council parks department where I gained a City and Guilds certificate in Horticulture and various other related certificates - machinery, pesticides licence and driving horticultural equipment.
I have gained a vast amount of experience which has enabled a better use of my horticultural skills in landscaping, design, plant production, plant welfare and management that I am now able to deliver the highest quality of Horticulture for any individual needs, large or small. Needless to say, this level of knowledge and experience has been priceless throughout my career.
On leaving the GLC I worked within the private sector and managed large contracts for various London boroughs. I worked in retail, owning my own garden centre, then I worked on grounds maintenance within the high quality private estate in London.
In October 1997 I became Gardens Manager for The Horniman Museum and Garden Trust. Over the next fifteen years, the sixteen and a half acre garden I managed, became one of the most awarded green spaces in London.
During my time as Gardens Manager the gardens achieved the following accolades:
The Green Flag awards -- the national standards for parks and green spaces, for ten successive years from 2003 - 2014
Horniman Gardens named Britain's Best Park in South East England by Briggs and Stratton UK, the Sun and Horticulture Week Best Parks Award 2004
London in Bloom certificate of Merit by the London Borough of Lewisham to the contribution made to the Local in Bloom Campaign 2004
Britain in Bloom Bronze award 2004
London in Bloom Silver award 2004
London in Bloom Silver Gilt award 2005
Shortlisted for Individual Excellence Award by the Horticulture Week 2005
Worked on the last of the Ground force TV programme that was a one hour special and the last of the series. This was an African Garden in front of the British Museum in 2005 that was later relocated to the Horniman.
Finalist for Professional Gardener of the year 2006 Horticulture week.
Presented with an award, Certificate of Excellence from the London Borough of Lewisham by the London in Bloom Trustees in recognition of the contribution made to the London in Bloom Campaign 2007.
London in Bloom Silver Gilt award 2007
Horniman Gardens named as one of the Capitals Greenest corners, special recognition 2008 for brightening London and enriching the city's biodiversity, an award presented by David Bellamy
Green Pennant Award, Nature trail 2009 - 2014
Country Life gave Horniman Gardens a bronze award 2012
Qype ( (2012) Europe's leading consumer reviews site) Consumers picked Hornimans as the second most best UK garden after the Lost Gardens of Heligan, St Austell, Cornwall and above Kew, London.
On top of this I successfully completed the green Flag Award Judges training, to become a Green Flag award judge in February 2006 and I have been judging ever since. I have also been a judge with the London in Bloom scheme.
I have derived great pleasure and success with working alongside the British Sundial Society while at the Horniman Museum. Sundials have always been a prominent feature at the Horniman Gardens and by 2013 the Horniman had acquired the largest collection of sundials in Britain.

A fabulous opportunity to purchase a very unique property that is positioned on the edge of this historic South East Cornish fishing village, the elevated position of this beautifully presented bungalow affords stunning views down the valley and over the village of Polperro out towards the sea. The location of the property and the plot which extends to approximately two thirds of an acre very rarely become available and early viewing is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment, as interest is sure to be high!
The property itself is a real credit to the current owners and is immaculate in its presentation throughout, offering three bedrooms, sitting room with multi stove fire, kitchen/dining room, utility and family bathroom, with both the master bedroom and sitting room offering stunning views across the valley and to sea. However the real hidden gem of this property are fabulous private mature gardens, which extend to the rear, and offer the perfect place to laze away those summer days & nights! In addition and for those who know the village of Polperro you will realise what a benefit it is to have parking! this property comes with a detached double garage plus ample further parking to the front of this.
Polperro is a village and fishing port originally belonging to the ancient Raphael Manor mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Situated on the River Pol, four miles west of the major resort of Looe and 25 miles west of the major city and port of Plymouth, It has a picturesque fishing harbour lined with tightly packed houses which make it a popular tourist location in the summer months. The village retains almost all of its 17th Century architectural charm and has been a working fishing port since the 13th Century. This peaceful fishing cove was once a thriving centre for the area’s smuggling. Today, in cellars where furtive smugglers once dodged the Customs Officer’s muskets, you can see displays of local crafts and fishermen’s smocks, or dine in style at one of Polperro’s excellent restaurants. Fishing trips or pleasure cruises can be arranged from the quayside, or one can take the cliff path to explore the secluded smuggling coves of Talland and Lantivet Bay. With its protected inner harbour full of colourful boats packed tightly into a steep valley on either side of the River Pol, the quaint colour-washed cottages and twisting streets, Polperro offers surprises at every turn: the Saxon and Roman bridges, the famous House on Props, The Old Watch House, the fish quay, and the 16th Century house where Dr. Jonathan Couch, naturalist and grandfather of the celebrated writer Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, once lived. The village enjoys the benefit of a local primary school, restaurants, pubs and shops including a Post Office, bakery and a general store. The charm of the village is protected by its status as a conservation area, and the harbour is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
