We started off our grand Greek adventure in the picturesque coastal town of Nafplion. It was the first capital of Greece, after she won her independence from the Ottoman Turks.
We spent Christmas morning walking through the town. It was a little chilly, but the views were breathtaking. Nafplio maintains a traditional architectural style with many colourful buildings, churches, statues and enormous fortifications. We followed a walking tour using the guidebook by Rick Steeves, and got to learn a lot about the history of the city.
Some of the shops were closed as it was a day of celebration, but we could still feel the old-world charm while walking through the narrow streets.
Afterwards, we enjoyed an excellent traditional lunch at a restaurant near the promenade: fresh Greek salad, creamy souvlakis and rich mousakkas. Then it was time for a gentle stroll by the turquoise blue water. This was the highlight of the day: I have hardly seen more beautiful sights! The beach at the end of the walk was not much, and the water was cold, but I really enjoyed dipping my feet in it for a while.
The next day, we drove up to Palamidi fortress. You can hike up too, but as I was accompanied by my parents, we chose the easier and more comfortable option. The fortress was built in 1714, by the Venetians when then had captured the city. As we went quite early in the morning, we could avoid the crowds and enjoy once again, breath-taking views of the sea and the city.
The last highlight of our trip was Karathona beach. We timed our arrival with the day’s sunset, and thus enjoyed a brilliant riot of colours on the sky and the sea. It left nothing else to be desired. I hope to go back someday, maybe during summer so that I can enjoy swimming there.
Thus, we made our way back to the Airbnb, very excited to continue our adventure to the next destination: Monemvasia.
