Nelson zoo has new lease of life
Nelson's Natureland Zoo was on the brink of extinction until 2013 when a young American zoologist and her New Zealand husband turned up with big plans.

CAPUCHIN MONKEYS – COME AND BUILD ENRICHMENTS

Help our keepers construct enrichments items for the Capuchins while learning how these clever monkeys can even use tools! We use enrichment to stimulate natural behaviors, and you can be a part of the fun!

Kea are considered by some to be the smartest birds in the world. Have a chat to a Natureland Keeper about the role play has in kea behaviour, and help make a kea enrichment of your own.
NATIVE CONSERVATION KEEPER TALK

Come and chat to our keepers as they work in our native aviary. They will share how Natureland plays an important role in the conservation of Tui, Kereru, and Kakariki in Nelson, and how you can help protect our native wildlife!

Meet Peru, Gemini, and baby Azul, and their agouti sidekicks, as the keepers explain how the two coexist in South America. Zoos are playing an important role in challenging the pet trade, a key threat to marmosets. Come learn how you can help!
TUATARA TALK
DAILY 2:30 P.M.
Natureland is a great place to see these unique creatures up close while listening to one of our keepers talk about why Tuatara are so special. Please note that our Tuatara hibernate from April to October, but our keepers are still available to talk about these amazing creatures all year round.
AFRICAN CRESTED PORCUPINE, AND MEERKAT KEEPER CHAT
DAILY 3.30 P.M
Our nocturnal Akoko, and Diallo's day starts later than most and 3.30pm is a great time to see them and have a chat to a keeper about what makes these spiky rodents special!
Learn about our Meerkats special adaptations for surviving in the harsh desert environment, our complex family structures and how to eat a scorpion!
IMPROMPTU ENCOUNTERS
There is always lots going on at Natureland, depending on the time of year you might get to help bottle feed a Lamb or a Llama, have a chat with one of our talkative birds, or cuddle up with our rabbits. On sunny days you are likely to find keepers taking animals out to enjoy the weather, and are always happy to introduce you to their scaled or feathered friends.

Nelson, New Zealand
Nelson is a city on the eastern shores of Tasman Bay, and is the economic and cultural centre of the Nelson region. Established in 1841, it is the second-oldest settled city in New Zealand and the oldest in the South Island, and was proclaimed a city by royal charter in 1858.
Nelson city is bordered to the west and south-west by the Tasman District Council and the north-east, east and south-east by the Marlborough District Council. The city does not include Richmond, the region's second-largest settlement. Nelson City has a population of around 46,437 ranking it as New Zealand's 12th most populous city and the geographical centre of New Zealand. When combined with the town of Richmond which has close on 14,000 residents, Nelson is ranked as New Zealand's 9th largest urban area by population.
