Cetatea Neamțului - The Neamt Fortress (Targu Neamt, Romania)
Enable English subtitle ! - Activați subtitrarea în românește !
The Neamt Fortress is located on the Pleşu Ridge, near Targu Neamt town (Neamt County). The possible existence of an ancient fortification built by the Teutonic Knights is an interesting speculation supported by some historians, still unproven by evidence. The core of the Neamt Fortress dating from the reign Peter I Musat, sec. XIV. That fort has the shape of a quadrangle,
and reinforced corners with towers. In sec. XV, during the reign of Stephen the Great, the fort was heavily fortified. Old walls were raised and were built exterior walls, reinforced with four bastions. Also, was built an access bridge on 11 pillars and was deepened the groove beneath it. The bridge ends with a tip-up portion, driven by a pulley system. Then follow two traps with hatches, known as the rat traps.
Last rehabilitation of the Neamt Fortress was in 2007-2009, benefiting on European funding. Walls were raised and were rebuilt
several halls and rooms. Most rooms have been equipped with exhibits and explanatory material. Also, some rooms were populated with mannequins that restore medieval atmosphere.
There are a number of 21 showrooms, most of them being captured video: 1 - NW tower (visitation plan, the natural site, doorways and archaeological findings); 2 - Advice and judgment hall (key moments in the history of the citadel and exhibits); 3 - Hall pass (watchman); 4 - Bedroom (royal council); 5 - The secret room (fireplace and boyards); 6 - Hall of weapons (soldiers from the ”small army” and weapons); 7 - The Black Dungeon; 8 - The Guards Room (photo-documentary exhibition); 9 - The room of the custodian; 10 - The Chapel St. Nicholas ; 11 - Chamber of passage; 12 - NE Tower (with the 1691 moment, Sobieski and the guards); 13 - Ladies rooms (characters); 14-16 - Lapidarium (the medieval fortress of Moldova); 17 - The food warehouse; 18 - The kitchen; 19 - The mint; 20 - The chamber of chief magistrate; 21 - The prison (inmates)
The Neamt Fortress. Historic Romania (cetatea Neamt)
The Neamt Fortress was built during the reign of Petru 1 Musat (1375-1391), within the circumstances of Moldavia's medieval state consolidation. Its first recording dates back to 1395, when the Hungary King, Sigismund of Luxemburg, shortly after his defeat by the armies of Stefan Musat at Hindau, issued a document of the Cancellery, Ante Castrum Nempch.
The better days of the fortress located on Culmea Plesului are those from the reign of Stefan Cel Mare (1457-1504), the outstanding organizar and military commander who, by very well understanding the part played by the fortifications to the upgrade of his country's defensive capacities, reinforced the fortress he inherited and also built new ones, in order to créate a powerful defensive system for Moldavia.
The Works carried out here during his reign consisted in upraising the old walls, building the four bastions of exterior court and the arch shaped Access bridge sustained upon eleven Stone pillars, thus reinforced, in 1476 the fortress wihtstood the siege of Mohamed the second, after the battle from valea Alba-Razboieni.
As the turkish domination grew rougher and the progress in the battle techniques began to increase, starting with the second half of the 16th century the role of the moldavian fortress will diminish . After the partial destruction of some interior constructions during the reign of Alexandru Lapusneanu 1564 and the renovations ordered by Ieremia Movila in 1600, th Neamt Fortress will open its gates in front of the armies of one who achieved the Romanian's first political unión: Mihai Viteazul.
Turned into monastery by Vasile Lupu (1646) and then partially destroyed by Dumitrascu Cantacuzino in 1675, the Neamt Fortress will bear the forcé to write one more heroic page in 1691, resisting for a few days to the siege of Polish Army lead by King Ian Sobietsky, defended by a small group of soldiers. After its destruction ordered by Mihai Racovitsa in 1717, the Neamt Fortress will loose its military importance.

Neamt Citadel Romania
Neamț Citadel (Romanian: Cetatea Neamț or Cetatea Neamțului) is a medieval fortress located in north-eastern part of Romania, near Târgu Neamț, Neamț County. It was built in 14th century Moldavia during Petru I of Moldavia's reign and expanded in the 15th century. The citadel played a key role in Stephen III of Moldavia's defense system, along with Suceava, Hotin, Soroca, Orhei, Tighina, Chilia and Cetatea Albǎ.
Lack of reliable information on the origins of Neamţ Fortress had resulted in several hypotheses whose reliability was often questioned. A number of historians and philologists, as A.D. Xenopol, B.P. Hasdeu, D. Onciul consider that - according to the papal bull of 1232 - the Teutonic Knights of Bârsa had built between 1211-1225 on the eastern slope of the Carpathians a castrum muntissimum which was later identified as the citadel. The Germanic hypothesis was acquired by many of Romanian historians.
Mănăstirea Secu ( Secu Monastery ) Neamt County, Romania, august 2017
Secu Monastery in Neamt County is 22 km from Targu Neamt and 4 km from Targu Neamt - Pipirig. Set in the vicinity of Secu Parc and at the foot of Mount Vasan, this monastic settlement appears to our eyes in the form of a medieval fortress, built with thick walls, defense towers and towers that rise like huge spears.
Secu Monastery is one of the old Orthodox monasteries in Neamt County. Located between the localities of Vanatori and Pipirig, the monastery was built in 1602 by the great Nestor Ureche, the father of the great chronicler Grigore Ureche, on the site of a small hermit, called the Zosima Hermitage, founded in 1564.
The Secu Monastery is a monastic hearth of intense spiritual life, whose age is almost five hundred years old. Around 1500, on the Feudal field of Neamt Fortress, on the valley of Secu River, a group of hermits will be established, who will then establish in 1530 under the leadership of the hieroschimonah Zosima, a monk from Neamt Monastery, the hermitage with the same name, The Zosima Hermitage .
Cetatea Neamtului - The Neamt Fortress ( Targu Neamt, Romania )

Mănăstirea Neamț (Monastery), Neamt County, Romania, august 2017
The monastery is documented in 1407, but the roots in time of the monastic activity stretch back to the 12th century. The building of the monastery is attributed to Prince Peter I Muşat (1375-1391), who built the first stone church, now missing, but on the site of the monastery, there was an older wooden church, called the White Church, built by monks with a century before.
Within the monastery there are two churches, two chapels, a bell tower with 11 bells, the Veniamin Costache Theological Seminary, as well as a museum with a collection of church art and the printing hall. Specific is the circular Aghiazmatarul in front of the monastery, where water is sanctified at the feast. In the church there is an icon of the Virgin Mary painted in 665 in Israel, miraculous.
The settlement has the largest and oldest monastery library (18000 volumes) and has made a special contribution to the development of the medieval Romanian culture and art. Stefan Voievod (uncle of Stephen the Great) is buried in the tomb room, and in the pronaos there are the relics of the holy unknown discovered in 1986, by removing the asphalt from the alley.
The church founded by Stephen the Great is the main historical and architectural monument of Moldavian monastery, with a special elegance and beauty. The dimensions and monumentality of the ensemble have been enhanced by the introduction into construction of new elements: the porch, situated in front of the entrance and the tomb room, or the grave, located between the pronaos and the nave. The rectangle-shaped protuberance is vaulted with two spherical caps. The nave, also rectangular, of large size, has two lateral, semicircular inner and pentagonal outer apses, the base being formed by four oblique arcs supported on four other large arches.

Manastirea Neamt - Scurt Istoric, Neamt, Romania
Manastirea Neamt - Scurt Istoric, Neamt, Romania

Hiking the Carpathians in Romania: Ceahlău Massif in Neamt County
Easily the highlight of our time in Romania was having the privilege of hiking up the Carpathians (Ceahlău Massif Mountain) in Neamt County. Unfortunately, due to a persistent neck injury I was forced to linger behind while Audrey joined the rest of the blogging crew to ascend up the mountain. This challenging (yet rewarding) hike is well documented by Audrey as she huffs out of breath frequently during her speaking clips. Fortunately for all of us she takes ample time to capture all of the rugged beauty this mountain range has to offer.

Hiking up Ceahlău Massif in Neamt County, Romania Travel Video Transcript:
So hello from Romania. I'm currently in Neamt County and we're doing something a little bit different today because there is no Sam around. No, so we had signed up to do this hike and climb Ceahlău mountain in Ceahlău National Park but unfortunately Sam has hurt his neck so he had to stay back in the hotel and just get some rest. So today it is just you and me. And we are going hiking. And I've already been hiking for a few hours. And I've lost my group actually. I think I was going maybe a little bit too fast and everyone else has fallen behind. So I've been walking on my own for a few hours. I think I'm still on the right path. But yeah, it should be an interesting hike and hopefully we'll get some nice views soon.
We are just forty-five minutes away from reaching the cabin on top of the mountain. Whew, let's keep going.
Hey puppies. Puppies.
Are you cute? Wanna say hello?
Alright, so it took a bit longer than I was expecting but I finally made it to the top of the mountain and over in the background you can see the cabin. Well, it is more of a nice little guesthouse where we're spending the night. And now let me show you the views because this place is spectacular.
Okay, so I'm still a little bit tired from this morning's hike but it is time for sunset and apparently you get some really good views from a peak that is about forty five minutes away. So I'm hiking once again. Hopefully I'll have wonderful sunset views to share once I get to the top.
Well good morning, it is now day two and we have officially finished our hike. We just finished coming down the mountain and that took about two and a half or three hours I would say and I'm going to show you where we came from. You can see it over there. It is maybe a little too bright. But anyways I'm walking down to the local bar now because they are expecting us with welcome drinks.
And off in the distance comes the husband. He looks like he's recovered from his strained neck. Walking once again. Hey. Hey. How was the hike? It was good. Me with my gimpy back I couldn't join. It's too bad. Wonk. Wonk. Wonk. Did you enjoy the Jacuzzi? Yeah, and we actually did a little hiking nearby town too. So nothing like what you guys did though. We failed.
