MAHA SHAKTI PEETA- JOGULAMBA DEVI
Jogulamba Devi temple at Alampur, Andhra Pradesh is the 5th Shakthi peeta among the 18 Maha Shakthi Peetas. Here Sati is worshipped as Jogulamba Devi or Yogamba Devi and Lord Shiva as Bala Brahmeswara Swamy. Oordhav Danta Panki (upper jaw with tooth) of Sati fell here. our site
Alampur is a sleepy town situated on the banks Tungabhadra River, in the state of Telangana. Alampur is considered as the western gateway of Srisailam. Here the marvelous temple and remains of some ancient temple signify Badami Chalukyan architecture. The region was ruled by many South Indian dynasties. The principal deities at the Jogulamba temple are Jogulamba and Balabrahmeshwara. Goddess Jogulamba is considered the 5th Shakti Peeta among 18 shakti peetams in the country. Here Goddess Jogulamba is seen seated on the Corpse with scorpion, frog, and lizard on the head. She is seen in a naked avtar with her tongue stretched outside, an avtar of fierce goddess that grants Siddhi in Yoga and hence called Jogulamba. This word is a changed form of Yogula Amma in Telugu which means Mother of Yogis.
According to a popular legend there was a great saint in 6th century called Rasa Siddha who had the power to convert base metal into gold and he was considered close to chalukya king Pulakesi II, instrumental in constructing any temples called ‘Nava Brahmas’. According to the legend, the nine names of Siva are actually the names of medicinal herbs put forth by Rasa Siddha and there are nine temples here. They are the Swarga Brahma Temple Padma Brahma Temple, Vishva Brahma Temple Arka Brahma Temple, Bala Brahma Temple, Garuda Brahma Temple, and Taraka Brahma Temple. The Siddha Rasarnavam is a tantric work, which states that if upasana is performed as per the prescribed Tantra, then Mercury oozes from the Linga of Bala Brahma, Thighs of Subramanya, Navel of Ganapati, and Mouth of Mother Jogulamba, which can be converted into Gold by using the medicinal herbs.

The Alampur temple complex consists of The Jogulamba temple, which is a Shakti Peetham, and 9 Navabrahma temples. In addition, the Sangameswara and Papanasi temples are located within a distance of 2 kms from the Navabrahma temples. The architecture of these temples is exceptional, though it has been ravaged by time and history. All these temples were built by Chalukya kings between the 7 and 11 centuries. The Papanasi temples are a group of temples that were relocated at Alampur from areas that were expected to be submerged after the completion of Srisailam dam.Alampur is situated in Telangana state, and about 200kms from Hyderabad and 22 kms from Kurnool. All the temples of Alampur are located within a radius of 2 kms. For both the pious, and connoisseurs of architecture, the entire visit is not likely to exceed 3 to 4 hrs. On non festival/auspicious days, visit to Jogulamba temple for archana/ puja can be completed in an hour. For a person intending to perform religious rites in the Sanctum Sanctorium, a dhoti is compulsory. Pujas are also performed in the Balabrahma temple which is adjacent to Jogulamba temple. Even this temple has great religious sanctity. It is believed that it was in Balabrahma temple that the deity of Jogulamba was protected for nearly 6 centuries from the Muslim invaders. Public transport is not a convenient way to travel to this place. I would recommend visitors to use their own or hire taxis. Kurnool which is 22 kms from Alampur, is well connected with the rest of India, and all those who have time on their hands can make Kurnool their base and visit other wonderful places around Kurnool, in addition to Alampur. Alampur, is a small town that can provide basic necessities like food and snacks. Telangana Tourism operates a small hotel for food and accommodation. These temples are being rated 4star for their exceptional architecture and the religious significance of Jogulamba temple for Hindus. The ease of access and the peripheral facilities are just about average. This is a recommended place of visit if one is already in the Kurnool area.
