The Necropolis of Al Bagawat, Egypt Part I
The fourth to sixth century necropolis of Al Bagawat was the principal burial ground of Kharga Oasis. Throughout the centuries, people not only buried their dead here but the cemetery was also a stopping point for caravans and those on their way to Mecca who left vast amounts of graffiti.
We visited the Chapel of Peace first, followed by a church that was also used by villagers as a meeting place to discuss events relating to the community, and a holding pen (or cell) for trouble-makers!

The Necropolis of Al Bagawat, Egypt Part II
I really hate to use the overused word amazing but that's what the second chapel, Chapel of Exodus at Al Bagawat was.
More Tombs with graffiti etched into the walls by pilgrims on camels from Libya, on their way to Mecca; Greek, Arabic, anyone who came through, for whatever reason, put a little message on the walls during their journey. Whether it was Ahmed, turn right at the next oasis or Kilroy was here - messages covered the walls.
The Chapel of Exodus had drawings all around the domed ceiling; Moses; Noah; Jonah and the Whale; Coptic crosses; and even Ankhs. What a place!

Views of Hibis temple at Kharga Oasis, Western Desert, Egypt
Deprived from tourists but immensely impressive , Hibis temple (made of limestone) is the largest cult-shrine in any of the western desert oases, Construction started during the reign of XXVI Dynasty Ruler Psammetichus II and completed by the Persian Emperor Darius I
( 521-486 BC) . The temple was dedicated to Amun-Hibis (the local version of the God , who ,sometimes getting solar powers becomes Amun-Re). In antiquity the capital of the oasis was called Hebet (meaning the Plough) and the word was corrupted to Hibis.

Kharga Hotel and Oasis Egypt
One night at the beautiful Solymar Kharga Hotel, completely empty except for eight people, before heading out of the Western Desert (escorted by local police for safety reasons), back to Luxor and from there, a plane to Cairo.
A stop to buy boxes of Kharga's renowned dates. According to our guide, Luxor doesn't have good dates and his friends put in requests for boxes of dates. Nearing the outskirts of Luxor, more stops for both the guide and driver to stock up on produce, fresh from the fields. Those tomatoes certainly looked luscious!

Time to separate with our guards at Kharga Oasis
during our visit at Kharga and Dakhla oases on December 2016, the police authorities of the area considered our group a soft easy terrorist target and offered us armed protection for our journey. These are the last minutes before we separate with our guards
