BEAUTIFUL NATURE (সুন্দর প্রকৃতি / सुंदर प्रकृति)OF KOLKATA (CALCUTTA), INDIA
Nature, in the broadest sense, is the natural, physical, or material world or universe. Nature can refer to the phenomena of the physical world, and also to life in general. The study of nature is a large part of science. Although humans are part of nature, human activity is often understood as a separate category from other natural phenomena.
The word nature is derived from the Latin word natura, or essential qualities, innate disposition, and in ancient times, literally meant birth. Natura is a Latin translation of the Greek word physis, which originally related to the intrinsic characteristics that plants, animals, and other features of the world develop of their own accord. This usage continued during the advent of modern scientific method in the last several centuries.
Within the various uses of the word today, nature often refers to geology and wildlife. Nature can refer to the general realm of living plants and animals, and in some cases to the processes associated with inanimate objects – the way that particular types of things exist and change of their own accord, such as the weather and geology of the Earth. It is often taken to mean the natural environment or wilderness–wild animals, rocks, forest, and in general those things that have not been substantially altered by human intervention, or which persist despite human intervention. For example, manufactured objects and human interaction generally are not considered part of nature, unless qualified as, for example, human nature or the whole of nature. This more traditional concept of natural things which can still be found today implies a distinction between the natural and the artificial, with the artificial being understood as that which has been brought into being by a human consciousness or a human mind. Depending on the particular context, the term natural might also be distinguished from the unnatural or the supernatural.
Although humans comprise only a minuscule proportion of the total living biomass on Earth, the human effect on nature is disproportionately large. Because of the extent of human influence, the boundaries between what humans regard as nature and made environments is not clear cut except at the extremes. Even at the extremes, the amount of natural environment that is free of discernible human influence is diminishing at an increasingly rapid pace.
The development of technology by the human race has allowed the greater exploitation of natural resources and has helped to alleviate some of the risk from natural hazards. In spite of this progress, however, the fate of human civilization remains closely linked to changes in the environment. There exists a highly complex feedback loop between the use of advanced technology and changes to the environment that are only slowly becoming understood. Man-made threats to the Earth's natural environment include pollution, deforestation, and disasters such as oil spills. Humans have contributed to the extinction of many plants and animals.
Humans employ nature for both leisure and economic activities. The acquisition of natural resources for industrial use remains the primary component of the world's economic system. Some activities, such as hunting and fishing, are used for both sustenance and leisure, often by different people. Agriculture was first adopted around the 9th millennium BCE. Ranging from food production to energy, nature influences economic wealth.
Although early humans gathered uncultivated plant materials for food and employed the medicinal properties of vegetation for healing, most modern human use of plants is through agriculture. The clearance of large tracts of land for crop growth has led to a significant reduction in the amount available of forestation and wetlands, resulting in the loss of habitat for many plant and animal species as well as increased erosion.

More than half a century ago the pews of Kolkata’s stately synagogues were filled with members of a thriving Indian Jewish community. Today, the congregations are dwindling but dedicated Muslim caretakers tend to the three active synagogues in the city. One patriarch has been in the role for 60 years and works alongside his two sons. Atlas Obscura and filmmaker Ana Gonzalez share the history of Kolkata's Magen David Synagogue in this poignant short.

INDIA: CALCUTTA MOTHER TERESA LIES IN STATE AT ST THOMAS CHURCH
Natural Sound
Mother Teresa's body on Sunday was placed in one of the largest Catholic churches in Calcutta to lie in state.
The body was moved from the headquarters of her worldwide charity to accommodate the throngs of Indians who have already begun to pay their final respects.
A state funeral is set for next Saturday.
One day after Princess Diana's coffin was carried past anguished mourners, Mother Teresa departed her charity and passed alongside her distraught followers.
Mother Teresa's body was carried on Sunday through the streets of Calcutta to a larger church, St Thomas, where her countless admirers will be able to pay final respects.
Missionary nuns and altar boys carrying candles and a crucifix surrounded the open coffin as pall bearers placed it in an ambulance for the journey to St Thomas Catholic church.
Mother Teresa will lie in state at the church, one of Calcutta's largest, for the next week.
The nuns of her order decided the convent chapel at her headquarters was too small to accommodate crowds.
As Mother Teresa arrived at the church, thousands of mourners greeted her arrival.
Her body was quickly placed under a glass case on a four-foot platform draped in white and blue cloth.
People began to file by, to pay their last respects.
A line of mourners began forming before dawn, and by 9am snaked a half mile along the sidewalk in front of St. Thomas' chapel
Thousands of people were expected to file past Mother Teresa's body at the church, which is in a fashionable Calcutta neighborhood that contrasted with the slums where she toiled during life.
Mother Teresa, who retained her simplicity and humility despite an avalanche of international fame, died on Friday night after a heart attack, surrounded by grieving sisters of her order.
The site of Mother Teresa's funeral was not announced.
But she is expected to be buried at the convent in central Calcutta that was her home and also formed the headquarters of her Missionaries of Charity order.
