Valparaiso Sotomayor square , Chile.
The Plaza Sotomayor is a plaza in Valparaíso, Chile. It is named after Rafael Sotomayor. The square is lined by buildings occupying full block-fronts of the streets that flank it.
Sotomayor Square is located in the port of Valparaíso in the V Region, on the narrow coastal plain of the bay, in front of the Prat pier. Currently constituted as a civic center of the city, it presents an unusual amplitude within it, being inserted in the main transverse axis of the area.
Its main milestone is the Public Monument to the Heroes of Iquique, erected in 1886, under which is the crypt with the remains of the martyrs of the combat fought during the Pacific War. It is the most important memorial monument in Valparaíso, congregating parades and naval ceremonies.
Valparaiso Historic Quarter Day Trip - Valparaiso, Chile
I got down to Santiago, Chile a few days in advance of the start of a trip to Antarctica so I could check out the Chilean capital. Whenever I visit a place, even for just a few days, I do like to work in at least one day trip. Santiago is somewhat close to the the ocean (70 miles), and I had two viable coastal options - beachy tourist destination Vina del Mar or the historic seaport of Valparaiso. I chose Valparaiso.
Valparaiso remains an important seaport, but in recent years it has become an educational and cultural center. Since 1990 it has also served as the headquarters of the Chilean National Congress. In 2003 Valparaiso was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in particular its historic quarter.
I took a walking tour of the city center during my short visit, and would like to explore it more if I ever make it back there.

Valparaiso Travel Guide - Exploring Chile's Cultural Capital Video Transcript:
So, hello from Valparaiso. That means paradise on the valley. We have a few days to explore the city and we're planning to do most of it on foot. Yes, and most of it is going up hills as well. And there is so much cool street art here. So we're going to be taking a few different walking tours while we're in town. Today we're doing the first one which should be an overview of the city. And it should be fun. So we're going to take you on a little guided tour of Valparaiso. Yee-haw!
To say Valparaiso is a bit hilly would be an understatement. The city is a maze of steep inclines which means the best way to get around and save your legs for sightseeing, is by riding up and down the funiculars. It might seem a bit daunting considering some of these are well over a hundred years old, but they still do the job.
And this is our friend the pup who has joined our tour. She's the official bodyguard. And she knows where the funiculars are located so she took the stairs instead. Hi, pup. You're sweet aren't you? Yes, you are. Yes, you are. Yes, you are.
If we can offer one recommendation for visiting Valparaiso, it would be to join one of the free walking tours towards the beginning of your stay. This is a great way to get some background history and to familiarize yourself with the various neighbourhoods. The local guides know where to find the best murals, so consider this a scouting mission. You can always come back with a bit more time to explore the area with your camera in hand.
Apparently, there are 42 hills in the city and we're just exploring it for the first time today. And my first impressions are so much better now that we're seeing this cool part. It is so colorful, so artsy and lots of fun to check out. Exactly.
Another thing we really enjoyed about our walking tour of Valparaiso, was the company of all the dogs. Valparaiso has a lot of strays roaming the streets, but we found the dogs to be super friendly and affectionate. We also noticed locals feeding dogs.
We're having a little food break. I think we're going to try some empanadas. And I see that they have shrimp ones on the menu. Shrimp and cheese empanadas so those should be really tasty.
The harbor tours depart from Muelle Prat as soon as they get a boat-full of passengers. During the outing you’ll go past container ships, tug boats, and navy vessels, plus you’ll also have a guide on-board to point out sights along the way.
Viña del Mar is a super quick day trip from Valparaiso. The two cities are only 8 kilometers apart and you can easily get there with the above ground metro system that runs along the beach. It’s only a 15 minute ride, and it’s quite the change in scenery. Whereas Valparaiso is colorful, artsy, and gritty, Viña del Mar is a bit more chic and modern. That being said, while we enjoyed our day trip to Viña del Mar, we were really glad we decided to stay in Valparaiso as we felt it had way more character.
So our time in Valparaiso is coming to an end. What are your final thoughts of the place? Yeah, that is a wrap from here. I loved it here. It was one of the coolest cities that I think we've visited on this entire South America trip. We have to show you the views from our balcony. Look at that. You get to see the hills, the colorful hills. Bye Valparaiso.
Our visit Valparaiso travel guide covers some of the top attractions including the best in arts, entertainment, museums, nightlife and restaurants (Cocina Chilena). We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities that you won't find in your typical tourism brochure or Santiago city guide.
This is part of our Travel in Chile series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Chilean culture, Chilean arts, Chilean foods, Chilean religion, Chilean cuisine and Chilean people.

Prince Harry visits families affected by a devastating fire
Britain's Prince Harry had breakfast on Saturday with Chilean families who lost their homes in a massive wildfire in the seaport of Valparaiso.
Harry also toured Cerro La Cruz, a hillside impoverished village destroyed in April's wildfire and went inside one of the houses that a regional non-profit organisation is building there.
More then 12 thousand people were affected by the fires in the area, which is located 120 kilometres (74 miles) northwest of the capital Santiago.
Some of those who lost their homes are currently living in temporary camps.
At least 15 people were killed and a few hundreds were injured in the fire.
An estimated 11 thousand people were left homeless and around 3 thousand homes were destroyed.
Prince Harry was visiting Chile as part of his tour of South America.

Valparaiso Travel Guide - Chile Joyful Memories
Valparaiso Travel Guide - Chile Joyful Memories
Valparaíso is a city of around 300,000 on the Pacific coast of Central Chile. Frequently referred to as simply Valpo, it is located approximately 120km west of the capital, Santiago de Chile. The city is widely known for its bohemian culture, brightly coloured houses, and beautiful seaside views.
The city's main economic activities are shipping, the naval dockyards and tourism. Valparaiso was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. Visiting Valparaíso has less to do with touring specific sites than it is about roaming the chaotic, hilly streets, and taking in the views and ambiance. There is also an active nightlife and a constantly changing variety of artistic events.
The iconic green and gray trolley-buses run on a loop from Ave Argentina in the west, to Artilleria Hill in the east. Fare is CH$270 as of March 2018. The trolley-buses run until about 10 pm, every day except Sunday. Colectivos are taxis painted in black with yellow roofs that run fixed routes, and are a very common mode of transport between (and within) Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, and other surrounding areas. Ascensores, funiculars, ply between El Plan, or the coastal strip, with the cerros, or hillside communitiies. They are for the most part old and creaky, but generally reliable.
Going to Valparaíso and not going on the ascensores (inclines) is like going to Venice and not taking a ride on a Gondola, only that the ascensores cost as little as 300 Chilean Pesos (around 55 US cents). They are also of practical use as they help many local people get to the higher parts of town, saving them from having to walk otherwise long and steep pedestrian routes.
The Mirador del Cerro Artilleria, panoramic view of the city of Vina del Mar, Reñaca, Con Con and more. It can be reached on the lift Artilleria, in operation since 1893 (near the Aduana Building). The lift costs 300 Chilean pesos. It leads to Mirador Walk May 21, (1911). Cerro Artilleria (Artillery Hill) is home to a striking panorama, the Naval Museum (500 pesos), a handful of restaurants, and souvenir shops.
During the last week in the year, Valparaíso holds an annual carnival that everyone should experience at least once in their lives. Each year the festival centers around a different country, from which performers and artists are invited to come and represent their culture and their work in theater, music, and the performance arts.
Valparaiso, to its charm, is not a city of malls and department stores. While several large grocery stores are present, most other shopping is done in smaller, non-chain stores tucked in along crowded city streets, or with street vendors; larger chain stores (and more upscale goods) are more commonly found in nearby Viña del Mar. A large shopping center, however, is found on the eastern end of Avenida Brasil.
The most traditional food in Valparaiso is the Chorrillana, a heaping mound of French fries topped with steak stripes, fried onion, and fried eggs - and also large enough to feed at least two people. You can eat this in several places, but the most famous one is the traditional restaurant J Cruz. The city´s two most attractive hills, Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepcion, have seen a great many new restaurants open in recent years, and most visitors tend to stick to these as they are a short, safe walk from hostals.
On weekends, the time to go out for a drink (Chilean people call it salir de carrete) starts no earlier than midnight, though somewhat earlier during the week. The pubs and clubs close at 5 AM on weekends, and 4 AM on weekdays. There are many hostels around the Cerro Concepcion.
A lot to see in Valparaiso such as :
Cerros Alegre and Concepción
Plaza Echaurren – Serrano Street
Cerro Bellavista: residential area & artistic hill with colorful murals
Museo a cielo abierto: 20 murals spread throughout cerro Bellavista
Ascensor & Cerro Polanco: The only verticle elevator ascensor in the city.
Cerro Cordillera
Prat Street- Old financial district known as the Wallstreet Porteño
Paseo 21 de Mayo (Cerro Artilleria)
La Matriz Church and surroundings
Ascensores (inclines)
La Sebastiana, one of three homes of poet Pablo Neruda (cerro Bellavista)
Ex Cárcel, a former jail turned cultural center and concert venue
Museo Naval y Maritimo (Naval and Maritime Museum)
Museo del Tren Más Lento del Mundo
( Valparaiso - Chile ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Valparaiso . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Valparaiso - Chile

Heroe Naval Chileno: Arturo Prat Chilean Naval Hero: Captain Prat
Heroe Naval Chileno: Arturo Prat Chilean Naval Hero Dead: Captain Prat
Chilean navy officer. He was killed shortly after boarding the Peruvian armored monitor Huáscar at the Naval Battle of Iquique after the ship under his command, the Esmeralda, was rammed by the Peruvian monitor. Prat got to the enemy's deck and advanced towards to command tower, but he was hit by a bullet. Nevertheless he did not fall and could stand on his knee, but a sailor from the artillery tower struck him dead with a shot in the forehead with a rifle.
During his career, Prat had taken part in several major naval engagements, including battles at Papudo (a coastal city north of Valparaíso) (1865), and at the Battle of Abtao (1866), at the islet of Abtao across from Chiloé Island. Following his death, his name became a rallying cry for Chilean forces, and Arturo Prat has since been considered a national hero.
Prat's name is commemorated on numerous plazas (squares), streets, buildings and other structures in Chile. His name has been commemorated by four of Chile's major warships, including a USS Brooklyn class cruiser in the 1950s, a British County class destroyer from 1983 to 2006, and most recently a Dutch Jacob van Heemskerck class frigate transferred to Chile as Capitan Prat in 2006. One of Chile's Antarctic research facilities, Arturo Prat Station, and the Chilean Naval Academy, Escuela Naval Arturo Prat are named after him. His portrait also appears on the 10,000 Chilean peso bank note.
===============================
Controlled Collapse of STS Crane - TPSV, Valparaiso, Chile
The scope of works included:
• The Controlled Collapse of a Ship to Shore Crane
O’Brien’s were approached by the TPS engineering department and were tasked to come up with a solution for the removal of crane no.1. The crane in question was to be removed to make way for newer bigger cranes to serve the biggest of modern container vessels. Due to the geographical location of TPSV, the port operates in a relatively small area meaning every square metre of space is utilised for container storage. This posed a logistical challenge to both the Demolition team and TPSV to find a solution which would take up as little room as possible to reduce the impact on port operations.
Many different options and methods were considered during the planning stages of the project. After many calculations and discussions with the port operators, O’Brien’s opted for a controlled collapse. This was chosen over the other options as it would require less of the operational area and also could be completed in a shorter space of time.
TPSV had identified an area in which the project could take place without causing major disruption to the port, however, the area had a number of obstacles to take into account these included, a neighbouring operation naval base, maintenance workshops, lighting and communication towers and REEFER container gantries. The Demolition team carried out many calculations to come up with a design of cuts which allowed the 900ton 90-metre tall crane to be controlled and collapsed within 10 metres of an existing building and 8 metres of an existing lighting tower with perfect accuracy to the delight of TPSV and the neighbouring naval base. As part of the work, O’Brien’s put in place protection to ensure no damage was caused to the quay deck during the collapse.
The O’Brien’s team carried out all aspects of this project including;
• Initial site survey & calculations
• Provision of a ground impact study
• Provision of risk analysis
• Implementation of environmental control measures
• Design of unique pre weakening operation
• Design & installation of quay deck protection
• The controlled collapse
• Planning, supervision and execution of all works
