The Tamba Sasayama Cherry Blossom Festival is held during the second weekend of April, when the cherry blossoms decorate the castle town with Sasayama Castle at its center, at Sasayama Castle Sannomaru Square.
A pleasure of Tamba Sasayama is matching your spirit with the approximately 800 cheerful Yoshino cherry blossoms. Indulge in food before flowers! Typhoon Lan Slams 'Osaka' 'Tokyo' 'Nagoya' 'Yokohama Yokosuka' - Hurricane Storm Kochi 10/22/2017

Upper-level winds are favorable for development, featuring prominent outflow channels both to the northeast and southwest. Typically ample ocean-heat content is also in play.
Therefore, Lan is expected to rapidly intensify into a super typhoon – with maximum sustained winds of at least 150 mph – in the next few days, according to the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecast.
Lan will track generally toward the north, before beginning a northeast turn due to the steering effects of high pressure to its east and the increasing influence of the jet stream as it gains latitude this weekend.
Lan is not expected to pose a threat to the Philippines, Taiwan or eastern China, but by this weekend, it may pass close to Okinawa, then mainland Japan.

A mammoth typhoon is closing in on Japan, hurling dangerous winds and threatening to cause major flooding and mudslides.
Typhoon Lan is expected to make landfall overnight Sunday into Monday along Japan's southern coast near Minamiizu, CNN meteorologist
Enormous waves onto the coast of Busan, South Korea, on Sunday. Fishing boats were forbidden from going out to sea.
Typhoon Lan is so enormous that its cloud field is larger than Japan, Brink said.
On Sunday, Japanese voters participated in a snap general election that was expected to make Shinzo Abe the longest-serving leader in the country's post-war history.
The turnout Sunday was stymied by the typhoon, but a record number of Japanese citizens voted earlier ahead of the storm.
Maximum sustained winds of Typhoon Lan — which is the equivalent of a strong Category 4 hurricane currently located in the Pacific Ocean approximately 350 miles east of Kadena and moving north northeast at a speed of 20 miles per hour — are at 150 miles per hour; and the storm is expected to weaken to the equivalent of a strong Category 3 hurricane when landfall is expected to occur just south or east of Tokyo sometime on Sunday evening, October 22, 2017.
Portions of southern Japan have already been experiencing the effects of this dangerous storm, whose path is expected to pass right over Tokyo. Much of Japan is expected to be significantly impacted by rough surf, flooding, strong rip currents, windy conditions and significant rainfall of up to 12 inches in some areas. Mudslides and widespread power outages are also probable.

acquer ware is a particular specialty of Japan, and especially a specialty of Kiso Valley. The smooth, glazed bowls and dishes are enjoyed for their aesthetic appeal and complement the flavors of a Japanese meal. Recently, the most commonly used lacquer ware is the bowl in which miso soup is served, called Owan.
Kiso-Hirasawa is a village that developed outside the post town of Narai during the Edo Period. It gradually developed a strong reputation as its lacquer products became renowned throughout Japan. Today, Kiso-Hirasawa still takes advantage of its popularity as a producer of lacquer goods.
A number of lacquer stores are located throughout Kiso-Hirasawa, as well as a museum about lacquering called Kisoshikkikan. It is almost all in Japanese, but has many impressive lacquered goods on display. It also exhibits the tools and techniques that are involved in the lacquering process. The shops offer lacquerware of all types that are usually quite expensive, though modestly priced goods can also be found.
Kiso-Hirasawa is located just two kilometers or a two minute train ride north of Narai. Limited express trains between Nagoya and Nagano do not stop at Kiso-Hirasawa Station. Instead, change to a local train at Shiojiri or Kiso-Fukushima.
Kiso-Hirasawa's town center is compact and can be explored on foot.

THE PATH OF WILDNESS
The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast's track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination
The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.

Kominka - Japanese Traditional House Tour
Here is a tour of the house I am staying out for the next few days.
Irori (traditional sunken hearth) is to me the most representative bit of a Japanese house.
The Sansai (mountain vegetables) that grow wildly in such areas as Shiojiri and people can find around on road sides, their gardens and the area is called “Fuki” not Kuki, sorry about the mistake.

10th ANNUAL NAGANO TOUMYOU FESTIVAL
ZENKOJI DREAM NIGHTLIGHT
LIGHTS IN THE 5 OLYMPIC AND BUDDHIST COLORS
The Toumyou Festival is held every year to commemorate the Winter Olympic Games in Nagano prefecture, central Japan, hosted in 1998,
and to pass on to the future generations the Olympic spirit of praying for peace. In this event,
the message for peace is conveyed through lights with the aim of reaching out to the world.
The United Nations declared the year 2011 the International Year of Forests to increase public awareness
and strengthen the conservation and sustainable development of forests, a precious asset to all mankind.
Nagano is a region surrounded by mountains,
including the scenic Japan Alps, while the people of Nagano have for centuries lived in close harmony
with their surrounding natural environment with due respect for the distinct four seasons.
There cannot be too many places in Japan more suitable than Nagano for promoting the campaign launched by the world body.
Consequently, Japan and Germany celebrate the 150th anniversary of friendship between the two nations this year.
Germany is a country known for its vast forests, including the renowned Schwarzwald (Black Forest).
The Toumyou Festival seizes this commemorative year to collaborate with
the German Embassy in Japan to jointly deliver calls for forest protection and to further foster bilateral ties
from Zenko-ji Temple in Nagano City, when the venue is lit with five colored lights of peace.

Driving to Saku, Nagano-ken
This is a video of us driving with my wife's mom to Saku City in Nagano-ken from the Okaya area. Then a week later, around our neighborhood and the snowy mountains. Coming from Phoenix where I was sometimes wearing short sleeve shirts during the day, I'm now getting used to the cold.
