LST 325 WW2 Ship on the Move
On September 16th, 2017 the WW2 museum ship LST 325, a tank landing craft, was moving from a visit in Clarksville, TN back to it's home base in Evansville, IN.
I took the opportunity to go meet it while underway to watch it sail by. My first stop was at Fort Donelson in Dover, TN where they put on a show blasting Anchors Away and firing cannons.
I then moved to Linton, KY on Lake Barkley to watch it again in a less crowded setting.

Mykonos | Maritime museum
The Aegean Maritime Museum was the first museum in Greece that rescued and restored living historical exhibits to operate as they were originally designed and built. Located in a traditional Cycladic building in Tria Pigadia, the purpose of the museum is the preservation and study of the Greek nautical tradition. The exhibits of the museum include rich collections of ship models and rowers from the early Minoan period until the beginning of the 20th century, nautical charts, historical shipping documents, rare engravings and maps as well as ancient artifacts and navigational equipment and instruments. The library of the museum consists of 5,000 rare books and an interesting archive of manuscripts and photos. The garden exhibits marble findings from Delos and Mykonos, a reference to shipwrecks and sailors who were lost at sea. For 4 euros, you will be instructed to proceed clockwise through the museum in order to see the exhibits in historical order. Everything is carefully labeled with helpful historical notes in Greek and English. The courtyard in the back is very attractive and a nice little escape from walking the charming narrow streets of Mykonos town. The Aegean Maritime Museum participates in international conferences and exhibitions, as well as in the festivities of the Hellenic Navy for the Maritime Week. It has also developed a significant publishing activity in the area of the Greek maritime history. The museum is open daily from April to October from 10:30 -- 13:00 and 18:30 -- 21:00.

Santorini: The Prehistoric Museum at Fira
An eruption dated to 1540 B.C. destroyed Thera (now Santorini) cratering out the island, leaving The Caldera, or cauldron. The Minoan settlement at Akrotiri was covered in pumice. This is where the oldest frescoes in the world were found.
The Large Ship fresco, which was under restoration, depicts a naval battle, city walls, human figures, landscape, fish, and animals. The scene may be a representation of a seasonal maritime festival or even a scene from a lost epic poem.
The wall painting of The Blue Monkeys, showing them climbing rocks in an effort to escape two dogs, is dated from 1700 B.C.
The Fisherman” (1650 BC) has a partially shaved head, dyed blue, giving an offering of fish, likely performing a religious ritual.
These frescoes, along with the three that follow, on display in The National Archaeological Museum in Athens, were also found at Akrotiri.
This fresco is the first example of landscape painting, along with spritely gazelles and well-heeled boxers.

The Temple of Poseidon at Sounion _ Yanni

The Temple of Poseidon at Sounion Greece
At Cape Sounion, the Athenians built a sanctuary surrounded by a wall. The sanctuary consisted of temples dedicated to the gods of the city. The principal temple was dedicated to Poseidon, the god of the sea. This is a Doric temple and is the only temple which has been preserved until today.
The Sanctuary at Sounion The Cape of Sounion was, in antiquity, the southern boundary of the territory of the city-state of Athens. It is located at a height of 73 metres above the sea level. The second most important temple was dedicated to Goddess Athena, the goddess of wisdom and the goddess after whom the city took its name. In the outdoor space of the sanctuary, there were erected statues, votives dedicated to the gods, which were offered either by the city or by eminent city dwellers of Athens. One of them is known as the Sounion Kouros (Kouros= young man) and is exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum. In ancient times, the temples and statues were not all white; they were decorated in colour.
The Construction of the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion we see today – Historical background The Persian Wars stand out as an important milestone in the history of the Greeks. The Persians attempted two campaigns against the Greeks by gathering their army with fighters recruited from every corner of their empire: the one campaign was led in 490 BC and the other one ten years later, in 480 BC. The Greek state-formations, the city-states and kingdoms, allied with themselves in order to repulse the Persian invader. Both campaigns ended in Persian defeat, despite the overwhelming numerical superiority of the Persian army. The united Greeks emerged victorious because they fought for their freedom. Freedom is a concept fundamental to the ancient Greek civilization. The Persians and their enslaved peoples fought merely in fear of the Persian king and did not know what freedom meant. In the battles of the Persian wars, the Athenians and Spartans were the leading force. The Greek victories in the Persian wars stimulated the sense of national pride and self-confidence and boosted the Greek civilisation.
During the second Persian campaign, the military leadership of the city-state of Athens considered that the Athenians had to leave the city and organise their defence elsewhere. Thereby, the Persians invaded the deserted city and plundered it. They burned the sacred temples of the Acropolis and Sounion. The Athenians, from afar, could see the flames from the fire consuming their city rising up in the sky. However, they were not intimidated, because they knew that the actual power of their city was their naval supremacy and, above all, the soul of its people. After their victory, the Athenians returned to their city to realise the magnitude of the disaster.
It was then that Athens takes on the leading role among the Greeks. The protagonist in the political life of the city was first Kimon and then Pericles. It was Pericles who promoted democratic institutions. With his reforms, the citizens were increasingly involved in the administration of their city. The power of aristocracy was limited. The period during which Pericles ruled over the political life of Athens, namely from 461 up to 429 BC, is known as “the Golden Age of Pericles”. In Greek it is called “the Golden Century”, although it actually lasted for only thirty years. On Pericles's initiative, the ruined temples of the Acropolis and, Sounion were reconstructed. The temples that we can see today on the Acropolis Hill as well as the temple of Poseidon at Sounion were erected in the context of the Pericles's building programme. The Temple of Poseidon we see today was completed about forty years after the second Persian invasion, namely around 440 BC.
The myth of Theseus and the Minotaur The cape of Sounion is associated with the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. This myth is dated back to a thousand years before the temple of Poseidon was built.

Welcome to Oia, Greece, a small community residing on the northernmost tip of Santorini. While it’s now a relaxing holiday getaway for visitors from all over the world, this sleepy Aegean town, perched on the clifftops around a former volcanic caldera, once boasted a powerful merchant fleet.
Any tour of Oia allows you to see the remains of some of this power scattered throughout town. A number of captains’ houses, built in the 1800s, are positioned near the top of the caldera and feature commanding views of the town and the turquoise Aegean Sea. One of these mansions has been restored and repurposed as the Naval Maritime Museum, inviting you to stop by during your Oia sightseeing. While there, you’ll learn about the history of seafaring in the area. Check out the figureheads, old charts, antique equipment, and stunning architecture that features vaulted ceilings and terraced rooftops.
Oia tourism leans heavily on rest and relaxation. Many visiting artists were taken with the beautiful natural scenery and ended up moving to the island. As a result, Oia has a number of art galleries. Wander through the village’s narrow streets, stroll in and out of those galleries, and meander to a café overlooking the sea where you can continue to relax. You’ll realize exactly why these creative folks fell so deeply in love with Oia.
When you’re ready to bid the sun farewell, you’ll have a lot of company. Sunset is a big deal in this small community, and you’ll make new friends when you gather on Oia’s many viewing platforms to watch this spectacular event.
What will you do in Oia?

Holiday and Travel Destination Santorini, Greek Island and the Villa Michalis
Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. It was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, forever shaping its rugged landscape. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its 2 principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater). They overlook the sea, small islands to the west and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles.
Two weeks holiday in Santorini, staying at Villa Michalis in Vilchada. Visited the beaches nearby and the capital Fira. Hired a car to visit Oia.
Vlychada is an easily accessible beach by car or bus, located on the south coast of Santorini, 13 kilometers from Fira. It stands out for the overwhelming carved cliffs that resemble a sculptor’s work but is, in fact, a natural process owed to the volcano, the wind and the sea. It is a lengthy beach with relatively shallow waters and dark volcanic sand and pebbles, like most beaches in Santorini. Not that crowded but organized with multiple sunbeds, straw umbrellas and a canteen, you can spend many relaxing hours here and cherish the spectacular sight all around. Merely this natural wonder makes it worthwhile.
The Sailing and Yachting Center is also found in Vlychada, in the small charming port close to the beach. Small yachts and boats anchor in the marina there and you can enjoy a meal including fresh fish in the local, traditional taverns. Additionally, you can visit the Tomato Industrial Museum, a former tomato factory, and enjoy a guided tour concerning the traditional methods of cultivation and production of the tomato, a well-known product of Santorini.
Vlychada Beach is worthy for the without parallel lunar landscape that enchants all visitors and is unique among the beaches in Santorini. It is, in fact, the most atmospheric beach you can find in the whole island.
Villa Michalis
Offering a seasonal outdoor pool and views of the mountains, Villa Michalis is located in Vlychada in the Santoríni Region, 15 km from Oía. Guests can enjoy the on-site restaurant. Free WiFi is offered throughout the property and free private parking is available on site.
Every room includes a flat-screen TV with satellite channels. A terrace or balcony are featured in certain rooms. Every room is fitted with a private bathroom fitted with a shower. For your comfort, you will find free toiletries and a hair dryer.
You will find ticket service at the property.
Bike hire and car hire are available at this hotel and the area is popular for horse riding and snorkeling. Fira is 9 km from Villa Michalis, while Kamari is 5 km away. The nearest airport is Thira Airport, 8 km from Villa Michalis.
Fira is the capital of Santorini, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. The Museum of Prehistoric Thira displays items from the destroyed Bronze Age settlement of Akrotiri, including wall paintings and ceramics. Nearby, the whitewashed Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral has frescoes by local artist Christoforos Asimis. Fira’s clifftop location affords views of Nea Kameni, a still-active volcanic island to the west.

Andros Island in Greece... your #islandgetaway
One island, one story, and you.
374 km2 dipped in deep blue and bathed by the Greek sun all year long, with paths, waters, and breath-taking vistas that accomplish nothing else but to fascinate, fulfil all the conditions that can give birth to a story that you will remember forever.
Andros... your #islandgetaway
A Greek island that adorns the Cyclades
In the Cyclades, there is a Greek island that certainly stands out. It stands out mainly because of nature, and the morphology which does not seems like the Cyclades. Above all, you not often you see an island that combines dry Cycladic landscape and abundant water. Lush vegetation and rare wildlife. Museums, events, and neoclassical architecture. Countless beaches and imposing mountains. As a result, these geographical and morphological contrasts make it unique. This island is Andros.
Andros connects to the port of Rafina, 36 nautical miles and just 2 hours by a conventional ship. It is one of the largest Greek islands. An area of 380 square kilometres and a coastline of 176 km. The northernmost island of the Cyclades is, therefore, the second largest island of Cyclades.
The Greek Island of Nature and Activities
Abundant waters of lush vegetation and rare wildlife on a Greek island
The Greek Island of Nature and ActivitiesThe nature of Andros will amaze you. It is the Greek island of the Cyclades that is famous for its waters. In the winter months, it floods by a large number of rivers and streams. The waters end up in numerous waterfalls and springs. Consequently, that preserves the rich vegetation with abundant trees, so many species of birds and small animals can find shelter and food. What you experience exudes a distinct aura that does not refer you to a classic Greek island in the Cyclades.
The Greek island of rivers, springs, and waterfalls in the Cyclades
The Achla River flows from Petalo, one of the highest peaks in the Cyclades. It expands to the homonym beach and has water even in the summer. Arnipotamos expands to the bay of Lefka and the Great River from Stavropeda expands to Paraporti beach. In Andros, you will see several waterfalls. The waterfall in Pithara accessed by hiking, and in Paleopoli the waters are falling from above.
The most significant spring is Zenio. The most extensive volume of Zenio waters flows to all sides of the island. Krya Vrissi on the northern side of Petalo, the fountain of Koumoulou in Menites village, are some of the scattered throughout the island. The source of Sariza in Apoikia, with the homonymous table water, is considered curative.
Dense vegetation and rare wildlife on a Greek island
In Andros, there are trees such as plane trees, willows, poplars, oaks, pine trees, maples. Among them emerge lentisk, oleander, fig, mulberry, olive trees, reeds, merolies, laurels, brushwood. Spring wildflowers make up an incredible carpet of anemones, orchids, and bells. The perfumes of the gardens and orchards confused with thyme, oregano and create a unique atmosphere.
In Andros, many bird species find shelter and food. Owls, nightingales, partridges, woodcocks, tortoises, carders. Rare predators such as Mavropetritis, a dark hawk that is one of the most endangered species in Europe. Mavropetritis reproduces in the Cyclades in Andros and Skyros. He is fleeing to winter in Madagascar. Vegetation shelter many small animals, badgers, rabbits, hedgehogs, and hares. Also many turtles and frogs.
The Cyclades of Special Activities
The island is suitable for many activities during the more significant part of the year. It is the only Greek island, but also the single island in Europe with a certified network of hiking trails (100 kilometres). The long association with the sea makes it one of the islands in the Cyclades you can enjoy water activities such as Wind Surf, SUP, and scuba diving from experienced people and famous athletes.
The Greek island of hiking
Andros has an extensive network of hiking trails. This tracks connected the settlements, places of worship and the ports of the island. Andros still has a pervasive system of hiking trails, which is estimated to exceed 300 kilometres. The accessible hiking trail network today is about 150 km. The paths are maintained with the concern of a significant collective effort of people, with a particular love for nature and sometimes with the help of volunteers from all over the world.
The Greek Island of Culture and Authenticity
The Greek island in the Cyclades that carries a long history and travels to art and culture, it is Andros. Museums housing with world-class exhibitions, finds and collections of immense value, naval tradition and the imprint of the life of the island in every corner. Archaeological sites of particular importance such as Stropilas, the “Most Ancient City of Europe” dating back to 4,500-3,300 BC.
