Driving Up Biokovo, Croatia's highest road near Makarska
Driving Up Biokovo, Croatia's highest road near Makarska. The views from Biokovo are spectacular – on the clear day one can see all Dalmatian islands as well as large part of Dalmatian coast to the south, and to the north, towns of Vrgorac and Imotski and their surrounding villages. Sometimes, when it’s very clear, one can see a peak of Monte Gargano in Italy too.
The coastal town of Makarska, that lies on the very south edge of Biokovo is seen from Biokovo as a amazing bay with tiny little houses placed in the rows around it. The nature park Biokovo dominating above Makarska Riviera, is the good destination for botanists as well as walkers and cyclist.

Hiking in Biokovo Nature Park, Croatia - Gabrielius Ser
Hi, in this video I'm hiking in Biokovo Nature Park near city Makarska, Croatia.
Biokovo Nature Park is the most dominating presence on the southern Dalmatian coast. Proclaimed a nature park in 1981, this mountain rampart towers a good 1500 meters over the Makarska Riviera and offers exceptional views over the sea and nearby islands. It is one of Croatia's most popular destinations for hikers with myriad paths that wind up the hills past olive groves, vineyards and pine forests.

Makarska Riviera, Croatia Biokovo
The beauty of Biokovo has always attracted explorers and visitors and you are likely to be thrilled too. What is the best way to get to know it. There are over thirty marked trails leading up the mountain on the seaward side and eight on the landward side. On your way up, you will pass ancient villages on the foothills of the magnificent rocky mountain: Gornja Brela, Topici, Bast, Veliko Brdo, Makar, Kotisina, Gornji Tucepi, Gornja Podgora and Gornje Igrane on the seaward side, and Kozica, Rascane, Zupa, Biokovsko Selo, Rastovac, Zagvozd and Zadvarje on the other side of the mountain. A main hiking trail transverses the mountain - the Biokovo Mountain Trail with its twenty control points. However, one should not forget that Biokovo deserves full respect and therefore should be well-prepared for the ascent. ImageThe weather conditions can change in a moment, no surface water is to be found and any deviation from the marked trail entails some risk. Hiking boots, backpack, spare clothing, raincoat, drinking water, some chocolate and a good map of the Park are the items you will surely need. Climbing the steepest ascent in Croatian mountains at dawn, you will be surprised to learn that the people of Biokovo once used the same trails to carry hay and potatoes or drive their livestock to pasture. Biokovo is the mountain that one can visit either by car or bicycle as well as on foot from various parts of Adriatic coast and Makarska Riviera.

Biokovo Snow Run
Biokovo is the largest and the highest mountain in Dalmatia with two prominent peaks: St. Jure is higher with a huge TV tower construction, while St. Elijah is more modest and to many far prettier. Both peaks have a steep direct approach between high limestone walls from the seaside.
You can reach St. Jure by driving up the narrow road that was built for servicing the TV tower. In winter months the upper part of this road is snowbound so park where you can and proceed on foot.
This route connects St. Jure to St. Elijah peak with no significant elevation gain but through some quite rough rocky terrain.
Biokovo is large enough to attract harsh conditions with severe winds, heavy snows and extremely low temperatures in otherwise mild and sunny Mediterranean winters. Aim for sunny days after snowfalls and you'll be rewarded with some exciting icy scenery with the glittering Adriatic sea in the background. Rather postpone your visit for a few days if adverse weather is in the forecast. You definitely don't want to race storms in this mountain.
Juru i Sv.
Running around St. Jure peak (1762m) above Makarska. As the snow melted we became slower. This mountain is huge!
BIOKOVO - Trčimo oko Sv. Jure (1762m) i prema Sv. Iliji.
A video of an explorer and his husky traversing the frozen lakes and waterfalls of Plitvice National Park went viral last week. The adventurer Ante Tonči Fabris has produced another video, this time scaling the magnificent Biokovo, the largest and highest mountain in Dalmatia, at 1762m above sea-level. Just take a look at these incredible snow-tipped peaks and glorious blue sky.

Peter Menzel (PMMedia1) Music by Michael Donner
