Nazare is one of the finest beach resorts in Portugal, and is an outstanding destination for a holiday. The town is situated on a wide bay of golden sands and stands in the shadow of the towering Sítio headland. Historically, this headland provided shelter for the fishing fleet and the boats were moored high up on the sands, safe from the ferocity of the ocean. Nazaré has a single massive beach, the Praia da Nazaré, which extends for 1.5km from the Sítio headland in the north to the fishing harbour in the south. The beach has soft golden sands and is of a very high standard, but the sea waters are shockingly cold, reaching only 18C in the summer. The picturesque village of Nazaré got its name from a statue of the Virgin Mary brought to town from Nazareth by a monk in the 4th century. Today it is Portugal's most famous fishing village, having always drawn visitors to its beach and genuinely colorful life.The Nazare Canyon causes very high breaking waves. This makes Nazare a hotspot for big wave surfing.Nazaré has a single massive beach, the Praia da Nazaré, which extends for 1.5km from the Sítio headland in the north to the fishing harbour in the south. Gigantes de Nazaré 2019 - First tow-in event of the winter
Some shots from a winterstay in Nazaré, Portugal. Nazaré is a little coastal town on the Portugese Costa da Prata. At the foot of the 'forte de san miguel', there is a 5km deep and 230km long canyon in the continental shelf which generates enormous waves hitting the northern beach, praia do norte,.when the meteoric circumstances are right.Ever since Garreth McNamara, Andrew Cotton and Carlos Burle came to Nazaré in 2008 to surf these waves, the town has been put on the map of the worldwide surfing community. Statistically january is the month with the biggest swells. Last years I crossed paths with surfers like Justine DuPont, Grant Twiggy Baker, Pierre Rollet and Owen Schultz. This year a Brazilian delegation with Pedro Scooby, Maya Gabeira and Lucas Chumba came to surf this winter's first tow-in event 'Gigantes de Nazaré'.
I spent most of the week in and around the sitio and praia do Norte, focused on the incoming swells and doing windtests with the incredible DJI Mavic Drone. One day, I walked down the long stairway from the towering sitio to the lower southern part of town, where I was staying at the hospitable Hotel Oceano. I noticed some people dressed in running gear and some kind of charity running competition in the making. I live for these kinds of occasions. The adrenaline kicks in, I quickly find out if and where I can sign up for this. I rush to my hotel, drop off my gear and make it just in time to take part in the Revolvio contra relogio. Apparently not a long distance run, but rather an excrutiating time trial run with a team of circa 5 people (in total there were some 50 participants) from the lowest part to the highest part of Nazaré, including the infamous sitio staircase. Though it was harder than I thought and I reached the top on my last breath, I had an absolutely wonderful time during the run and the sunny after-party with the kind people of Nazaré. The state of Goa, in India, is famous for its beaches and places of worship, and tourism is its primary industry. Tourism is generally focused on the coastal areas of Goa, with decreased tourist activity inland. Foreign tourists, mostly from Europe, arrive in Goa in winter whilst the summer and monsoon seasons see a large number of Indian tourists. Goa handled 2.29% of all foreign tourist arrivals in the country in 2011.
1. Can you guess how many bars Goa has?
This is one of those facts about Goa you didn’t know. For a small state, Goa has an astounding number of bars. In total, there are about 7000 bars and almost all of them are licensed to serve alcohol. But what would be the estimate if you add the number of unlicensed bars to the tally? It would truly be an astounding number! Now would that make Goa the liquor capital of India? Not really. Being an international tourist destination, this is land of high spirits and free-wheeling fantasies. So bars are only enablers of the footloose (not recluse) collective consciousness of this region.
2. The non-decomposing body St. Francis Xavier
In the year 1542, the Portuguese ruled Goa. It was during this time that St. Francis Xavier began his work of spreading the gospel. He was instrumental in helping many people turn to his faith and in 1552;
The saint continued on his journey and finally landed at Macau. He died in Macau and his body was brought to Goa in 1553. Enshrined in a glass casing, his non-decomposed body is in the world-famous Basilica of Bom Jesus church.
3. The forest density cover of Goa is over 30%
For those who have not visited Goa, they think this region is only about beaches. But this state has a forest cover in excess of 30%. The forests teem with exotic wildlife and birdlife. An abounding ecosystem characteristic of the Western Ghats can be found here. The equatorial forest cover gives rises to thousands of plant species.
4. Asia’s only Naval Aviation Museum is at Goa
Goa’s Naval Aviation Museum is one of a kind and Asia’s first and only one. There are only about six other such museums in the world. The museum displays India’s naval aviation history. For instance, the giant reconnaissance ship called Lockheed Super Constellation is displayed. India’s first naval aircraft can be seen at the museum. Contemporary aircraft, jet trainers, helicopters, and famous aircraft that were used at wars are displayed. A section of the building houses naval memorabilia.
5. The first medical school was setup in the state
Being a melting pot of different cultures and nationalities, Goa has a distinct way of life. The Goa Medical College was India’s first medical school setup to educate prospective doctors and also to impart treatments. This is definitely one of the facts about Goa you didn't know. It was built in the 18th century when the state was still under Portuguese rule. One of Asia’s oldest medical colleges, the library here is one of the oldest as well, with books dating back to the 18th century.
6. Take a two-wheeler taxi – only in Goa!
This is the only place in India where you can ask a biker a lift and actually pay him without worrying about riding with a stranger! Goa is full of motorcycle taxis and riders take you pillion to your desired destination for a charge. It is known to be a cost-effective form of transport and is definitely fuel-effective for the Goan economy too. Referred to as Pilot,
7. The first English medium school was in this state
Currently, there are tens and thousands of English medium schools. But given that Goa’s tryst with the English language is centuries old, it was not a surprise that the first English medium school was in this state. The pluralistic and egalitarian essence of this state is vivid. Amidst this diversity, people live in harmony and celebration.
