FUNICULAIRE DE NAZARÉ - PORTUGAL
Funiculaire de Nazaré - Portugal
Après avoir visité le centre de Nazaré, nous avons décidé de prendre le funiculaire pour retourner à Sitio qui est en fait le haut quartier de Nazaré.
Ce funiculaire a été conçu en 1889. A l'époque, les chariots étaient entraînés par un moteur à vapeur. Malheureusement, une rupture des câbles a causé un accident en 1963.
Le funiculaire a été fermé durant cinq ans puis ré-ouvert suite à d'importantes modifications apportées aux systèmes de transmission et de freinage.
Les frais d'embarquement sont de 1,5 euro. Une super balade à petit prix qui nous permet d'obtenir de jolies vues de la ville de Nazaré et sa superbe plage.

Étant donné que notre traversée vers l'archipel des Berlengas avait été annulée la veille pour des raisons de sécurité (la mer étant trop agitée), nous avons filé tout droit vers notre prochaine destination, le belvédère (Miradouro) de Suberco situé à Nazaré appelé également Sitio.
Un grand stationnement gratuit est disponible à proximité. Nous y avons donc garé notre voiture.
Ce matin-là, une bande de nuages recouvrait le ciel au-dessus de Nazaré. Ce fut le seul moment de notre voyage où cela s'est produit.
Par la suite, nous avons eu droit à un magnifique ciel bleu et une température bien au-dessus des normales saisonnières.
Le belvédère de Suberco est situé tout au haut d'une falaise qui surplombe la ville de Nazaré ainsi que sa superbe plage en forme de croissant, offrant ainsi aux visiteurs un magnifique panorama de ces lieux.
Nazaré est reconnu mondialement pour ses énormes vagues géantes et parfaites pour la pratique du surf. Elle est d'ailleurs fréquentée par les meilleurs surfeurs du monde entier.
D'ailleurs, c'est ici qu'un surfeur hawaïen a battu un record mondial en 2011 en affrontant la plus grande vague du monde sur fond de sable d'une hauteur d'environ 30 mètres.
Malheureusement, lors de notre passage à la fin mai, ce n'était pas le moment propice pour observer ce phénomène.
Nous sommes allés faire un petit tour en direction du fort de Nazaré situé tout au bas de ce belvédère. Une route asphaltée y mène. L'intérieur du fort peut être visité, mais nous ne l'avons pas fait.
L'emplacement de ce fort cependant nous permet d'avoir une superbe vue des plages situées de chaque côté du promontoire.
Nous nous sommes rendus ensuite à la grande place de Sitio située à proximité du belvédère. On y retrouve plusieurs boutiques, cafés et restaurants ainsi que plusieurs kiosques tenus par des dames portant le costume traditionnel.
Nous avons visité l'intérieur du sanctuaire de Notre-Dame de Nazaré (Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré) qui est richement décoré.
Par la suite, nous avons pris la promenade qui comprend plusieurs marches pour descendre vers les quartier de Nazaré situés en bordure de la plage.
Cela nous a permis d'obtenir d'autres jolis points de vue de la ville ainsi que de la plage.
Nous avons marché sur la promenade qui longe la plage et nous nous sommes même rendus au bord de l'océan pour vérifier la température de l'eau. Elle était très froide!
Après avoir visité deux belles petites chapelles situées dans le quartier, nous avons fait un arrêt dans un tout petit restaurant situé juste en face de la zone d'embarquement pour le funiculaire. Il était tenu par une vieille dame qui était vraiment très gentille.
Malgré le fait qu'elle ne parlait que le portugais, nous avons pu aisément nous faire comprendre. Nous avons commandé un sandwich jambon-fromage ainsi que des crevettes. Le tout était vraiment succulent.
Notre repas terminé, nous avons embarqué dans le funiculaire pour nous rendre à Sitio, le haut quartier de Nazaré où nous avions stationné notre voiture.
Cette promenade en funiculaire fera l'objet d'une prochaine vidéo.

A Nazaré é uma vila portuguesa no distrito de Leiria, região Centro e subregião do Oeste, com cerca de 10 100 habitantes.
A stunning beach, typical fishermen houses and steep cliffs over a bright blue sea have made this fishing town become a popular holiday resort, mainly due to its traditional character.
According to legend, the city derives its name from a statue of the Virgin Mary brought here by a monk in the 4th century from Nazareth, Palestine.
It has become a popular tourist attraction, advertising itself as a picturesque seaside village. Located on the Estramaduran coast of the Atlantic, it has long sandy beaches (considered by some to be among the best beaches of Portugal) that are crowded with tourists in the summer. The city used to be known for its traditional costumes worn by the fishermen. Their wives were dressed in black, wearing the traditional headscarf and embroidered aprons over seven flannel skirts in different colours. These dresses can still occasionally be seen.
The city consists of three sections : A Praia (along the beach), O Sítio (the old town, on a hilltop) and Pederneira (on another hilltop). The A Praia and O Sítio areas are linked by the Nazaré Funicular, a funicular railway.
The original settlement was in Sítio on the rock face 110 m above the beach. It was the inhabitants' safe base against raids by Algerian, French, English and Dutch pirates that lasted even till the beginning of the 19th century. The Church of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré was built to commemorate a legendary miraculous intervention by the Virgin in saving the life of a 12th century knight.
The unusual and ancient design of the fishing boats, with the Phoenician signs on their soaring pointed bow, refers to the Phoenician descent of the inhabitants of Nazaré. These fishing boats are no longer hauled in on the beaches by oxen, but lay anchor now in the new harbour, just south of Nazaré.
The municipal holiday is September 8 with a Romaria da Senhora da Nazaré a religious festival with processions, bullfights and folk dancing.

The Nazaré beach, with a mild climate and natural beauty, has the oldest traditions of Portugal linked to the fishing arts.
The long, crescent-shaped beach, which is also the seafront of the city, is known for its grandeur and brightly colored awnings that decorate the white sand beach in contrast to the blue of the water.
This is the beach of Portugal where the traditions of fishing are more colorful and it is not uncommon to cross with the fishmongers who still wear the seven skirts, as tradition says. On a late Saturday afternoon in the summer months, it is essential to sit on the wall watching the interesting spectacle of Arte Xávega, where fish nets arrive from the sea and the women shout their trading sessions. If we do not exactly understand the words, it's nothing to worry about. These are codes that often only they know.
Facing the sea, on the right side, we see an impressive promontory. It is the Site, where we have one of the most known panoramic views of the Portuguese coast. There are 318 meters of rock falling steeply to the sea, which is reached on foot, for the most courageous, or climbing the elevator. At the top, we find the little Hermitage of Memory, where we can tell the legend of the miracle that Our Lady made preventing the horse of a nobleman, D. Fuas Roupinho, from launching on the cliff. True or not, in the Mirador de Suberco we can see the sign left on the rock by the horseshoe on this foggy morning of 1182. In the Sítio, we can still visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré and not far away, the Dr. Joaquim Manso Museum To learn more about the Nazarene traditions.
From the Sítio and with time for a walk, crossing Pedralva Park, you come to Pederneira, a natural lookout point with a must see on the coast of Nazaré.
Nowadays, the great attraction of this city is the waves and the surf, thanks to the Canção da Nazaré, a submarine geomorphological phenomenon that allows the formation of giant and perfect waves. It is the largest submerged gorge in Europe, with about 170 kilometers along the coast, which is 5000 meters deep.
Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara gave him world-wide visibility when in 2011 he made the world's largest sand-bottom wave, about 30 meters long, at Praia do Norte, winning the Billabong XXL Global BigWave Awards and setting a record Of the Guinness Book. Similarly, surfers from all over the world visit Nazareth every year to venture into the sea. On the beach, sunbathing is also appreciated and an excellent audience to appreciate the feats of these young people.
To get to know Nazaré you do not need a relaxed stroll through the narrow streets, perpendicular to the beach, and a break in one of the restaurants to enjoy a plate of fresh seafood, grilled fish or an appetizing stew. And at dusk, nothing like enjoying the setting sun on any terrace overlooking the sea, as the lights come on and dusk.

Nazare, Portugal is a town and a municipality in subregion Oeste and Leiria District, in Portugal. It is one of the most popular seaside resorts in the Silver Coast/Costa de Prata, Portugal. The town consists of three neighbourhoods: Praia (along the beach), Sítio (an old village, on top of a cliff) and Pederneira (another old village, on a hilltop). Praia and Sítio are linked by the Nazaré Funicular, a funicular railway.The earliest settlements were in Pederneira and in Sítio, above the beach. According to the Legend of Nazaré, the town derives its name from a small wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, a Black Madonna, brought by a monk in the 4th century from Nazareth, Holy Land, to a monastery near the city of Mérida, Spain. The statue was brought to its current place in 711 by another monk, Romano, accompanied by Roderic, the last Visigoth king of today's Portugal. After their arrival at the seaside they decided to become hermits. The monk lived and died in a small natural grotto, on top of a cliff above the sea. After his death and according to the monk's wishes, the king buried him in the grotto. Roderic left the statue of the Black Madonna in the grotto on an altar. Nazaré has become a popular tourist attraction, advertising itself internationally as a picturesque seaside village. Located on the Atlantic coast, it has long sandy beaches (considered by some to be among the best beaches in Portugal), with lots of tourists in the summer.
