Lilongwe Wildlife Centre in Lilongwe, Malawi
Lilongwe Wildlife Centre in Lilongwe, Malawi
The Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is a wildlife sanctuary in Lilongwe, Malawi. It was founded in 2007 by the Lilongwe Wildlife Trust (LWT), with support from the Born Free Foundation. The Centre is a member of the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance.
Lilongwe Wildlife Trust (LWT) was established in 2008 when it opened the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre as a wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and education facility. Its mission is to protect Malawi’s wildlife by helping wild animals in need, combatting wildlife crime and empowering guardians of the wild. It currently operates four programmes: wildlife rescue and welfare, wildlife research, education and advocacy, and wildlife law enforcement.
The Wildlife Centre in the heart of the country’s capital city is the hub for both wildlife rescue and education. Based around a small, urban nature reserve, it normally houses about 200 animals (most of them brought in by LWT’s Wildlife Emergency Rescue Unit) and returns them to the wild wherever possible. It also welcomes over 34,000 visitors a year, more than 25,000 of whom are school children participating in the environmental education programme, which is linked to the national curriculum. Education outreach also takes the programme to schools in major cities and around protected areas. Meanwhile broader advocacy raises public awareness of conservation issues, in particular wildlife crime. LWT also supports government agencies in wildlife investigations and prosecutions, which has led to an increase in arrests of 1,000% and many significant jail sentences rather than small fines.
Tusk has supported the education work of LWT, providing opportunities for the local community to experience the flora and fauna of Malawi and developing conservation awareness amongst communities across the country.
The work of LWT is vital to inspire the country’s young people to become guardians of their natural heritage. It needs our continuing support to achieve this goal.

Children of Malawi
Meet some of the children that we welcome to The Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, Malawi. Thanks to volunteer Dawn Clark for putting this together with the pictures she took during her time with us.
As a centre for the people of Malawi we believe we can make a real difference to conservation through education programmes. That is why the wildlife centre welcomes over 10,000 children through the gates, many of whom are from the poorest regions of Lilongwe. The children get to take a tour of the wildlife centre and view our residents, and for many this is the only opportunity they will have in their life time to see these animals.
We also offer structured educational classes so we can teach them more about their natural habitat and how they can help preserve it. They also get to use our adventure playground, the biggest in the country!
Malawi Wildlife Rescue TV Series
‘Malawi Wildlife Rescue’ is a six-part TV series that follows the adventures of the dedicated staff behind the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, Malawi’s only wildlife sanctuary.
Follow wildlife vet Dr. Amanda Salb and her team as they go above and beyond to save injured and orphaned animals and get them back to the wild, where they belong.
Coming to Love Nature channels from January, in association with Blue Ant Media.

Moving Elephants: new space to live

Malawi elephant relocation
*Malawi elephant relocation footage courtesy of African Parks*
Between 2007 and 2014, elephant populations dropped by 30% in Africa primarily because of poaching. Currently, the population is declining at 8% per year. Luckily, there are people and organizations passionate enough about these enormous animals that they are willing to take a stand against all odds. The 500 Elephant Project is the continent’s largest translocation of elephants to a 42,000-acre preserve within Malawi’s Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, managed by the non-profit organization African Parks from the Majete Wildlife Reserve and Liwonde National Park. We bring you the whole story on this giant effort to move Africa’s largest giants to their new home.
Lilongweâs wildlife National Park attracts financial support
Lilongweâs wildlife National Park attracts financial support
Malawiâs main Wildlife Centre, the Lilongwe Wildlife Center situated in the heart of the Capital City, Lilongwe has attracted a lot of financial support from well-wishers. The Wildlife Center cares of injured, orphaned and rescued wild animals and is set up in the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary. Not only is the Lilongwe Wildlife Center a rehabilitation facility but it also serves as an education centre aiming to teach the cityâs children about Malawiâs wildlife. The Centre now has new management with chairman Mark Sprong of Land & Lake Safaris at the helm and His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester as patron. Among well-known figures and companies that will be lending their support financially in publicizing the Center are Virginia McKenna, the Born Free Foundation, Kelloggs, W H Smith, Thompson Fly, and the Body Shop. In addition to animal rescue and rehabilitation, the Center has also opened a luxury tourist lodge within its premises. Part of the proceeds from this lodge will be donated to the Centerâs work. Malawi and nature-lovers worldwide welcome this development.

A guy with a bicycle came around, and he had that monkey. But it was very thin and very hungry at that stage - you could see its condition was very bad - at the back of this bicycle, with a chain put onto the bicycle. So I went down to that guy and I said what's the issue with that vervet monkey? And he said no, nothing, it's mine. At that stage I saw how thin and how sick he actually was, and I said to the guy 'can I buy it?' and he said 'yes you can buy it', and then I bought it actually.

Pansie, the monkey we just examined was generally in very good condition. Wild animals are usually in a much worse condition when they are brought in here. It will be easy for Pansie to go through rehabilitation, and obviously depending on the full results of these tests, he will be integrated into an established vervet troop after his 30-day quarantine. This troop will eventually be released into the wild.
