Blue Lagoon // Monkey Island - Port Antonio, Jamaica
Blue Lagoon is located in Port Antonio and is a wildly popular travel destination for families and honeymooners.
With glistening, turquoise blue waters surrounded by lush greenery, Blue Lagoon is a vision of beauty.
The water in Blue Lagoon is a mix of fresh water and salt water, as the lagoon is open to the sea and fed by freshwater springs. If you decide to take a dip in the lagoon, you’ll notice the alternating temperatures (the warmth of the Caribbean Sea and the icy cold waters of the underground streams), which is quite an experience.
Portland
Monkey Island, also called Pellew Island, no longer has any monkeys. Monkey Island is situated offshore from the folly ruins. The stretch of water separating the Island from the mainland is very shallow, about ankle deep at low tide, so it is easy to walk across. However, watch your step if you are walking barefoot as the sea bed is dotted with sea urchins.
Monkey Island
The island gets its name from the colony of monkeys which Alfred Mitchell's explorer son–in–law Hirman Bingham bought in to Jamaica. Mitchell who hailed from New York and married a member of the Tiffany family. The Mitchells lived in grand style with a large retinue of servants and many pets including peacocks and monkeys, the latter being allowed to roam free on the island offshore now known as Monkey Island.
On the island you will find a well–shaded beach, a small walking trail, a diving platform and great views of the coast.
The island sits at one end of a coral reef, which protects the San San Bay. It is surrounded by healthy sea grass beds and wonderful swimming areas. Jamaicans and visitors alike visit the island by boat, laze on the small beach, snorkel at the nearby reef and generally enjoy the gorgeous setting.

Soooo, our next stop was ... Port Antonio! Where we stayed at a place near the Blue Lagoon called Moon San Villa. We also visited Frenchman's Cove and spent a day there at the beach!

Even though it is a quiet and beautiful haven, Port Antonio isn’t only visited for its charm. If you’ve got an eye for arts and crafts, and all the jewels Jamaica has to offer, come and explore the city. Don't book the (save) resorts. Go on the streets to enjoy jerked chicken jerked pork jerked beef jerked goat jerked tourists etc. etc. 24hours a day.... Meet the local (very nice) people in the surroundings op Port Antonio and have fun. Then make a (bamboo)boattrip on the Riogrande and enjoy the wild river.

Port Antonio is the capital of the parish of Portland, Jamaica. You can find local supermarkets, different stores, a bank and more. Ask for a cambio if you want to change money.The locals are used to tourists, but filming with our GoPro camera was not easy. We got several suspicious looks and questions. Furthermore, you will absolutely get hustled. Even when sitting quietly in the beautiful marina, enjoying the view, all kinds of people will come to you with a personal story and try to sell you something or just ask for money. We found that ok to a certain extend, if they stayed friendly. Which they did. A guy who calls himself Nature Man even climbed a tree and picked a coconut (jelly) for us. He kindly showed the way to the taxis later on. And asked for money.
