ASSA's contribution to Bloemfontein's Two Observatories' Project
Presented by H.J. van Heerden at the ASSA Symposium, 2012 October 13, at SAAO in Cape Town.
Bloemfontein's Two Observatories Project was launched in 2011 by the Physics Department at the UFS in close collaboration with ASSA Bloemfontein and the Free State Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DETEA). The aim of the project is to preserve Bloemfontein's two observatories, namely, the Boyden Observatory and the Lamont Hussey Observatory, and to develop these facilities for academic, public and educational use. The last 20 years have seen a rapid revival of astronomy in Bloemfontein. Boyden Observatory was upgraded in several different phases, and included the refurbishment of the Boyden 60-inch telescope. An active astrophysics research group was established at the UFS. At this time, a long-held dream to establish a planetarium in Bloemfontein is about to be fulfilled at the old observatory on Naval Hill. This talk will outline the involvement of ASSA in public and educational events including astronomy fairs and other outreach events, renovation and improvements of old telescopes, and finally, in historical research.

Bloemfontein is popularly and poetically known as the city of roses, for its abundance of these flowers and the annual rose festival held there. The city's Sesotho name is Mangaung, meaning place of cheetahs.
The origin of the city's name is disputed. It is likely borrowed from the Dutch words bloem (flower) and fontein (fountain), meaning fountain of flowers. Popular legends include an ox named Bloem owned by Rudolphus Martinus Brits, one of the pioneer farmers that was taken by a lion near a fount...

Sig Sight - a planetarium studio performance - Extract 1 - by Marcus Neustetter
This is one of 5 extracts from a planetarium performance by Marcus Neustetter for the Vrystaat Art Festival. Commissioned by PIAD and The Andrew W Mellon Foundation.
Partnership: PIAD, Andrew. W. Mellon Fondation, UFS, Vrystaat Kunstefees
Participants: Navalsig School & Community, Naval Hill Planetarium, Boyden Observatory
“I want to turn the spaces of scientific pursuit and presentation into a studio of co -production and personal exploration.” Naval Hill stands as a beacon above the Bloemfontein landscape. This hill and planetarium sits at the edge of a vast galaxy of mysteries, yet many at the foot of this hill are not part of the privileged discoveries and imaginings of distant places. Through a series of creative interventions, The Vertical Journey - a gesture both of looking up into the curiosities of space and down onto the realities of today’s challenges - present production experiments on Naval Hill, Boyden Observatory, and the neighbourhood below it, to tell personal stories and collective expressions. These are projected on the side of Naval Hill and in the planetarium during the time of the Festival.

Tangible Things of American Astronomy, or What Does a Computer Have in Common with a Teapot?
Sara J. Schechner, David P. Wheatland Curator, Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments, Harvard University
As a science that studies distant celestial objects, astronomy deals with few things that can be touched directly. And yet, astronomy has many tangible things—scientific instruments and observatories, for example—that link the past to the present. There is little question about maintaining things still valuable for scientific research purposes, but why should we care about documenting and preserving the old and obsolete? Sara Schechner, recipient of the 2018 LeRoy E. Doggett Prize for Historical Astronomy, will discuss what can be learned from a sundial, a tea set, some telescopes and clocks, a life mask, a rotating desk, photographs, and even fly spankers.
